View Full Version : Centerpiece of Your Collection?

The centerpiece of my collection would have to be my weathered and battered gold Legend Of Zelda NES Cart. It brings back so many fond memories, like me and my brother trying to get out of going to church "because we can't save the game right now (my dad knew it was BS, but my my mom was none the wiser), the anger when my baby sister ripped up our map (I still have a shred of it somewhere under my stairs), and along with that, the original NES controller and the NES Maxx controller that still work like champs after all of these years and countless hours of playtime.

probably my used, but boxed ltd. ed. final fantasy wonderswan color (comes in a box with the console and FFI, i think it's meant to come with a wrist strap, but being second hand, mine didnt:(. the box is pretty, and has a front that lifts up to reveal windows showing the console and game box.)
another would be my complete us super mario kart. my being in australia makes this ultra rare.
unfortunately i dont have any of my original consoles, aside from my classic gameboy that doesnt really hold any memories. i fried my snes while modding it (i can do it properly now), very disappointing. my original megadrive had a loose connection in the rf slot, we gave it to my friends dad when i was about 7 or 8 so he could try fix it, a few months later "no, we gave it back to you" i never saw it again.
even my first playstation was destroyed.. it fell off a speaker and on impact decided i didnt need memory cards or the ext port anymore.
a game which holds the most sentimental value that i still own, would have to be donkey kong country 2, probably the only game i played properly in my early days of gaming. to give you an idea, i remember making a cubby house out of a big cardboard box, and making a bed in it so i could sleep in it. i had a snes controller hanging from the ceiling, and the front was set up so i could see out and play dkc2 from inside.
there are many memories that go along with this one.

Mine would have to be my SMS Store Demo unit I got earlier this year:

I'm not sure whether you can call those centerpieces, but I'd say my Twin Famicom (I got for free from a friend) and a PC Engine Duo-RX (I bought for 14$ in a recycle shop) are close to what I'd call centerpieces. :)

While I have some decent rarities and a pretty hefty collection, I would say that for 'cool factor' it would be my boxed complete Vectrex. Coupled with the Multicart I recently picked up, I'm a happy boy.
Other more rare things:
- Decent sized 2600 collection, with some nice rarities like Malagai, CTCW, Gas Hog, Sunrise Quest, Master Builder, etc.
- Neo Geo AES; Having one is a rarity, I need to save up some cash and get some more carts though.
- N-64 Collection; Need about 30 carts to fill in the holes I care about. (non sports)
- Genesis Stuff; I like the Genesis. Thankfully most people don't.
- My NES Top Loader; The fact I found the deck only in the wild for $1.00 is what's cool about it. Not a Centerpiece aspect, but an amazing find where there was no haggling involved -- it was a <blink><blink> "Okay." moment and possibly my best find ever.
The thing is, that some of these just don't grab the casual observer, the unique design of the Vectrex is what makes it interesting to me.
And then there's my Transformers collection -- which has tapered off badly in favor of the gaming thing, but still again. I don't do it in small doses.
Hex.

Not really a centerpiece I guess, but it is my favorite. Resident Evil 4 Tin Special Edition with the Gamecube chainsaw controller. They are both right on the top of my shelf. That and a GTA San Andreas Pop Display.

Not rare in the least (worth about $100 I guess), but my collection of complete N64 games -- all of which are ones I purchased/received back in the N64's heyday. There's only about ten or so of them, but man, they bring back some good memories. And I'm pretty proud that I kept the boxes and all that stuff. OCD, maybe? LOL

I have a few which I think could be called centerpieces, but my favorite is my Mike Tyson full size stand up. Only 10 were ever made, and it was displayed ONLY at CES 1988.
Other than that, I think my other centerpiece is the Super Mario Bros 3 Talking sign. As far as I know I am the only collector who has one, and I have never seen another working one before.

No, mine isn't the new one that is always on Ebay. Mine is from 1989 and was made to promote the original SMB 3 for the NES.
If you want to know exactly what it looks like and says, check out :
http://nesplayer.com/database/merchandise/index.htm
It is the 2nd link down. That is my exact picture and I took a soundclip and sent it to NESplayer right after I got it.
I actually think that Mario says quite alot in the clip, even though the quality isn't the best, it still works just fine.

My centerpiece would have to be my Complete N64 Development Kit and the mysterious M3 blue disks. My Dreamcast Dev Kit would probably come in second. And my Castelvania Vampire's Kiss Poto, Earthbound Review Cart, Parasol Stars Proto get honorable mention.
I don't own any really rare games now that I think about it. My most valuable released game would be Keio Flying Squadron.
I get the most questions about the NES Powerglove and Virtual Boy system.

I suppose the closest thing to a centerpiece in my collection, or at least the most valuable, is a Sears Tele-Games Video Arcade Rev. A console (translation: Atari 2600 Heavy Sixer)

There's only two things that one might consider centerpieces of my collection:
My SNES. I'm the only owner of this one, and it hasn't yellowed yet.
The old Imagic Video Storage Center. I picked this up for $5 at a thrift, with twelve games (including two I didn't have, and all manuals), 4 switch Woody Atari 2600, Atari power supply (working), and Video Touch Pad. The cover has minor stress fractures from age, but the unit is in excellent condition. The smoke smell has even gone away.

I think the only other cool things I've picked up are an Arcade machine and a couple prototypes Rainbow Islands and Mega Man 5.

I suppose my Virtual Boy, since I'm the only one I know who bought one :)
In a couple weeks, though, it will be Radiant Silvergun, hopefully.
One of these days, I'm going to get that Twilight Zone Pinball :) Or a Ms. Pacman cocktail cabinet.

My centerpiece(s) would probably be my Virtual Boy with several complete games, my European Zelda GBA, and FFXI Beta.
Personally, I'm pretty partial to my R.O.B. and my SNES that I've had since '91.

I am personally very attached to my consolized 2-slot neo geo MVS which was one of the earlier ones put together, nothing fancy just painted black with an s-video out and a slightly (less than a few mm) cutoff picture but other than that works great. My favorite pieces for it are my complete english Shock Troopers kit and last blade 1-2 with the shock troopers being my clear favorite as it's always in one of the slots.

Well, my new centerpiece to my gaming collection is a working Neo Geo MVS 1 slot arcade cabinet. Everything works, although it was a conversion.
I can't complain though it only cost me $130.00 not a bad price for any arcade cabinet.

My Centerpiece(s) don't have a whole lot of value money wise, but do to me personally. I have 28 of the original 32 NES games my dad bought for me as child. All games include original booklet, and are in Nintendo Brand plastic hard case he purchased as well. Some games include Donkey Kong Classics, Blaster Master, Fester's Quest, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Metroid, Pinball, California Games, Gumshoe, and Super Mario 2. I asked my dad the other day why he bought some of the the games he did when I was younger, he responded with " I just bought what looked fun". He had a pretty good eye for a Nintendo game as he never bought me crap like Back to the Future or Friday the 13th. I just wish I still had the original boxes for the games and those 4 missing games.

For me its a 3 way tie between my Playstation cabinet, my Neo cabinet and my A.P.B. though I think the A.P.B. probably has the most personal value of the three.

Hmm... Centerpiece? Everyone who comes over is amazed that I have boxed systems.
My centerpiece is my Shin Megami tensei nocturne. I've got the 1st copy off the UPS truck when I worked at EB. With the Guide and a paper display box that we used to display it before it came out.
It's one of the few RPG's I love and will never give up.

The realistic answer is to say my MAME cabinet (http://videogamecollectors.com/gallery/The_Pantechnicon/IMG_0069) since that's the object that garners the most attention. But that's not a "collectible" item in any sense.
I guess I'll say my Vectrex, which is the one thing I really enjoy pulling down and showing off to people who've never seen my collection before.

03-08-2007, 08:25 AM
I am a collector, but to be honest I don't have anything that would really "WoW!" any fellow collectors. I add games to my collection based on quality, not rarity, and common sense tells us that good games will be less rare because more people bought them when they were released (in theory of course, not always the case). The most rare game I ever owned was probably Panzer Dragoon Saga, and it's no longer in my collection. The centerpeice of my collection in my own mind is probably my Virtual Boy collection.
But here's something that has to be sort of depressing, when you think about it as a collector. Let's say you own a copy of Nintendo World Championships 1990 for the NES, and you got out off eBay for the going price of $2000-$3000. Well, put your cartridge up against my $20 Zelda: Wand of Gamelon game for CD-i and show it to the average gamer-- which do you think he'll care about more? Truth is that the NES catridge is no match for the intrigue instilled in gamers by the god-awful Zelda games that most of them had previously never heard of. Dumb, isn't it? It's a sad life we live......

I don't own anything terribly 'rare', but whenever people visit they tend to comment on a handful of things like my copy of Ys 1 & 2 LE (PS2-J, with the little figures and base), Midnight Blue J-PS2, lemon yellow PS2 controller (Korean), and in general the big scary crate of controllers sitting off to the side.
For 'actually rare', hmm. Xenogears book, perhaps.

Well, mine changed since I was regularly posting here, so I'll add it on now.
A friend of mine gave me one of the old Coleco tabletop units from the 80s for Christmas. Donkey Kong, the only flaws is the missing top label, and there's a case of actiplaque on the marquee label. Still plays like a champ, too.

For me it would have to be 25 brand new, and sealed in mint shape with the horizontal seam, N64 games. I have all the megahits: ocarina of time, wave race, f-zero x, rush, smash brothers, paper mario, ridge racer, diddy kong racing, duke nukem, bad fur day, resident evil, goldeneye, perfect dark, TWINE, 1080 snowboarding, mario kart, etc. Most of those are going for 50 to 100 dollars on ebay in that shape, some even more.
Also have 25+ complete boxed games.
Also 100+ loose carts that I actually play.

Between collectors, I suppose some of my Playstation rarities (Gaiaseed, Mortal Kombat II, Salamander DX+) are sort of impressive. To average people, though, just the fact that my collection is 100% Japanese games always raises some eyebrows.
