So.
I heard this was the lamest thread ever created. Is that true?
My sources say yes. Though in fairness, the lameness kind of created itself shortly after the initial post.

Actually I thought this was a rather entertaining thread.
My apologies to any bystanders who ended up as collateral damage. Also, I don't think rob's an idiot or trying to cover something up, but I do think this will be a great divide between the two of us until the very bitter end :D

Yes, but it's all Ed's fault! WAAHHHH. (foot stomping)
Just kidding. That was my sarcastic temper tantrum impression. LOL
Ed, you've always been cool in my book, heh heh. This thread soooooo doesn't matter concerning that. But if you slept with Samus like I had then you'd know all her secrets as I do and you'd see the light. :D
So, yeah, I was trying to cover something up, but not what anyone thought. ;)

Oh, crap - *jumps for cover, realizes it's behind a life-size Samus doll*
Hah, David Brit blew your cover already ;D I bet if we went and asked at the right places we could find any number of pertinent documents LOL

Well, is it true or isn't it?
Pfff, so now I'm a liar? I'm telling my mom on you. ;)
Of COURSE it's true!
Ok, Ok, I'll level with you.
It turns out she refused to sleep with the narrator of the instruction book so he made up some shit to ruin her rep across the galaxy.
<sigh> Promise you won't tell anyone I told you, k?

You guys are so lucky this thread isn't in the Pub, or I'd be digging out a Samus-with-a-dick picture this very minute.

Well that's a sure way to get it there. :D
If I wasn't so damn awesome, I'd say, "I double dog dare ya." However, I am that awesome, so I won't.

What? There are forums besides VG, B&S, and Imports?!

Well, the instructions also say that Samus is a "bounty hunter"... but obviously, Nintendo and gamers never took that one seriously either. LOL
If poor translations and manual text conversions brought in a 2¢ every time they happened during the 80s, Capcom would be millionaires.
Oh wait... they are. :/

You know, this really seems rather simple.
There's two explanations for why Samus is called a 'he' in the Metroid instruction manual -
1) Done on purpose to play on gamers assumptions and make a surprise ending
2) A poor translation job from the original Japanese and thus a error.
Someone allready mentioned eariler in this thread that Nintendo was allready asked this question and said the reference was NOT a error. Hence, by default, that leaves choice #1 -- it was done on purpose to be a surprise ending.
What the heck is all of this extra debate for? :)

Well I guess Nintendo must be lying, except they wouldn't do that! Let's debate how Nintendo lies to us. <strokes beard and ponders>.

EDIT: Just playing devil's advocate here, of course.

But they were asked the question in the last few years -- hence, over 10 YEARS from the original release of the game. Sure, I can see lying about it if it was close to the release (I still remember their BS answer on why NES games cost so much!) but what do they have to gain from lying about it NOW? They allready have admitted how many translation and typographical errors existed from the 80's, and I seriously don't think many people care about it (except for the die hard Metroid fans ;) )

Nintendo was allready asked this question and said the reference was NOT a error.
When you say "Nintendo said" you really mean "some PR individual who currently works for Nintendo who wasn't there for the NES era and, almost certainly, has never played Metroid and probably has very little interest in older games in general, and probably didn't do any research on the question other than to ask the coworker he knows who's been there the longest; said".

I just stumbled across this thread after misreading the topic - I thought Samus had been referred to as a mule, and I was thinking "Wow! That completely changes my whole perception of the game!" But...turns out that wasn't the case.
Glad to see we've got everything sorted then. Carry on.

I would HOPE that the PR guy had dug into the issue a little bit before answering the question. They USED to do that in the old days. I admit I don't know if Nintendo still gives a damn about answering questions, but the bottom line for me is that someone at Nintendo has said the translation was'nt a error, and until someone else contacts Nintendo and gets a different answer, that's good enough for me. :)
