I like when developers used to give characters animations whenever they become inanimate.

Remember in the Sonic the Hedgehog when Sonic would stare at you and stamp his foot during periods of inactivity? http://www.planetdreamcast.com/sonic/see/clipart/sonic/cani/classic_waiting_transparent.gif In later games, he would lay down, cross his legs and rest his head in his hand, while Tails would stare you before yawning.

The best one I remember comes from Super Bonk on the SNES. If you let Bonk idle for a few seconds, he does some of the most amazing (and downright crazy)things. :D

For those of you that own GTA: San Andreas, you've probably seen CJ do a little dance while singing, "Rollercoaster! Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! Ooh!" after standing around for a bit. LOL Not to mention a bunch of other things.

What are some of your favorite character inanimations?

I like it when Mario goes to sleep.

Oh man, there are some great ones out there... I don't think I could list them all, but here are a couple of my favorites:

The original Bubsy for Genesis, if you stood around too long, Bubsy would bet impatient, just like Sonic. However, if you still waited a bit longer, he fould look staight at the screen, lean forward, and knock on it LOL

Sonic CD had another good one. Just like in the earlier games, Sonic would get bored, stomp his foot, and eventually lay down. If you continued waiting, he'd eventually say "I'm outta here!" and walk off the screen... giving you a Game Over.

One of the best ones I've seen tho was in Simon the Sorcerer 2. After Simon goes through a few bored animation, he slowly begins to age, growing a beard, long hair, the hair turning white, followed by his skin falling away to leave a skeleton, and the skeleton and his robe falling into a pile on the ground LOL

Captain Goodnight and the Islands of Fear
--If you stand still, he'll look left and right, shuffle around a bit and then take out a yo-yo.

earthworm jim had some cool idle animations, like him doing gun tricks, jumping rope with his worm body.

...pulling out a little dancing man. Then eating it.

If you move while he's holding it, he'll drop it and it'll run off. :D

In Comix Zone, Sketch'll take off his shoe and sniff it. I guess he's a little concerned about all that physical activity on such short notice: no time to slip in the Odor Eaters.

Well, just off the top of my head, in the Spyro's, if you do nothing, he'll stare back at you in a funny way, and eventually sit down and play with his horns.

In Symphony, the fairy will land on Alucard's shoulder, and if you move suddenly she'll fall off.

Or if you have the Japanese verison of Dracula X Nocturne in the Moonlight for PSX or Saturn...level up the fairy to about 50 (Much like the Devil Brother's Sword) and go into the "Confession" booth in the Royal Chapel...she'll sit on Alucard's shoulder while he sits in the chair...wait 5 minutes...and she'll sing an entire vocal verison of "Crystal Teardrops"

My favorite is when Mario falls asleep in Mario 64 and then he'll start talking in his sleep about pasta...

Maui Mallard or Ninja Maui or whatever it was called for SNES.

It showed the duck twirling the gun around, only to drop it and it went off while he flinched.

In Commander Keen, whenever he was still for a long period, he would sit down and read a book.

In 3-D Worldrunner, whenever the game was paused, the main hero (Mr. Worldrunner?) would sit down cross-legged and fall asleep, complete with sleep bubble.
