The black one is far more rare.
Complete prices fluctuate rapidly between $20-$40.

The Tengen Tetris was never released as a licensed NES game-only Gauntlet, RBI Baseball, and Pac-Man.

I know that, but wasn't the first batch grey? I could be wrong, but for some reason I remember seeing some grey versions from Tengen (I'm not confusing this with the Nintendo version).

That's it? That's nothing, I was expecting it to go for in the $100 range right now.

There was only the one "batch", and it was all in Tengen's black cartridge design.

Read the first reply in this thread (by boatofcar). I'm not the only one here who remembers the grey version. Unless he was thinking of the licensed Nintendo version...

Given that I've never seen a gray version of Tengen Tetris even mentioned by anyone else before, you're either mistaken, or aware of what could be a major find.

When you say the gray one, do you mean Nintendo Tetris?
If so, that one is worth a million billion dollars.

OK guys, I guess I was mistaken with this one. Perhaps the original ads showed it as grey, and that's what I'm thinking of?

Only black, the color of my heart. The grey one was an official, inferior release.
Man, I just not noticed Tengen Tetris did a huge drop on ebay...why?

because it is common as crack in the hood.

Mainly uninformed collectors think Tengen Tetris is rare. The only time it goes for any kind of real money is on Ebay when two misinformed n00bz get in a pissing contest. Its got a reputation for being really rare, but it isn't.

I have a magazine ad that shows a "licensed by Nintendo" Tengen Tetris box, but it doesn't show the cart.

This is from a 2 page advertisement for Tengen games.
the other games are RBI Baseball, Pac-man, and Gauntlet. The second page of the ad just has a screenshot from each game with a brief description. Nothing special, but you get what you ask for.

Very interesting. I was about to call his bluff because I checked all my old VG & CE mags and they all had unlicensed Tetris carts and boxes. But I don't have the particular issue that the above pic is in.
It almost makes me think that Tengen submitted that game for licensing earlier than I thought, inadvertantly opening the big N's eyes to this huge would-be blockbuster. Maybe NOA tried to buy the publishing rights from Tengen but were refused, bickering ensued, and the race was on to see who could put out Tetris the fastest behind the other company's back.
...or not, but it's fun to concoct wild speculations. :P

Just to put some sort of a limit on the time frame, I found an old VG&CE Dec. 1989 issue that's missing the outer few pages, including the cover (I'm pretty sure that the missing pages include a Tengen ad, but they're gone now). Near the end of the magazine, there's a 4-page ad for a Baltimore company named "Gamemania". On page two of this ad, there are eight Tengen games advertised, all with non-licensed boxes (no N seal): Xybots, Rolling Thunder, Super Sprint, Vindicators, Pac-Man, Police Academy, RBI Baseball, and Gauntlet. If there is a similar ad in the Feb. 1989 issue, I wonder if it shows boxes with the N seal?
