View Full Version : To Collect Greatest Hits or Not...

I knew I'd eventually come to this question, and I still haven't figured out what I'd like to do. I today picked up the original copies of Final Fantasy Tactics and Legend of Dragoon after already owning the Greatest Hits versions. So I now own duplicates of both games.
I wouldn't say that I was a variant collector, although I do plan to buy the fan art edition of Lunar, want both King's Fields and own multiple copies of the nes Zeldas. But in comparison to these the green barred GH games just seem so... bland.
Are they even even tempting enough to throw in my trade box? Or should I toss them up on ebay and recouperate my $15.
I know we've had GH topics in the past so I won't bother asking how these titles fit into your own collection libraries.
I try to resist collecting bulk. When tallying up my collection I err on the side of fewer games then more, I only count RPGs, I don't include duplicates. On the other hand for a complete PSX rpg collection- prehaps they're worth holding onto. Bah... or maybe I'm a pacrat. Dammit. Can't decide.

I have never seen this as an issue. I'm fine owning the greatest hit version of a game and not having the original and the other way around. As long as the game plays the same I'm good to have one copy. If you think the greatest hits are bland just get rid of them. Someone will trade for them or pick them up if you sell them.

think about it this way, the games are for you, and you only...
Thats how my collection is, I do not always have 50 US to fork for a game.

For me, its some sorta alternate cover or not at all (unless its uber cheap, or for some game series I love).
If its your only copy, keep it, but If you have two and could live without it, sell it :P

I'd say sell them and pick up another PS RPG you're looking to add into your collection. It's not like you couldn't pick up a used GH game anyday of the week if you're gonna' start getting into variant later. Besides, GH games have those ugly green spines that wouldn't look right in a complete collection.

im into variants...sadly. ive been seeing ps1 games so cheap i might as well buy both versions(or three or 9) just to have them all. but i collect variants of everything, so im not a great person to ask.

If I can I like to not get GH. If it's a rarer game, being a GH would bring the value down. I have them in my collection but am planning on trying to get the originals, even though it's sometimes really hard to find a non GH version. X_x

If a game got to GH status, its by no means rare, and never will be rare.
I like to go with original, but a GH version wont kill me to have.

I've never cared weather or not it's a greatest hits or not. So the box may be colored a bit different-it's not like most systems have any sort of scheme going with that. Hell for Dreamcast you have black and white, in addition to the orange, and probably a couple of variants too.
As long as it plays like it's supposed to, I'll grab it.

On a personal level, I only keep GH titles for variant collecting purposes - I think the green (depsite green being my fav color) is horribly ugly.
Neither FFT or Dragoon is worth a whole lot, so I'd either keep em as variants/backups or stick on a trade list. Probably not worth the trouble of eBaying.

While I do prefer the original cover art for either the PSone or PS2 over the GH versions it really doesnt matter to me.
I simply pick up whatever games Im interested in playing.
Sometimes I will pick up a "rare" PS2 game if I find one for cheap but other than that Greatest hits Logo even the green ones for PSX dont bother me as much as it seems to bother other gamers

While some view GH as a badge of shame, I've grown tolerant of their appearance in my collection. I just keep 'em separate (grouped together at the end of the stack) so a strip of green at the end of the PSX and a row of orange (still kinda cheese) at the end of the Dreamcast is visually acceptable. But I'd still take an original anyday, even if it means sacrificing the GHs.

I personally can't stand GH either, I'm into certain varients, but not psx greatest hits

Well I think it really boils down to the fact is it a game you want?
is it harder to find other than the original edition?
Preference does the Greatest hits bother me?
basically it's individual preference
I would always rather have the original copy than the greatest hits copy.

I try to stick with the original versions, but I'll pick up a Greatest Hits title every once and a while for variety.
I passed up a Tony Hawk 4 because it was greatest hits, man that font is ugly

As everyone's said, it's a personal preference. Some people can't stand the looks of a greatest hits game in their library...others, like me, don't give a hoot. If it's the same game, that's all I care about. Any GH game I bought when new obviously cost me less than when the game was brand new. I don't walk around staring at my shelves of games anyway...I almost get a chuckle out of the "I hate GH games!" guys...

If a game got to GH status, its by no means rare, and never will be rare.
Maybe not rare but value is another thing altogether. The difference in value between a factory sealed Final Fantasy VII greatest Hit edition and the non greatest hits version is quite different.

It seems most you you have missed the point entirely. The question's not should I keep a GH version instead of the original, the question is should I keep a GH version is addition to the original.

I'd buy the non greatest hits version of a game if I found it complete and in good condition even if I have the greatest hit version of that game.
I wouldn't however buy the greatest hits version if I already had the non greatest hits version of the same game.

I've collected a lot of different things over the years, and I have to say -- only collect things that make you happy.
I've tried collecting stuff as an investment and then regreted it after they ended up not being such a wise investment.
