raptor, yeah, I put some in the Complete Game Boy/Game Boy Color/Game Boy Advance thread I started. Some of those are old pics, but you get the idea. It really is just shelves of games, I'm more of the library person but you can't visibly see every game on those shelves because I have fit as many as possible in there.

As far as completing stuff, I think everything that is up to date complete is in my signature. The ones I am trying to complete now are Xbox and GameCube, and I'm pretty close on those, and I'm trying to stay at least 70% up to date on Xbox 360, DS, and Wii, but it's hard to find cheaper decent condition newer titles these days.

DreamTR, since we are on the topic of completing system collections...how do you go about getting boxes and manuals? Like you've posted elsewhere finding the games is easy if you have the money to buy them...but boxes and manuals are slightly harder. Do you often have to rebuy another copy of the game?

And what do you do with all the duplicates you accumulate?

I would have to rebuy if needed, yes. I don't have many duplicates of anything from those collecting days, I would just sell the dupes on eBay mostly.

Hell, weight alone has to count for something.

Have close to 7,000 no where near being the max consider it middle of the road 250 are loose (mainly gameboy and nes games). It's pain in the ass trying to find the manuals and boxes for the loose ones. Hate to do the dupe thing to complete games but I guess I have to go that route. Any other ways around it?

Nope, not really. For me, the ultimate quest completing my N64 and Genesis has been a fun time, but at some point you have to buy dupes to complete CIB sets. I am like down to 9 manuals for Genesis and like 7 for the N64 for CIB sets. The ONLY way around this is to buy a CIB set outright....and fork down some serious cash. To me, that is not an option and personally, doesnt seem as fun. My genesis quest started almost 14 years ago, and sadly I have had to resort to buying dupes for last 50 or so purchases. Lucky for me, they arent too expensive yet.

I would say that 1000 old rentals from a video store are worth about as much as 1000 turds on your front lawn... not impressive at all, no matter how many video stores you bought out to reach your higher numbers

Seeing that video stores typically rented high-priced SNES RPG's, NES games that commonly go for $10 or more, N64 titles (i.e. Mario) that now sell for inflated prices on Ebay and uncommon PS1 titles, I guess the price of turd has gone up just like everything else.

My point is that the general assumption of "ex-rentals" is that they are always in poor condition or nothing but sports games. That isn't always true.

Is a guy who buys a bunch of "old rentals" (which I also do) that much different than the guy who cleans out the bin of 16-bit games at Game Crazy, sits up all night sniping huge lots on Ebay or buys large "lots" of games locally on Craigslist?

I agree with what you said bangtango. Alot of my Genesis games came from ex rentals, and were in pretty good shape. The ma and pa video stores of the past had some of the best stuff.

Well,i have to say i only colldct COMPLETE games...loose games are worth nothing compared to complete ones, generally 4-5 times less in value...even more if the game is factory sealed!

Then,it is easier AND Cheaper to get 1000 SNES games, than getting 100 CIB ones...

for me that is NOT the same thing at all! :)

That is how I see it aswell.

It's really easy to pick up random games by the box load for peanuts.

Going for complete games/ complete collections for a system is what I consider to be video game collecting proper.

But then there is collecting protos and unreleased games, where a box and manual doesnt matter and a collection of 10 protos/ unreleased games could be far more impressive than a collection 1000's of common retail games.

anyway, on topic.

I have maybe 1200 - 1300 games. I only actually 'collect' for the Master System though, and for that system I have 800. I'd struggle to contain much more. Some of you guys must have some really understanding girlfrinds/ boyfriends/ parents.

far from the biggest, I mostly collect complete games, but definitely collect on a limited budget. For a 32 year old with a newborn son and happy marriage, I am doing pretty good

I collect to have fun and have met some great people along the way.

Thats a pretty amazing collection. I really love that super long shelving with no breaks in it. I hope one day I have a big space like that for my collection.

I note that everything is boxed apart from the Game Gear collection, does that not annoy you? I would't be ble to cope. I know Game Gear boxes are fragile but they do look nice (apart from those crappy majesco things).

Far from biggest, but probably the biggest among the younger set on here. I have over 600 games and around 20-30 systems. I've lost count of my stuff as of late, but I am on my way to a complete Genesis collection and have just started DC, Saturn, Sega CD, 32x, and SMS. I am also collecting on a very limited budget, I try to not spend more than $5 on a game unless its something I really want as far as classic stuff goes. Next Gen stuff I pay whatever for.

Thanks for the kind words, as for going for a cart only Game Gear Set I do normally collect complete sets, but for the following reasons I went cart only

1. Way more Affordable. I missed the boat on getting boxed games cheap back in the day. I was too focused on getting my Sega Genesis US set.

2. I got 150 game gear games in one shot, when Game Crazy sold them for $1 ea when getting rid of them. They were all loose, so I decided to just keep adding loose carts when I found them.

3. I dont have the patience to track down all the game gear boxes. Tracking down my final 15 loose or so will be hard enough, but doable. At this point just getting the loose set done will be fine for me. It has taken my like 13 years to complete my Genesis set, I dont know if I have the patience to go that route for the game gear, although I am getting closer on my CIB Dreamcast set

These pics are going on six to nine months old, so I need to update them more.

I'm only 14.

Just this summer I stopped selling my games, except for duplicates, and started buying old games.

I have about 120 games, and 10-15 systems. Not too bad.

The last one I actually paid full price for was persona 3 fes, because I thought it was going to be hard to find. >_<

Oh, I didn't realize until someone said something. I'm 17.

I've been playing since I was 3(thats when I first beat SMB as well), and collecting came longer after that. I have the biggest collection in my school(well, i'm the only true collector there). So at over 600 games(give or take I suppose, I really must catalog it) and about 30 systems. Its not shabby.

There are Famicom games in the bedroom though. =)

I'd imagine many of the posters in this thread broke through 1k games.

I was at a few thousand and decided I didn't care for having so many games rotting on a shelf untouched for years at a time. I'd rather they go to someone who would appreciate them more.

I think my happy medium would be 300 or so games I'll play at least once every couple of years.

Mine's 800. I'm at around 600, not including Steam, but I've sold off probably 400-500 or so. I'm in the same boat as you, though. I don't need to own a game for the sake of owning it. I only own what I would at the very least conceivably enjoy playing.

Mine is at around 2500 or so, but it doesn't grow like it used to anymore, and when it does, it's usually imports. I've never sold games; my brother and some friends have inherited my duplicates. I don't pick up much of anything without the intent to really play it anymore, and generally speaking I'd rather pick up a new arcade pcb than 10 cheap games I'll rarely play. What I buy most often now are imports that are not thoroughly documented online, as I find I enjoy the surprise of not really knowing exactly what I'm getting into, and it's inexpensive. Getting ready to dig into the multi-player mode in this one as soon as my brother gets some spare time:

8293

Not many grails left for me now, just a handful of pcbs that cost a bunch but aren't really rare that I'm holding out for, and I'm not looking to complete collections... but it really is fun to stumble on something completely new to me on an old system or treat myself to an AES cart once in awhile.

I don't need to own a game for the sake of owning it. I only own what I would at the very least conceivably enjoy playing.

Ever since I joined backloggery.com, my approach to collecting has changed. I've focused far more on enjoying (and finishing) the games that I have rather than collecting games I won't play. I haven't bought a retro game in years and I've actively sought to sell games that a collector might enjoy possessing but that I as a player don't enjoy playing and never did (e.g., Super Hunchback for the Game Boy). I think I probably possess at present all the games that produce for me that glow of nostalgic memory that brings warmth as I recall the happier, simpler times in life when one could lose one's self in a Nintendo game for hours.

I've realized that the marginal value of an additional game in my collection is quite small, so it either has to be a very good game or be very cheap (and likely a combination of both) to acquire it. HumbleBundle.com and IndieRoyale.com are where I purchase most of my games now, and they're largely on Steam. After moving recently I have a greater appreciation for having fewer things to lug around.
