Stunt Racer 64 is by far the most impressive looking racer on the system. I really loved Diddy Kong Racing back in the day. Cruis'n Exotica and the Snowboard Kids games were great too.

4 player Mario Kart 64 was always oodles of fun, but I like the GC version more... yeah, I guess I lose some old-school points for saying that. LOL

Extreme-G 2 (I think that's the title). Probably the best racer I've played on the N64. Great tracks, variety of weapons, and good enemy racers.

Altough I never really liked the N64, I had multiple racers. My facorite will be Mario Kart 64. The Cruise 'n USA/World/Exotica war not as bad, but maybe I only liked them as they were they only home version. San Fransico Rush was also good. I was disapointed with the Top Gear games, but I prefer the SNES-versions of the series above the one on N64. I think this are the games I played, oh I forget the Horrible Mickey Mouse Driving game, and the quite good Ridge Racer 64. I think that's it for me.

It'd have to be Diddy Kong Racing, with Extreme-G in second.

Wow, I can't believe this thread got this far with no mention of Beetle Adventure Racing or Excitebike 64.

Ridge Racer 64 and Wipeout are also good...I usually don't consider Wipeout when I think of racing games.

F-Zero X! Speed... I could never stand the original on SNES, but X was great. Brought me in to the F-Zero series, which will eventually be ruined by this cartoon and Awkward Story modes. AX / GX is a dandy too!

Another one I used to play a lot was Star Wars Episode I: Racer. That was pretty fun. A lot of tracks / racers and all of the upgrading was pretty darn nifty.

EDIT: Totally forgot about Wave Race 64, that was a great one too. And I've only played maybe an hour of ExciteBike 64, but it was quite enjoyable.

Beetle Adventure Racing is still one of the most enjoyable arcade racers ever produced.

Mario Kart 64 first and foremost, but there are a ton of great racers on the N64. Defineately Beetle Adv, the Cruisn's, San Fran's, World Driver. Top Gear was the first racer ever to have NO background pop up and it had a cool paint your own car feature. Diddy Kong, Wave Race, Ridge Racer..... all the futuristic racers..... where does it end?

MegaDrive20XX
05-01-2005, 01:47 PM
1. F-Zero X
2. Mario Kart 64
3. Wave Race 64
4. Wipeout 64
5. Beetle Adventure Racing

(no real order)

Stunt Racer 64 IS the bomb... to bad it was a rental exclusive! Very few people have played this game, and that's a big, big shame.

It came out very late in the N64's lifecyle and was originally supposed be a regular release, then was cancelled, then finally made it to Blockbuster stores. Most stores got one copy.

It's from Midway, but (believe it or not) it's not using the San Francisco Rush engine OR the Cruis'n USA engine. And its a good one!

The graphics are very, very nice... it even has a high resolution mode that turns it into THE sharpest and prettiest racer on the N64... bar none, but it's a LETTERBOXED format that makes the game much less enjoyable. The regular version is quite lovely, though.

Mariokart 64 if friends are playing it with me - it's one of the best games for trash talking.

Wipeout 64 if I'm playing on my own - the 4 player is neat, but unless you have a huge tv, it's near impossible to play the split screen modes. Excellent in 1p mode.

I haven't tried all the racers, but Mario Kart 64 and Xtreme-G 2 (not 1, it scored decently enough back in the day but looks very, very dated) are great stuff.

Waverace 64 is by far my favorite N64 racer. The feel of splashing through the waves and the almost dream-like environments set it apart from other racing games.

I just went to Game Crazy and I got Stunt Racer, and Cruis'n World. It would have been 29.99 and 14.99 USD, but thanks to the sale they were having, I only got it for five each.

I'm a fan of mario kart 64. Huge fan, I think it was the best in the series, and we played it all the time at my buddy's video game parties. That said, F-Zero X was the better single player racer, and is probably my favorite overall on the platform.

I want to give the star wars racer a try sometime, but I haven't found the time yet.

Mario Kart 64. I don't really like any of the other racing titles on the system.

I'd have to pick Wave Race. I fell in love with that game. I totally skipped over it in '96 thinking I wouldn't like it, but when I found it a few years later for $8 I thought I'll give it a try. Played it until I had everything conquered.

The only other racer I really enjoyed was the original Extreme-G. It might have been half fog, but it was fast and had awesome course designs. Oh and I almost forgot Ridge Racer 64. Its good and all, but it just feels wrong.

I thought all the Cruisn' games were crap, Mario Kart 64 & F-Zero X couldn't compare to the originals, and couldn't get into Lamborgini or MRC or any of the other millions of racers released.

PS. I'm sorry but the original SF Rush sucked. It was one of my most anticipated games until I played it. Terrible, terrible conversion. I still play it every once in a while hoping that somehow it will magically be good, but I just laugh at it and turn it off.

Mario Kart 64 & Wipeout 64.
Mario Kart 64 is still my fav multi player of all time.
Great graphics, audio and execution. It's as close to perfect as the 64 got. (IMO of course)

My favorites are:

1. Super Mario Kart 64-This game was by far the most enjoyable game I had for the Nintendo 64. Me and my family would play all tracks in versus every night; it was a lot of fun.

2. Diddy Kong Racing-Had a blast with this one too. I liked how they incorporated a Super Mario 64 feel to it.

3. Wave Race 64-This game had its moments. I'm still quite partial to the soundtrack and the awesome tricks you could pull off.

4. F-Zero X-Although I had this game for a short period of time, I enjoyed it alot. Being a fan of the original and being used to playing only 4 cars, I found this to be an awesome upgrade to the series.

Nice topic.

My favorite is Mario Kart 64. I hardly ever have my N64 hooked up these days, but when I do, I play through all the cups at least once.

That's followed by Beetle Adventure Racing, Diddy Kong Racing (great career mode), San Francisco Rush, Crus'n USA, Micro Machines 64 Turbo, and Star Wars Episode 1 Racer.

N64 racers I have in my collection, but haven't tried out yet:
Wave Race 64, WipeOut 64, California Speed, Extreme-G 2, Ridge Racer 64, Mickey's Speedway USA

N64 racers I want to get:
Stunt Racer 64, Cruis'n World, Crus'n Exotica, Rush 2049, F-Zero X

N64 racers in my collection I thought were so-so:
F-1 World Grand Prix
GT 64 Championship Edition - weak track selection, and the graphics, controls, and sound leave much to be desired. Not an awful game, not a horrible game, but there are too many racers on the system to recommend over this one. However, if you want to race in a Skyline on your N64, I believe this is the only option.

I spent lots of time over the weekend with Excitebike 64 (thanks Gamecrazy). Very fun game!

Does anyone have an extra Stunt Racer 64 cart they can part with? I'd like to try it out!

I didn't see anything mentioned about Aero Guage. I've been thinking about getting it since I dig (almost) anything by Agetec. Does it rock/suck? The only N64 racer I have is S.F. Rush 2049 & that's a blast.

I loved Star Wars Racer 64, I agree with others it had a very good sense of speed. I am nearing a complete set of N64 games, and of the ones I have played, my second and third choices would go to Mario Kart 64 and F-Zero. One thing is for sure, N64 had a shitload of racers, at least 30 to 40.

Geez....where to begin.

The biggest problem with being an N64 owner was that the Playstation guys had Turismo and the N64 didn't. That got solved really fast once World Driver Championship was released. You have to really concentrate with the later, more powerful cars because if you make even one tiny mistake, one blink, you're done. My favorite, mainly because it WAS a "serious" racer for the N64.

I love Beetle Adventure with all of it's crazy shortcuts. I clocked the most time with Top Gear Rally (R.I.P. Boss Game Studios....I miss you). Overdrive isn't bad either...very pretty to look at. Monaco Gran Prix is a great F1 "sim" with super tight controls. Destruction Derby 64 is another fantastic one that I don't think has been mentioned yet. F-Zero is incredible eye candy.

I started out as a race gamer on an N64 and I have no complaints.

Just found out I forgot already most of the N64 racers I played, damn I had much more games then I mentioned in my earlier post. F-Zero X, Beetle Adventure, Wave Race 64, Excitebike 64. Damn my memory is getting worse already I'm afraid. Anyway sadly the Stuntracer gamer is hard to find, I would love to give that game a try once.

Episode 1 Racer is by far my favorite. The sense of speed and the amount of shortcuts each track has is awesome IMO. I have always wanted to get the expansion pack to enjoy it with sharper graphics, but I am a bit skeptical about it. Is it worth getting an expansion pack? Does the game take a huge face lift graphics-wise?

Wow, I think this is the first time I've ever completely agreed with ubersaurus. :P

Now that I think about it, not only did the N64 have a lot of racers but the quality ratio was extremely high. While Mario Kart 64 and F-Zero X are my favorites, I like nearly every other racer I have for the system too. The only ones I don't like that much are Multi Racing Championship, NASCAR 99 (only because I can't get into NASCAR games), Wipeout 64 (okay on its own, but lame when compared to all other futuristic racers out there), and Cruis'n USA (which I admit I loved backed in the day, but now it's pretty cheesy and unbearable).

This topic sure gives me a lot of good ideas for racers to add to my collection. :)

Not to hijack, but are we talking kart games or racers? Yeah there's racing involved in both, but I just can't put Mario Kart and Ridge Race in the same catagory.

That said, my fave racer for the system is Ridge Racer 64. They did a nice job with that one.

F-ZERO X, barely above Beetle Adventure Racing.

F-ZERO X was the first racing game I actually enjoyed. It's just so damn fast. I still prefer it to the Gamecube sequel.

Beetle Adventure Racing is a sadly overlooked N64 game, because it isn't made by Nintendo.

Here are my top 4 racing games for N64:

4. MRC: Multi-Racing Championship
3. Extreme-G
2. Mario Kart 64
1. Diddy Kong Racing

"WipeOut 64" sucked, "Lega Racers" was much better on the
PC (But still kinda fun), "F1 Pole Position 64" was boring, and I have not tried "Extreme-G 2", "F-Zero X", or "Wave Race 64" yet.

I recall this being one of the times where the NP reviewer's raving was justified ('97 issue). He said that indeed, out of all the games he'd played, Diddy Kong Racing was by far one of the most beautifully presented up to that point. Better texturing of models for one (wrap-around instead of painted directly onto specific polygons). I recall it looking pretty good.

I haven't tried out a number of these racers yet (I only have a faint recollection of what Diddy plays like). Still like Xtreme-G 2 and Mario Kart 64.

It's from Midway, but (believe it or not) it's not using the San Francisco Rush engine OR the Cruis'n USA engine. And its a good one!

That might have something to do with the fact that it's developed by the wonderful team at Boss Game Studios.

You'll notice that the Midway name appears also on World Driver Championship and the US version of Top Gear Rally. They were merely responsible for publishing it. But the development credit goes to Boss. How I miss those guys. Was a sad day when I read they'd closed down. :(

Anyway, N64 racing games. Racing games are my favourite genre of game and the N64 is my equal favourite console to the DC. Here are the N64 racers I currently own, with a little comment about each one;

Cruis'n USA - my first N64 game, and whilst I loved it then, time has NOT been kind to this title.

Cruis'n World - holds up a lot better than USA, thanks to more tracks, better graphics, more cars, lots more play modes and split-screen multiplayer. Single player mode is dull though.

Diddy Kong Racing - The adventure mode is good one time through, but beyond that I found little reason to return to this game. Nice graphics, but the multiplayer (which is what this game should make you want to come to) doesn't offer much appeal.

F-1 World Grand Prix - One of my favourite racers during the N64's life span, it's surprising how well this has stood the test of time. Aside from the out-dated driver roster, the gameplay is still very detailed and highly challenging.

F-Zero X - I adored this game for about a month when it first came out, and then after I finished it, I never felt compelled to come back to it. It's fast, but the tracks designs aren't very interesting. Four player mode is solid.

GT64: Championship Edition - It was crap then and it's crap now. Blurry graphics, choppy frame rate, average controls. The only thing that I love is the funky music in the menus. :-P

Hydro Thunder - Overshadowed by it's almost arcade perfect Dreamcast port, the N64 version is still impressive. I recently played through this again and it's a great deal of fun, thanks to good physics and great track design. Midway! Make a sequel! You've got a great and unique game sitting here!

Mario Kart 64 - Shallow single player is excused by the awesomely addictive multiplayer mode. Still to this day, it's one I come back to for Battle and VS. mode. And it's still a LOT better than the horrible Double Dash.

Mickey's Speedway USA - I haven't played it enough to pass full judgement, but from the looks of things it's OK. Like, Diddy Kong Racing without the Adventure mode. And I think that may hurt it because it seems slightly monotonous. Also, the blurry graphics are puzzling considering it's release date and Rareware's good track record with the N64.

Multi Racing Championship - Average. The gameplay is sometimes fun but I find the awkward controls getting in the way. Also, it's stupid that you can win anything by using the King Roader.

Penny Racers - I got past the average graphics and stiff controls, simply because racing to acquire new and wacky parts is SO addictive. The track editor was very limited in this game, but I applaud them for bothering to put it in the game.

Re-Volt - Definitely one of my favourite N64 racers. Good graphics, highly realistic control and entertaining tracks all make this a great fun game. Multiplayer is great fun and the highly detailed (yet easy to use) track editor can keep me happy for hours. My only gripe is that the memory management on this game (I've had several copies all do the same thing) is very poor and will often result in loss of data (even with official Nintendo Controller Paks).

Ridge Racer 64 - A good effort, but I found it to be underwhelming compared to Ridge Racer Type 4 on PSX. However it's still the only RR game to support a 4-player mode.

Roadsters - Spiritual successor to Automobili Lamborghini by Titus. It's alright, and offers some nice features, but there's nothing remarkable about it. One of the few N64 games with licensed cars.

S.C.A.R.S. - There's not really much to this, essentially Mario Kart with animalistic cars. It's alright, but the game felt very dated even when it was released.

San Francisco Rush - Definitely one of my favourite racers on the system. Whilst it's two sequels improved on it in many ways, the original is still an absolute blast and the two-player mode is a great way to spend a day with friends.

Star Wars: Episode I Racer - Very fast, and very fun. Captures the essence of the film scene, and turns it into a great game. Very long and very tough. Some frame rate issues do occur though (especially in two-player mode).

Top Gear Overdrive - Probably the best looking racer on the console once you've got an Expansion Pak installed. The gameplay felt like a nice homage to the 16-bit Top Gear games. Whilst the gameplay was alright, the game often feels like a beta. Glitches galore! I often find myself driving on a straigh piece of road, and car just falls through no reason. Start jumping through the air, and the game engine spazzes out. Things get worse in multiplayer. Such a shame as it could've been one of the best N64 racers.

Top Gear Rally - Boss Game Studios show how it's done. Excellent tracks, realistic physics (for the time) and although controls may seem hyper-sensitive, persistence will see you through. I enjoyed every second of this game, and I STILL come back to it to this day. Paint shop was a blast, either for creativity, or for just pasting immature crap on your car. Two-player mode was a little disappointing, but at the end of the day, it's probably one of my top three racers on the console.

Top Gear Rally 2 - Highly anticipated by me (and many others), but Saffire's attempt at updating TGR fell short. It does improve in almost every way. The championship mode is incredibly detailed and borrows a LOT from Gran Turismo. Customisable parts, licensing, realistic cars (not to mention three licensed ones). The graphics were pretty good, and would've looked better if Saffire had bothered to include Expansion Pak hi-res support. It fails simply because it's controls. The cars don't handle very well at all. They bounce around like, slow-motion beach balls, and the game engine goes a nutty once you reach the faster cars. A big sham considering everything else that it's go going for it, and you may wish to ignore the control issues to enjoy what the game does offer.

V-Rally: Edition '99 - I pride myself on my ability to master and adapt to almost ANY racing game. But N64 V-Rally leaves me baffled. The car control is IMPOSSIBLE. It's a battle just trying to keep it in a straight line, not to mention the unforgiving nature of the track environment. Once minor graze of the track edge cause your car to spin, flip-out or roll over. I rented this title many years ago, and actually managed to finish it though. I don't know how the hell I did it, because today, I can't even control it.

Wave Race 64 - Aside from being a bit short on longevity, WR64 is definitely one of the most playable and impressive N64 racing games. Super-real physics and tight controls are what makes this game a joy to play. The great track designs also help a great deal. Superb stuff. Two-player mode is good despite pop-up.

Wipeout 64 - I scoffed at this game when it came out, and I have no idea why. Probably one of the most over-looked games on the N64, WO64 is brilliant. Great controls, excellent tracks and such atmospheric music. Multiplayer mode holds up suprisingly well too.

World Driver Championship - A complete triumph. The best 'serious' N64 racing game. Unbelievable graphics, excellent controls, great track design, heaps of cars. It's just brilliant.

Other ones I've played to an extent are Automobili Lamborghini (OK), California Speed (ugh), HSV Adventure Racing (aka, Beetle AR, okay, but a little boring), Lego Racers (damn good fun), Rush 2: Extreme Racing USA (great) and San Francisco Rush 2049 (greater).

good for you :D It would have been better if they tried to make their own type of game but it's way to similar to mario kart... to be it's own game and it's not even as good imho

so Wipeout fans is wipeout64 better than fxzero/gextreme etc etc I've only played wipeout64 and it's pretty damn good so?

"F-1 World Grand Prix - One of my favourite racers during the N64's life span, it's surprising how well this has stood the test of time. Aside from the out-dated driver roster, the gameplay is still very detailed and highly challenging."

How could you enjoy that with the messed up way they did the steering (trying to simulate a wheel with a analog joystick)? Monaco Grand Prix is so much more fun in my opinion.

I bet F1 World Grand Prix (Its F1, not F-1, but someone forgot to tell them that :) ) would be much better with a N64 steering wheel.

Mario Kart 64 will probably always be my favorite. Though, F-Zero 64 (I believe that's it's name) would be a close second. Still need to get my own copy of Mario Kart, someday.

Diddy Kong Racing was awesome. DKR was the most fun I had with a game until I got Crazy Taxi.

Top Gear Rally 1 was great. I rented it about four times, but I never bought it. I'm hoping to find a cheap copy. I got a cheap copy of TGR2 last year, hoping it would be like the first game but better, but it wasn't. It didn't even have the awesome custom decal creator the first one had.

World Driver Championship was also cool. Like TGR1, I only ever rented this one.

Aero Gauge is an underrated racer. It's like the plane races in DKR. It's a blast to play, but it doesn't have nearly enough tracks.

Wow, I can't believe this thread got this far with no mention of Beetle Adventure Racing or Excitebike 64.

While I personally like Beetle Adventure Racing, a friend of mine was not impressed by the game when he saw it for the first time 6 months ago. The fact that there's only ONE model of car, how they don't really slow down when you go off the road and no damage is what he has issues with.

I kind of agree with him on most of those points. They certainly could have put more effort into having an actual choice of models in the game. IE: New AND Classic Beetles, maybe some as convertables or dune buggies so that it would be more like the PC game "Beetle Buggin'".

Officially licensed Beetle racing game is here! Participate in five distinct events: speed, jump, buggy, monster, and cross. There are 17 different Beetle models to try, over 20 tracks, and realistic physics. Two-player split screen mode or 6 players via LAN. Weather conditions, day and night racing, and more.

Instead you have one car body that lets you change color, rims and performance. But basically it's a whole racing game with ONE model of car.

Beetle Adventure Racing seems more like a video game advertisment for new Beetles than a serious game when compared to Beetle Buggin.

That sounds like Aero Gauge or Extreme-G to me, actually. I don't recall the hovercrafts in diddy kong being able to go on the walls & ceilings, though I haven't played it in a loooooong time.

Toss up between Wave Race and Mario Kart.

Although, I don't really like racing in Wave Race... I just like riding that Dolphin Around. 8-)

Well I actually do have an N64 steering wheel, and I usually played that game with it.

...my fave racer for the system is Ridge Racer 64. They did a nice job with that one.
Cap, I can't believe that you are the only one who has said anything positive about this game. It is my favorite N64 racer because it perfectly translates RR: Revolution's arcade gameplay to the N64 controller while updating all of Revolution's tracks, and adding a few extras on top of it, AND including 4 player racing! I can't believe more people haven't played this awesome game!

My runner up (a tie, really) is excitebike 64. I Played this game for hours upon hours when I worked at Nintendo. The randomly generated desert that went on for infinity was incredibly fun to roam around in, and all of the mini games (curse you uphill!) were very fun and totally replayable. Plus the track design was sheer genius (the track editor wasn't too shabby either).
