I believe most if not all of the games for launch will be released before the system. Don't know why though.

That happens all the time. From PS1, up to the DS, games for new systems are often on shelves the week before the system launches.

For a portable game that is more or less a giant port... on a system with a craptasticular Digital Pad!

I was in a Target yesterday that had 8 titles in stock but not out of the shipping cases yet. Tony Hawk, Spider-Man & Need for Speed were three of them. EB's web site shows nine titles currently in stock and shipping. This is par for the course going back to the Playstation launch, which is the first one I can remember that games were in stores a week before systems.

Actually, in most of the reviews ive rea the DPad wasn't really a problem if you set the game to easy controls.

yea i dont understand why they release the games early, my only guess is that it must be some sort of marketing strategy on their part? my store has wipeout and need for speed for sale right now and im still kind of confused why.

Publishers get a few extra sales from people who think it's cool to get a game before the system's out (I bought THPS for GBA a week early under that exact mentality when I never would've otherwise), and retailers know Activision can't hurt them for breaking the street date quite like Sony can.

Well, I didn't just think it was "cool". I was planning on picking up the game on thursday anyway. :)

Actually, it's done for logistic reasons. The idea behind a launch title if to have it in stores the day the system goes on sale. The solution is to get it to manufacturing earlier then it has to be in case of duplication/shipping problems. Once they're packaged, the manufacturer doesn't need them clogging up their space so they ship. Nothing sinister about it and I can assure you Actision, EA et all don't "ship early" to help a handful of souls look "cool". In the music and movie biz, most major releases are in stores but not shevled up to two weeks before street date for the same reasons.

I'm all about getting one of these now. My friend got one in Chinatown in NY a few days ago and it's pretty darn sexy, the control nub for driving games takes a little getting used to though.

I didn't say they do it to help a handful of souls look "cool", they do it to profit off a handful of souls that think it is "cool". I should add that, in my case, I already had a promo GBA from Nintendo and was itchin' for something to play (and have a review of at launch) on it...which no doubt helped convince me to cave.

You don't think there are PSPs in stores now? Just because they manufacture and ship the games arrive ahead of time doesn't mean they have to be sold, but software manufacturers don't care as much as hardware manufacturers do about a hard street date and don't have nearly as much power to stop it anyway.

And I was saying that no software publisher ships games before the hardware street date in hopes to sell an extra handful of copies. All they care about is the game being there the day hardware goes on sale. If their game shows up the day after launch it might as well not ship until four weeks later.

Most national retailers started receiving them last week. And unlike the movie industry, there really are no street date violations in the game business other then merchandise delays. Street dates are observed more out of respect then anything else. Think about it, if Target decides to sell the hardware early what is Sony going to do? Other then cut and/or delay orders on a zero profit margin item, they're not going to drop Target as a retailer. This doesn't become an issue with independant stores since all second and third tier distributors don't see any hardware until 1-2 days before street date.
