Awesome! We got a few copies of DOOM 3 CE in today for the Xbox, they use the same exact metal and plastic case Halo 2 used with the clear matte plastic sleeve. And damn it looks SO COOL.

Frankly, I can't wait.

The PAL one is released on April 8th over here. Got mine pre-ordered already!

Jade Empire also have one too, so pre-ordered that as well!

Now if any game deserves a niche metal case, it's gotta be Conker!

I'm pretty sure it's this tuesday--- 4/5Believe it or not, the box they came in said 4/3. But I won't know until um, I find out.

Actually, I did not know we were going to be getting these things at my store. We never got the Halo 2 CE versions, so I got mine at GameStop. But if I had known we'd be getting DOOM 3, I wouldn't have pre-ordered it at GameStop.

The problem is that firstly, in order to change my 8 month old pre-order from regular DOOM 3 to DOOM 3 Collectors, I have to drive 11x2 miles a few days BEFORE (i.e. tomorrow) to change it, then drive out there AGAIN when it comes in. So to save gas in this damn energy crisis and some money, I will be driving out once to cancel. At least I get to keep the Pewter Baron of Hell. :P (They wouldn't let me change it over the damn phone!) Hell, if I didn't care about wasting $5, I wouldn't go at all. But I can SAVE $5 by buying it at my own store!

This'll look sweet on my shelf with Halo 2.

I'm still confused with the release date myself. I've seen 4/3, I've seen 4/4, I've seen 4/5. I'm calling tomorrow and asking the dept. manager as well to tell me what date it really is.

(BTW, our store only got 4 CE's in)

I'm pretty sure the release date is the 4th. Anybody notice that Blockbuster's GameRush is doing a midnight opening for Doom 3. I never expected I'd see that again after Halo 2. Xbox games seem to garner alot of interest.

Trust me, Doom 3 is good. It's my favourite and most played PC game right now, and I expect the translation to X-Box to be just as good. I preordered the limited edition despite the fact that I don't have an X-Box, BTW.

...Also, the expansion for the PC comes out on the eighth. =P

What's the Live play on this game going to be like? I heard allot of people bad mouthing it already. Isn't it 2-on-2 co-op and that's it?

Jasoco
04-02-2005, 05:52 PM
God, it's flooding here, so I can't go to GS to change my damn pre-order or even cancel it.

So I may lose my $5. No biggie. I got a Baron of Hell out of it, and that saves me from having to pay $10 to buy one from eBay. ;)

I will be buying it the second our computer lets me. (The box said 4/3, let's hope it is 4/3, even if GS and EB have them for 4/4. :P)

I can't wait to review this thing. Damn, I hope the DOOM I and II ports are perfect.

I just returned from my local gamestop. They had the game running but you could not buy it. I must say the game looks very sweet. I cannot believe they squeeze this much power out of the xbox. If you never played the pc version you will be blow away if you played the pc version you will be impressed. I played the pc version this morning and I cant complain with what I saw. My real question if doom is this good what happen to Call of Duty. There is a liberal control configuration screen. I'm sold. The xbox has had an impressive few weeks with chaos theory and doom. Now only if we can get Half life 2

The commercials have April 4th on them, but some stores are doing a midnight sale on April 3.

Online is only up to 4 people -- this isn't going to be a Halo 2 killer deathmatch wise, but the co-op mode is suppoed to be pretty sweet... I don't see anyone bitching about it -- all of the reviews I've seen have been pretty stellar

I'm picking my CE up tonight at midnight from Gamerush. I've never even seen the PC version in action before, so I don't know what to expect. The reviews sound great though so I'm sure I'll dig it.

If anyone wants to play some co-op later, send me an invite (GT: Norkusa). I won't be able to use my headset though 'cause I got pissed during Third Strike and broke it.

Just picked it up. Collectors Edition case is awesome. Halo 2 awesome. There is only one disc though, not a problem, at least it means it won't be piggy backed like Halo 2 was.

So far I've only tried the DOOM 1 port. It took a second to get used to, then I was into it. The port is perfect. Nothing is missing, transparent walls, all the enemies and weapons. The only changes are text. "Do you really want to Quit? Press A for Yes, B for No" and "Loading Doom 3".

I am now watching the "Icons" videos. They just showed part that morphed between the old enemies and the new versions. Pretty damn cool "evolution" there.

Can't wait to actually play the game. LOL

I've been playing for a few hours now and I can honestly say I am enjoying this more than Halo and Halo 2. The guys at id are geniuses. And damn, the enemies are persistent now. The newest enemy I met has a chainsaw (Well, not anymore, I have it now.) And before that I met the Cacodemons for the first time. They not be red no more.

Ho-lee crap. This is NOT my daddy's Doom. I'm still getting used to Imps appearing from practically out of nowhere, but thankfully, the damage that I take seems to not be as bad as it could be. Then again, all I've really had to deal with so far are standard zombies, Imps, marine zombies, and the occasional flaming zombie here and there. I'm also getting used to how little ammunition there is. In Doom and Doom 2, ammo clips and shotgun shells were practically given out like candy. But here, I actually have to conserve my ammo. I am expecting even greater challenges to come... bring it ON, you freaking sons of Satan. :rockets:

Jasoco
04-04-2005, 11:26 PM
I'll say one thing, I liked it when weapons didn't need to be loaded. Those were the days. Especially the Shotgun. Only 8 rounds, and it takes forever to load and it only runs out when you're fighting fast enemies so they are right in your face as you start to refil so you shoot off onme of the two you just put in and have to refill again, and have to shoot again and have to start refilling again and you get the idea.

No BFG yet. Can't wait to see what it looks like.

Edit: Crap. I think I just met the Arch Viles.. Not sure. They teleported in and shot fire waves across the ground. Not sure. Gotta look it up.

Yep. It was an Arch-Vile alright.

You guys pushed me over the edge on this one :) Not only am I a sucker for anything "Collector's Edition", the damn sexy metal box looked too nice with Halo 2 LE and SC Chaos Theory LE to pass up.

Only played for about an hour because of school work to get done, but so far it's been great. Although I would have loved to have had online play for Doom/Doom 2...friend of mine and I wasted a good deal of high school hours on direct modem connection deathmatches :)

Jasoco

Sad a few of my closest friends didn't like this game. Bah to them I say. They're spoiled by Halo and Half-Life. One of them was barely 4 years old when the first one came out, so what does HE know?

Bah I say. This FPS ranks second right behind Serious Sam on the Xbox for me. Mega fun. Mega scary. (Sometimes.) And aside from some quirks, super awesome looking. The graphics are amazing on the Xbox here.

Also, I wish I had a surround sound system in here.

And when a floor panel pops out of the floor and an Imp crawls out, be ready to send him right back under the floor boards.

Jasoco
04-05-2005, 12:59 AM
I just used a Teleporter for the first time. (They don't use them gratuitous in this game anymore. Which is good actually. In D3 it's an experimental technology rather than a "let's throw it in everywhere and make it like it's used all the time" thing.)

And well.. Bloody Hell. That's what it is. During the four seconds you are teleporting, it's like travelling through a bloody hell intestine. Yikes!

I used to be a PC snob too.

I don't miss rebuilding my PC every 6 months or so one little bit. :P

I know it would look better on a tricked out PC, but my carpal tunnel that Quake 1 ad 2 online gave me thanks me for switching back to consoles for gaming.

Holy Hell. I'm getting closer.

SPOILER

The level I'm on is covered in blood writing and I keep seeing enemies where there aren't any. He's playing tricks on my mind!

Edit: I have made it to Hell. This is like something out of a movie. It's amazing what is happening here!

SoulBlazer
04-05-2005, 04:08 AM
Yeah, that's where the game REALLY gets freaky. ;)

I will have to pick up the expansion pack they released this week for my Doom 3 PC version (and despite what everyone said, the game ran just fine on my 2-3 year old PC). Is that expansion in the XBox version as well?

How are you finding the controls? Easy for the PC version -- keyboard to jump and look around and move, left button to fire, right button to select things, scroll wheel to change weapons.

Jasoco
04-05-2005, 04:27 AM
I can adjust to a PC Keyboard layout just as easily as I adjust to the Xbox controller. Actually, I'm finding it quite easy. Ever since Halo redefined the way we move with the controllers, I can play any FPS, Even the original DOOM games I havve set to the same control scheme. And if I ever go back to a keyboard, I may try the same setup. (The setup I mean is left stick to move forward and back and strafe. Right stick to turn and look up/down. Vs. left stick to move and turn, right to strafe and look.)

Some parts of Hell seem to remind me of some levels of Serious Sam or Max Payne 1+2. Most notably the later warped/drug induced levels.

I got good news! :D

Wraiths and Cacodemons are now new threats, the number of Imps are increasing by a grand deal, I'm hearing more whispering and disembodied laughter, and I get the feeling that I will be in a huge bunch of trouble... yes, even more trouble than I'm already in.

... but what's the good news??!?

I just saved a bunch of ammo by switching to Chainsaw.:texaschain:

I am so freaking sorry for the overused Geico line, couldn't resist, please spare me.

I beat Hell and am now back to the base. Yeah, I am on Easy, but damn is it still hard. In time I'll probably be able to beat this on Hard like I can now beat the originals on the third or fourth difficulty, but for now, Easy it is.

I really really wish I could find the "They stole my baby..." part. The people at DoomWorld Forums say it's in Alpha base somewhere. It's in one of the "Icons" videos. He walks down a corridor and has a vision where everything turns red and a woman says "They stole my baby..." then footsteps lead you to a locker with ammo. I want to FIND THAT!!

Yeah but we got co-op :)

I'me lovin' it so far, but then again I've just gotten into shooters so I'm into anything FPS right now, it a whole cool new world to me. I love the enviorments in this, very creepy, all the dark shadows and such, I've jumped more than a few times after entering what I though was an uninhabited shadow.

I also like how you can't use a flashlight and gun at the same time, it makes the gameplay very creepy, and makes you think twice if you wanna find out what's in that dark corner or shoot first and ask questions later.

Jasoco
04-05-2005, 08:44 PM
It is, until level 6 or so. The first Pinky kicks my ass every time. It's because he attacks at the same time as that damn Imp. So I never make it past that part.

Sotenga
04-05-2005, 10:16 PM
I'm fighting on Medium (Marine) difficulty, and the curve is gradually increasing. At first, I was pissed that Imps kept appearing out of nowhere, but I eventually got used to that. Plus, the armor really cuts down on the damage you take. Welp, now, I realize that there is a factor of impermanence to the armor, and I just got my ass kicked recently... BY A FUCKING REVENANT. GODDAMMIT, I FUCKING HATE REVENANTS. They were, without hyperbole, one of my most hated demons in Doom II (below the Arch-Vile, Spider Mastermind, and Cyberdemon, of course), and they prove to be assholes here. Thankfully, I just learned that the Plasma Rifle destroys their rockets. I should use this advice, since I've just mainly been using my Chainsaw lately. LOL

Seriously, that damn Chainsaw is too freaking powerful. All I need is one second (oftentimes less) to reduce a demon to a corpsy mass of meaty gibs. I'm drowning in my ammunition now, but I best start using distance weapons now, what with the freaking Revenants... and Dr. Betruger keeps taunting me, so I expect pain to happen. Still, I'm doing well, and I expect to enter Hell soon enough. If my calculations are correct... I'm bound to face three Mancubi soon. :/

On the plus side, I picked up some rockets before I died, so I estimate that I'm not too far away from a Rocket Launcher. Bwahahaha... :rockets:

P.S.: Revenants suck.

P.P.S.: Who else found out how to play Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3? AWESOME. ROFL

Anyone disappointed with the controller vibration effect in Doom 3? I didn't even notice it was on when I was firing the pistol for the first time. It was so weak, I actually thought the option was switched off until I went to the options screen to confirm it wasn't. When I picked up the bigger guns like the shotgun and machine gun, I could notice but it still felt real wimpy.

The level design and layout in the later levels blows away their older stuff completely. Levels will start out normal metal structure, and gradually be replaced by organs and blood and fire pits before reforming as the original building again. Giant intestines, rib cages, it's super neato.

I'll tell ya one thing, the Cyberdemon is hard. Also.. he changed way too much.

CyberDemon was a pushover! One hit from my already-been-charged-since-Hell SoulCube and he was down. Dead. Lifeless (If you will) as a brick. Head down, no ammo at all would hurt him.

I mean wow. Why the hell was he easy? What the heck? He's the CYBERDEMON! (Or so they say..)

Something tells me Sarge WASN'T the CyberDemon. God I hope not. I want my two legged goat-like horned bullish CyberDemon!

According to the FAQ on GameFAQ's, the CyberDemon is Sarge with a Tank bottom. And the actual Boss is a "giant demon equipped with a rocket
launcher." But.. Isn't THAT the CyberDemon? ISN'T THAT THE CYBERDEMON? Who at id decided to change this? Or is the FAQ writer a moron?

That's it, some of you may have noticed that my "Now Playing" has had Doom 3 in it since it came out on PC, and I'm still only a quarter of the way through or so. To be honest the horrendous load times are what turned me off, and I've got a damn fine PC. The game looks great when i get into it but it takes forever.

I've gotta go back and finish it. I always thought the game got panned a bit too much, the atmosphere of the game is absolutely unbeatable. If you've got surround sound, use it. The first time I heard an Imp's fireball fly past my head and explode behind me I crapped myself and got a boner at the same time.

Jasoco

How long are your load times?

BTW, I can't stress how awesomely designed these last levels are. They may be short, but the detail is astounding. Especially the bloody organs growing out in some places, almost real looking.

Our time is here! Soon the humans will suffer eternal torment as spoken of in the prophecy. We will feast upon thier souls!

While opening sacrificial portals, it is important to remember:

- Virgin blood is best
- Goat blood must be no older than 3 days
- Entrails must be removed and apportioned either before death or no later than 30 min
- Candles must be sorted by tallest in back to shortest in front - never the other way around!

Most important - pentagrams must be drawn from the center to the outside and left to right.LOL

I concur on the atmosphere, and the random laughter and Latin chanting I hear also helps. Who's doing that shit anyway, Dr. Betruger? I just get the feeling that some eyeless screaming face is going to flash on the screen for a split second, and I'll be thinking "WHAT THE GOBBLES WAS THAT??!??" Heh... an example of me being startled: This one smart zombie marine made sure that the first thing I heard from him was a LOUD shotgun blast from close range. That one seriously startled me... beautiful. While the music to the first two Doom games is damn good, I think it was a good idea to sacrifice tunes for "ambience" here... and ambience I use loosely, as there are many noises that you are guaranteed to hear, just not much of it music.

Shit! I knew I shouldn't have quit after about 3,000 point or so. Aw well, at least they give you the option to replay all the maps you've cleared.

I remember the Boss FAQ you're referring to, but I took more heed of the Weapons and Enemy guide, which is rather more accurate.

So, who's doing all that Latin chanting and laughter? I'm pretty sure that it's Betruger, but is there some random force that I don't know about yet? And when do I get the Rocket Launcher, BFG, and Soulcube? As awesome as the Chainsaw is, I can't fight every demon up close and expect to walk away unscathed.

The BFG is found either later before Hell in a Security Office. Then another is found in Hell before the Boss fight outside of the wall. (You have to walk along the ledge to get it. You'll know where it is when you pick up BFG Ammo. SoulCube is after Hell. The Guardian is um guarding it. I used it once on the Saboth and he colapsed like a tree struck by lightning. What a let down he was. Oh well, he was a stupid "boss" anyway. The Rocket Launcher is in there somewhere too. You find it a few times. Once or twice before Hell and once or twice in or after Hell. (SPOILER: You lose all your weapons when you enter the portal to Hell.)

I still want to know where the damn "They took my baby" part is! It's so creepy I gotta find it!

I'm enjoying Doom 3 (Xbox) also. But one complaint. Why does it have you crouch when you push the left stick in? Apparently whenever I freak out and need to do a fast sidestep I put enough pressure on the stick so that instead of stepping out of the way, I crouch down and eat a fireball. Stupidest controller implementation ever.

As far as the BGM in the original Doom games versus the ambient sound in Doom 3, have you guys played Doom / Final Doom for the Playstation or Saturn? Those versions ditched the hard rockin' MIDI tunes from the PC version and instead had all kinds of creepy ambient sound. And while I did like the PC tunes, I thought the PS/Saturn version was even creepier because of the background noises. (Note: The PS version is better than the Saturn version, which runs slower and has slight controller input lag.) I had bought the PS versions of Doom and Final Doom to play full-screen co-op and deathmatch (via link cable), but I was pleasantly surprised by the bonus creepy factor.

I just went back to this game today and came to the sad conclusion that I will never, ever finish it. It just took me a long ass time to get through the Communications Transfer and I nearly crapped myself the whole way. I can never play more than one level at a time and even then I have to muster up enough courage to do so.

This game has turned me into a complete and total pussy.

The Super Turbo Turkey Puncher Threeee (Working one) is on a level after the attack in the break room, lounge, whatever you want to call it. You have to turn it on from behind though.

Someone on an FAQ says it's accessible before the attack, but I see no way how.

Also, there's a non-working one later in the game with no way to turn it on. But by then you got demons after your ass so you don't have time to play anyway.

Ok, well, I've beaten the game already (Cyberdemon is one of the coolest bosses I've ever seen -- the guy is friggin HUGE) so maybe I'll play it on my second go around (there's one email on a PDA that says how Quake 43 is way more fun than Super Turkey Puncher -- some of those emails are pretty funny, especially the martianbuddy.com ones).

I've played a couple of deathmatches online and thankfully havent run unto any asshats -- but it's just a matter of time, I guess...

Actually, I really like the controller setup, especially the way you can link weapons to the d-pad... comes in very handy when you get the soul cube.

The marine comes up to probably mid-calf on him. I haven't really been so impressed with the size of a boss since Loki in Ghouls N Ghosts.

Oh, I like the d-pad weapon select. But is there any time when an imp is heaving a fireball at you that you want to be ducking? I suppose I'll have to go into the controller configuration and see if I can re-bind "crouch" to "down" on the D-pad and then set it as a toggle. So I stop crouching when I mean to sidestep.

Man, you guys are determined! It seems like I've been playing for ages, and I still haven't reached Hell yet! :(

Plus, I missed the Rocket Launcher, so it's kinda irritating to get rockets without anything to load them in... *grumble* I took out those three Mancubi with all the grenades I had, and still had a surplus left over. I still mainly use my chainsaw for pretty much everything, though maybe I should utilize a more practical weapon. So, here, I ask a question: What's considered to be the best all-purpose weapon to take care of most demons? I'm thinking that the Chaingun or Plasma Rifle could fit the bill.

Hell is awesome. Keep going. Where are you? What skill are you on? How many times have you died?

I had the machine gun, plasma rifle, chainsaw, and shotgun for my "hotkey" weapons. Once I got the soul cube, I replaced the chainsaw with that.

The chaingun is nice, but you don't get too much ammo for it, and it takes a second or two to warm up. I usually only busted it out when I was low on health or I knew there was big enemies like Hell Barons lurking about.

The plasma rifle is also good especially since it destroys most projectiles the demons fire, but the reload time is a bit slower than the machine gun. And again, you don't get too much ammo for it.

I primarily used the machine gun and shotgun, since that is by far the most common ammo.

I hate Chainguns. That delay is always the deciding moment wheter you kill the bastard or get your spine ripped out. It seems every FPS has both a Chaingun and a Machinegun. The Chain is always more powerful, but the ammo is so little and the delay is terrible. I usually end up only using the Machinegun because of how fast it shoots. Why have both? Just have the super fast and powerful Ubergun. Geeze.

As for the SoulCube. I used it once. On that Saboth guy. He was dead in a millisecond. Seriously, I didn't even hit him with anything except the Cube. Killed him dead. Took his gun. Then tried to kill him more because I was SURE it was just a trick. I knew he'd come back to life eventually. I just knew it. So I stuck around wondering when he'd get up. He never did. Eventually I discovered the open crawlspace to leave through.

Most disappointing "boss" ever. Hope the CyberDemon puts up more of a fight.

Welp, sir, I'm in Hell now... sure am. I'm on Medium skill, and I died... quite a bit, though, mostly I restart from a designated point on my own volition because I'm a bit uptight sometimes about losing armor.

Hell... is... AWESOME. I feel like I'm back in classic Doom, only the entire world's been scrambled, turned topsy-turvy, and put through a blender. Such greatness this is... but what a tough! I'm up to my armpits in Hell Knights and Mancubi, and I sure can wait to fight an Arch Vile! I'm surprised how much improved the Mancubus is from Doom II... those fat bastards are freaking hard! I'm a little stingy about utilizing more than five rockets on them, but I have to... gah. Can't wait to get the Soulcube... but I know I'll have to fight the Guardian for it. ^^;

I have heard others (in other forums) say that Xbox's with Thomson drives glitch up at times, and get disc errors when you try to play VS. mode--have any of you experienced this? I unfortunately have an Xbox with the dreaded Thomson drive--figures.... x_x

I've put in about three hours on my Thompson-equipped Xbox and not experienced any glitches yet. But then, some Thompsons work, and others don't. If yours hasn't given you trouble in other games, then I probably wouldn't worry about it too much.

Welp, I'm in the caverns now, and I'm very close to the end of the game. :D

Let's recap: First off, Hell was a blast. As ironic as it sounds, I want to be back there. Heh... the Guardian put up a worthy fight, but he fell easily enough. And of course, I got the Soulcube as a result. Holy godDAMN, this thing is awesome! It's too bad that it can only be used once every five demons and all demons you kill after that aren't cumulated. Still, this damn thing practically kills instantly, and the biggest demons restore your entire life! I almost feel like a criminal using the Soulcube! GLEE!

I didn't have it charged when I went up against Sabaoth, but I'll agree with you, Jasoco. I expected it to be of higher difficulty, but his BFG did drain an adequate amount of life. Supplies nearby after the fight quickly alleviated that. Well, no matter, I got a BFG now. However, I'm pissed that I missed the Chainsaw in the Delta Complex, but since I'm close to the end of the game anyway, and it's probably a better idea to fight all fights now at long range, I'm not too broken over it. However, I... I got lost playing through the caverns. I couldn't figure out how to activate that damn lift to get me to the lower levels. I must have been doing something wrong, so I intend to retry it soon.

Arch-Viles = UGH. Definitely the worst non-boss bastards in the game, and I thought they couldn't be any more bastardlike from Doom II. While their fire attack is a little easier to dodge (little is the key word there, it still covers a great range) and it doesn't do as much damage, it's still a pain to get hit by. But these bastards are fast, take a good amount of damage, and they summon other demons from out of nowhere... SOULCUBE THESE ASSHOLES. If you can, that is. If not, rockets or BFG blasts will suffice.

I await the final encounter against the Cyberdemon. Oh mercy. :eek 2:

You can get the BFG real early, at least in the PC version (See: www.martianbuddy.com). The most dissapointing feature of Doom 3 is probably the ease of all of the bosses.

Btw, the Archvile was a lot worse on Doom II. They're chickenshit in doom 3, what, with my freelook and... strafing... =P

You haven't played Doom 3 until you've played Doom 3 with the double-barreled shotgun. Ecks-dee

Am I seriously the only one who found the cyberdemon easy?

I'm just gonna cheat from here on out. I'm really sick of having to use the fucking shotgun for everything because thats the only ammo I can find.
