I picked it up yesterday. All I can say is, what were all those reveiwers smoking? This is an awesome collection!!! Fantasy Zone is easily worth the $20 by itself! Definitely a must-buy.

Virtua Racing: Any VR fan will LOVE this version. To me, it is the best game on the disc. Far from just a port of the model 1 game (which would still ROCK!), this version has better color and shading, more tracks and runs at a noticeably smooth and satisfying 60fps. And the gameplay feels just right! It's been too long since I played the original but I have played the Genny, 32x (best until now) and Saturn (crappiest) versions so many times. With this version, there is no longer any need to play the Saturn or Genesis versions. The 32x, even at its sub-30fps frame rate, still is a lot of fun and has tracks that are different from these ones.

VR's Gran Prix mode is a real treat because you get 3 extra tracks and can unlock cars like the Prototype and Drift Coup. I laughed at the first unlockable car, "F1 with 70's style acceleration", which means you rocket from 0 to 160 in a few car lengths! But the car isn't quite as fast overall and I haven't placed first on the 6 track 4-laps each) Gran prix with this car yet.

The gran prix shows a couple new courses, which you can also play in free mode. The city level seems VERY close to the 32X VR Deluxe city one, but it looks totally different due to the full polygonal city and roadside is much more "filled in" and complex. There is a new Island and a Canyon track too (different from the 32x desert/canyon one).

What I really like about Virtua Racing is it has harsh penalties for mistakes. If you graze an opponent, you both wipe out, causing nearby opponents to pass you up. This makes the game very challenging and a white-kunckle experience when it comes down to the final lap and you are trying to pass the last 2 cars around curves ... you must be very careful!

Difficulty isn't too hard playing on normal, for me. I breezed through the first Gran Prix race & got 1st place easily. But with the 2nd car, I came only came in 1st place one time. Beat it again with the prototype though. Bump up the music 1 notch to hear it better, play around with those 4 crazy camera angles, enjoy this game!

To this day, I have never seen a racing game with 4 camera views that are so unique from one another. The "high" view is indeed quite high! Half the fun is changing the camera view all the time!

...that pretty much nails the reason why you need this game. Pick it up for the first solid port of Virtua Racing - OutRun, Space Harrier, Fantasy Zone, etc. are just really nice bonuses. You have to think "would I pay $20 for one of these games?" Answer is probably yes, but you're getting 9 additional titles as well.

The only gripe I have with the V.R. port is that the in-car view is different from how it was in the arcade. In the arcade version the V.R. driver's hands and arms moved a lot more, in the Sega Classics Collection version (Virtua Racing -Flat Out- in Japan) the driver's hands barely move when steering the car. Just a tiny visual gripe I have, really just because of my fondness of the original. There are also some VERY small audio errors (cue lags) but you'll only notice them if you pump $20 into a Virtua Racing machine every time you come across one.

Thankfully ALL the audio from the course select screen is there in arcade mode, and will bring a smile to the face of anyone who remembers the first time they sat down to play this glimpse of the future. The CG grid girls at the Acropolis are there just like in the arcade as well as is the CG pit crew start at Big Forest. There is also a lot of added reflection although thankfully the flat polygons have been left untextured. Not sure if the breaking tail light was in the arcade (since I usually play in the in-car view) but it's a nice touch here. It's still cool to see (and hear) the sparks toss off from beneath the car in the other views as well as the blades of grass shower off from beneath the wheels if you get off circuit.

Lastly something everyone seems to be forgetting - GT Force feedback wheel support!! Although it's not documented in the booklet (and dissapointingly there's no adjustment mode) the Japanese release had GT Force wheel support and it's been carried over in the US release. However the support, while decent, isn't as impressive as it could be. While the wheel will autocenter upon starting the game there is next to no force feedback - which sucks compared to how the wheel in the arcade could tare your arms off if it was turned up high enough. Also pausing the game is hit or miss when using the wheel as the controller / wheel interrogation routines seem to be total junk. I also had my save file corrupted while using the GT Force wheel so I'd recommend removing your memory card if you're going to play with the wheel - don't want those OutRun times or unlocked V.R. cars to be lost.

Also... does anyone know if PS2's can be networked with this game? Or if the "Awaiting your entry" sequence / screen from the arcade game is in the PS2 port. I mean, it's shown on the Japanese page for Virtua Racing Flat Out...

You ain't kidding.

That's why I NEVER trust retro reviews in the hands of those in the current-gen game business. They usually miss the point entirely. I know the folks here can be counted on for fair reviews of this kind of title.

I'm glad to see so many people picked it up. You can't afford not to!

Let me just add my .02 cents to this also.

I've only played Outrun and Golden Axe so far, and the cash was money well spent. I played almost all the way through GA and finished a couple of races in Outrun. Can't wait to get to the other games.

Someone else said it best: "Any one of these games is worth $20. The rest are bonus."

Ignore the lame reviewers and pick this nugget of gaming goodness up pronto.

Oh man, I picked this game up a few days ago! So much fun, I don't know where to begin!

Probably my favorite of the bunch is Out Run, followed by Alien Syndrome and Space Harrier!

Talk about a trip down memory lane!

Wouldn't it be cool if SEGA produced an updated Streets of Rage/Bare Knuckle series....could release it like the Phantasy Star Collection that's due out. Hmmm.... 8-)

I only wish that the After Burner II remake could have made it onto Sega Classics Collection...

Oh well, it's still pure gaming gold and we're damn lucky that the titles on the disc made it over to the US - being on a single compilation is even better.

My expectations were pretty low before hand but overall I love this collection, especially Fantasy Zone.

It has also made me realize that Tant-R is like a slower paced predecessor to Wario Ware. I had played the Puzzle & Action series a long time ago on MAME but I had never put much time into them.

Eh, I didn't even notice any reviews from current gen folks actually, just disappointment from others. They might be wrong anyway of course. Some people would just rather play versions they already have, though $20 is a good price for this sort of thing obviously.

I can only play this compilation at work (game company) because I don't own a PS2, but I might just get a system for this collection alone!

I haven't heard any disappointment or bad reviews OTHER than current-gen magazines or websites. Retrogamers seem to be pretty much onboard that this is a great compilation.

Hmm...Does anyone know what the difference is between the "USA" and "Japan" versions of fantasy zone that are selectable on the options screen? The only difference I've noticed is that the title of the background song is displayed in the USA version and not japan's. Are there any other differences?

OutRun also has this option but I haven't messed around with it, maybe it does something with the stage order? :/

Looked in the instruction booklet (durr) in OutRun there are some differences in the course as well as the stage contents and in Fantasy Zone it uses different background music in some stages.

Just found out, $14.99 this week at Circuit City

...and that was the straw that broke this camel's will. LOL

Now, what was I supposed to not like about this comp? Sure, I wish the original versions had been included, but the remixes are pretty neat (ok, Golden Axe looks like cheese city, but the rest are cool.) In fact, my only beef (other than I wish all the Sega Ages release could be on here :D) is that there is no standard for saving. Some games auto save, some games allow auto save as an option and the rest you have to save maunally. That's a bit annoying, but nothing I can't deal with.

So yeah. I was a bit too hasty before. This disc rocks. That is all.

None of these games are the originals. Just to make sure that you're sure.

I'd be all over this if it was direct arcade ports. But alas...

It may have been offhand comments by someone, or it may have been my imagination. I can't remember who it was so nevermind. All I was saying was that I haven't read anything one way or the other in current gen stuff about these remakes. I don't read much of that crap to begin with.

Actually, it wasn't so much the quality of the remakes that concerned me. It was the thought that no one would pick them up because of the likely mainstream reaction. Since then I've liquidated most of my Sony hardware/software collection for pretty much unrelated reasons.

If I had the system $20 is a great price. As much as I despise Sony, I will probably pick up some stuff like this as soon as I can find a PS2 dirt (and I really mean dirt....) cheap. I don't think it will be too long for that to happen anyhow.

I'm really skeptical of remakes to begin with I suppose.

Sonic Mega Collection doesn't include Sonic CD.
I maintain that this is because Yuji Naka, in his infinite ego, doesn't want a Sonic game he wasn't involved in getting a re-release.

He also didn't want to lend the Nights engine to the Sonic Xtreme team, effectively killing that game.

man...Naka is a real jerk.

SSSSSSSSSSSSSSoooo...

anyone know if (and how?) there is a reverse or mirror mode in VR?

I can't beat arcade acropolis on hard yet (I keep running out of time), but that would be about the only thing I haven't done yet.

I hope there is a mirror mode code! But I am assuming there is NOT one .. can any of you code hounds help? KARLSON and PEETERS!

I purchased this game the other day. I think it's great! Like many others, I read the(often putrid) reviews for this game before I bought it. Hey, it's only $20, what they heck?

My expectations were low, but I'm actually enjoying this compilation a lot. Virtua Racing is as good, if not better than I remember it. Bonanza Bros., Space Harrier, and Columns play just as well as they ever did. I'd never played Tant R prior to this collection, so I can't comment on that one, but it was pretty fun. Alien Syndrome is GREAT. Sure, it's nothing like the original, but this is a very addictive remake. My favorite game on the compilation. Golden Axe is the one most people are complaining about. I didn't think it was as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Sure, the graphics are a bit strange, but the game plays like I remember it.

My only qualm with this compilation is that they put too many racing games on it. If they could have substituted OutRun(After all, didn't OutRun 2 just come out?) or Monaco GP, with AfterBurner, it would have been better.

But, as a good compilation, I'd highly recommend this one. The only people who wouldn't enjoy it are the purists(It has to be 'arcade-perfect' types) or people who didn't enjoy the original games.

Twenty bucks. Buy it!

You have to remember that these games were released awhile ago in Japan under the SegaAges2500 series. I agree that After Burner should have had a US release but NEVER at the expense of OutRun. Monaco GP is on the disc as it was one of Sega's first driving games, but personally I could take it or leave it, especially when compared to some of the latter F-1 Circus games. ...they could have not put Columns on the disc and no one would be sad since it's the game least effected by the update.

Since the SegaAges2500 series seems to be doing pretty well in Japan let's hope that we get another compilation in the US later down the line and that AfterBurner II is included. As long as Sega Classics Collection continues to sell well (which doesn't look like that's a problem) I don't see why that wouldn't happen.

Who knows, maybe 3DAges will remake HangOn eventually and then all four of the powerhouse Yu Suzuki games will be updated. The only game I REALLY wish 3DAges would remake is the horribly underrated Radmobile (yeah, another driving game) which was Sega's first 32 bit title and it also featured the first apperance of Sonic the Hedgehog - even if he was just a little plastic figure hanging from the rear view mirror. :)

This is an awesome collection. My only regret is having waited 2+ weeks or so to pick this up, even passing up the $14.99 CC deal. (What was I thinking?)
However, $20 is WAY worth it if there are any more doubters.
No-brainer all the way....

I'm glad to see so many people picked it up. You can't afford not to!

I bought this game a couple of weeks ago, and I've only recently had enough time to play it and give my full opinion.

When I bought it, the guy at EBGames basically tried to talk me out of it. He said that they weren't the same games I'd remember. Whatever. They're better. The only one I have a complaint with is Columns, because I have the Genny cart, and I actually like it better (no version but the original genesis cart ever got the music right for columns. Even the Sega CD version, which should have been identical, screwed it up!)

The reason I drug out this thread, though is because I wanted to comment on the remake of Alien Syndrome. I never really liked Alien Syndrome. I've only played the SMS version when I was a kid, but even then I only really appreciated the game for aesthetic reasons. It's slow, clunky, and because the screen doesn't scroll, it's very confusing and difficult. But the new scrolling screen, dual-joystic control (this being by far the best feature) and all the goopy exploding slimey messes make it a much more enjoyable experience. I'm just amazed that they took liberties like this and made the game BETTER instead of just screwing it up, or just adding a bunch of cinemas and claiming "it's improved!!!!!!!!!" I'm impressed.

Oh, and that Fantasy Zone really is worth the $20 alone.

kainemaxwell
04-17-2005, 08:48 AM
First experience with Alien Syndrome is the NES version, I should play with the SMS rom when I get the chance, which I think I have somewhere, to see any differences before I buy Sega Classics Collection.

For real? Man that sucks, the SMS version was the first I ever had. Most of the NES ports Afterburner, Shinobi, etc. Look weird to me. Alien Syndrome is just brilliant and came out during the perfect timing of ALIENS. I'm surprised it didn't catch on well. Xenophobe is always remembered well of course.

Yet I like Alien Syndrome for it's Contra like appearence

Space Harrier is worth the 20 bucks for this collection ALONE. By far my favorite game.

I also enjoyed Alien Syndrome, Fantasy Zone, and Outrun for the thing. I noticed strangeness though, when I tried to play Virtua Racing and it didn't seem to detect my start or select buttons. Is it because I'm using a PS1 controller or something?

Yup, that's it. Virtua Racing Flat Out (the SegaAges remake in Sega Classics Collection) is picky about analog throttle / brake controls. Also if you use a GTForce wheel the start / select buttons go away from time to time as well. You should always play games with the console's base controller, at least to start out.

I'm disappointed with it, however the remake of Outrun was worth the 20 dollars. Hoping to get into Fantasy Zone eventually. Monaco GP was a disappointment, and Virtua Racing's physics are as weak as ever. And the rest I had no interest in so I can't comment on them.

Edit - Stumbled across this thread in 2011 and had to revise what I posted here. I've really fallen in love with several of the updates on this collection since 2005.

I would, but the stupid PS2 controller shorted out the first week I had it. I had a buddy's controller do the same on his PS2, so I'm thinking it's just a design flaw. Seems like a recurring theme with the PS2.

Thanks for explaining that, though.

I think you're both confused. The game on the Sega Ages disc is the Mark III game, which is different from both the Famicom and Megadrive games. (it's the one that came out on the SMS as Black Belt)

Sega Classics Collection< I picked up this game with the new PS2 and man am I surprised I mean this collection got such bad reviews online and in some of the mags that I held off on it at first but I have enjoyed every game on here especially Space Harrier,Golden Axe, Columns and Virtua Racing.

I luv the updated graphics and music in all of them sure they are not up to par with the latest Splinter Cell or whatever and some look slightly better than an upgraded PSone title but they are exactly what the doctor ordered for this old school gamer.

I really cant recommend this collection enough to anyone who grew up loving Sega at the arcade or on Genesis or both

Ill never take another review on a classics compilation from a mag or online serious again ;) these kids they call "experts"( and I use that term lightly) reviewers are full of shit and complete graphics whores IMOA. :pimp:

I dig the upgrades. But there's a big caveat to it.. IF I didn't have the originals to play in some other form or other, THEN I would've wanted the originals.

As such.. w/ Mame on the xbox amongst several other resources (including previous console ports of some of those games), I guess it made my mindset a lot more open to seeing the little tweaks they did and made it much more welcome to see some new twists & additions on the original formulas.. even if they were primarily graphic updates.

Same here, man....I wanted this most next to the PS Trilogy and the upcoming Alex Kidd Ages release. I've always been a huge fan of Last Battle, but not the Hokuto No Ken series in particular. I have the Japanese disc and the SMS version include on the disc crashes my system....Might have something to do with my mod chip and such, but I just don't know.
