well... waiting since the beginning of the year finally paid off last thursday morning.

First, a short story:

It all started back on Dec. 29th, 2004 ( I remember since it was a few days before new years eve) when I was with my parents on a country drive or so it seemed. We were about 20-25 miles from Eugene OR when we passed through Junction City OR and I spotted a rental store across from the goodwill. Needless to say the goodwill had absolutely smack, so I ventured across the street to the video store. The rental store was called Video Junction and had been in business since 1983 (but didn't start renting games it appeared until the late 80s, possibly 1987). Anyways...

I walked in, looked around a bit and noticed that there were TONS of video games. I counted (at the time) 100+ boxed NES games, 40 + boxed n64 games, 40+ SNES games and a slew of Genesis boxed games. The stuff wasn't mint, but i had felt I just walked into a goldmine. I almost shat myself from all the NES games lined up on the shelf.

Needless to say, i wanted them right then. I talked to the guy at the counter and it turns out they were closing because Hollywood just moved in down the street (bastard rental chains). I found out that his wife and him been in business since 1983... they had ove 15,000 Videos in their store and grip of games. He took down my number and said his wife would call me about the games.

Flash forward: Sometime in feb.
I hadn't heard from the lady, but had been watching the newspapers closely; low and behold i check the paper one morning and it reads "Video store closing." I call up, she says that she isn't ready to sell the games yet and won't be doing so for qutie a while. I still can't rest easy, so I make my way out to J-city and check out the sale just to make sure she isn't selling the sctuff. She isn't, just movies.

As it goes, she never calls me after the sale. I get nervious for fear she might ebay the whore. I am constantly checking ebay "distance nearest first," but no dice. So, I start to call her, remind her and discuss it with her every so often... She tells me she has over 1,000 games (which i later found out not to be true... it was closer to 500). and as the story unfolds, weeks go by, months go by... i continue to call, never getting answers at the store (since it is closed down). I begin to erase it from my mind, thinking it will never happen. Sometimes I talk with her and she tells me she still has them "but isn't ready to sell"

SO... last monday rolls around and I am making my weekly call to see if anyone answers. To my suprise, she does! She says that she is having another sale, with all the video games this next thursday. Extatic, yet a little pissed (since I had been talking with her for a long time about getting them), I couldn't wait to go out their thursday morning.

I look in the newspaper at 5:45 AM on thursday morning... BAM there it is, video store final closing sale... starts at 11, ends at 9... THURS-SUN

11 AM! I get there at 9:20. I wait around, being the only one there and end up getting in by 10:30. I go through the games and notice that she hasn't priced them all and seems to be going through them individually, pricing out each and everyone of her games, even the genesis sports titles. Her daughter is at home on the phone with her and they are discussing ebay prices. I think to myself "oh shit, no way am i going to get all these."

I wait around, talk with her for a bit and finally convice her husband that I have 1,000 bucks and will take everything... he is iffy about it, so I tell him he can still keep the ps1, ps2 and xbox games to sell (which were all scratched to shit), and i will take everythin n64 and below, + all of their empty boxes.

He talks it over with his wife and they bite.

Here is what I ended up with.
SNES:
58 boxed games
8 cart onlys
50 Empty boxes

N64:
58 boxed games
4 cart only
a box of instruction manuals that I haven't gone through yet
and 40 boxes only

Genesis:
60 boxed games
2 cart only
and 42 empty boxes

NES
161 boxed games (+3 trashed boxes for 3 other games)
12 cart only
57 empty game boxes

Grand total
366 games
197 empty boxes

Now, it appears that almost every boxed game for NES, SNES and N64 has all of their original inserts (well a few don't). The genesis games unfortunately do not. I got her box of n64 manuals, and she said she had the box of NES and SNES manuals laying around somewhere but couldn't put a finger on them. She took my number down again and said she would call when she stumbled upon them (yeah right... looks like i will be calling her in a few days as a reminder). She said if she fodun them I could just have the box full.

Anyways... here are the pictures of my big score. I might have spent a big chunk, but i definately feel it was well worth it.

nothing is really mint, but in good condition? yes. Some boxes have marker on them and that is unfortunate, but I figure I will be able to fill out my NES collection and make my money back :)

I'm impressed. The boxed games alone were probably worth the money. And just the boxes? The Ogre Battle, Dragon Warriors, Phantasy Stars, Shining Forces, Harvest Moon 64, and Paper Mario (to name a few) are worth their weight in green as well. Plus, it gives you stuff to look for to complete the collection!

Well, as a person that has bought out his fair share of video rental stores, I hate to say that you really didn't get that great of a deal.

You bought 366 games at 2.73 each. Then you have the boxes, which most rental stores will either give away to you or let you take for a quick 20.00

With that amount of games that you bought, and my personal experience with buying out rental stores, I wouldn't have spent over 400.00 for them all. The store has already made their money back on them, many many times over, plus they've had them on hand for over 15 years, and you have been calling them for about a year. 1.00 each sounds pretty fair considering the conditions.

I've personally never paid more than that per game when buying out rental stores, plus you didn't get anything really that rare AND an ass load of sports games.

Not saying you shouldn't be happy, because it's your money and I can tell you are ecstatic. I'm more ranting on the price that the video store charged you, they seemed pretty money hungry for a place that's going out of business and wanting to get rid of games they won't be able to do anything with.

Enjoy your games, if you feel that what you spent it worth it (and you obviously do), than enjoy the living hell out of them and don't pay attention to an old coot like me. :P

EDIT: Have fun cleaning the stickers/goo/marker and normal ex-rental marking off the games and boxes. Believe me, this is NOT fun at all.
