Well, the title pretty much covers it. I have a Klonoa: Empire of Dreams GBA cart. If I recall correctly, it's supposed to auto save your location. But I let it sit in a drawer for over a year, and now it won't save. Or at least it hasn't been the last couple of times that I put it in.

The game will prompt me to choose a data save spot from one of three available empty slots. I choose one, accept the choice, and the game starts. I've tried choosing each of the three spots, with the same result. When I start the game again (either by shutting off the GBA or by soft reset in-game), all three data save slots are empty. In each case I have completed at least one "vision" (level), so it shouldn't be a problem of not reaching a save point.

So I ask:

1. Does the cart use flash memory to save, and it's simply that the memory has gone bad?

2. Does the cart use a non-rechargeable battery to power the save mechanism, and so the battery may be dead, but replaceable?

3. Does the cart use a rechargeable battery that may be run down from sitting for over a year, and so I may be able to revive it by just putting it in the GBA, powering it up, and letting it run for a while?
EDIT: Leaving the game on for two hours had no effect.

4. Is it possible that it's an issue with a corroded or dirty contact in the cart and/or cartridge port? The cart traces don't look too bad, but I suppose that cleaning both is the easiest possible fix.

I can't speak for that game specifically, but most use batteries. I'd open it and test the battery, see if it has come loose, that sort of thing. All you need is one post to spring free, and no save.
