Last Saturday I was on the Games Convention in Leipzig. It was so great and big. Was the 3rd time I was there. This time I have play some more games as last time, which interesting me most and which I want to buy like The Legend of Zelda - Twilight Princess (GC), Castlevania - Curse of Darkness (PS2), Mario Kart DS (DS) and Castlevania - Dawn of Sorrow (DS).

The best from these for me was Castlevania - Dawn of Sorrow (DS). 8-)
I have completed the Demo once and it was so fun and good to play. The main game is near the same as Castlevania - Aria of Sorrow (GBA), so when you like the GBA game you will love the DS game. You can collect Souls (3 different colors), Weapons and Items from Enemies and fight Bosses.

New is the Seals system. You must first finish the Bosses and then seal them by drawing the seal one the touchscreen which you get somewhere else. First as I hear from this seal system I have think its a bad idea and will hard to do. But its not so hard as it sound. When you forget how the seal work, you can look into your Seal list. I have forget it by the second Boss and try 3 times. Then I have found it somewhere under the Itemlist, that you can watch it again. Then it has work and I have finish the second Boss too. When you do something wrong, the Boss will get some HP and you must hit him sometimes till you can seal him again. But I think he has not so much HP like in the beginning from the Boss fight.

This time you get too friends when you activate some souls, which you get from some enemies. One time I have a bat as friend who attacks too the enemies.

In the Demo was no ice yet, which you must destroy by touching the Touch Screen, what I have see in some trailers already.

The Demo contain 2 big rooms with some smaller ones and 2 Bosses. Not sure anymore, what the first Boss looks like, but the second one was the Puppet Master which I have see too in some trailers and / or pictures.

Can't wait till the game will release here in germany. This one will I buy as soon as this will out here. Who else will buy it.

I am left wondering... if that quote chain gets any smaller in the center would all those squished together text characters be so compacted that it forms a neutron star?
OMGWTFBBQ?!?!? O_O

The DS conspiracy continues.... I just noticed that my kitchen has Duel Sinks... scary. x_x

It's been a ritual for me to receive a video game for my birthday. With my day of birth falling into September that means the game I get is usually one I been waiting on for quite awhile. If your wanting to know precisely what day all I'll do is give a hint... my b-day was shared with Mortal Monday :) Yuppers thats the game I got that year. So I been dropping hints all friggin year about Castlevania DS coming out in September and how much I want the damn thing... but, I haven't actually sprung for a DS yet. :embarrassed: Oh well, I'll just have to sit on it untill I can go out and get one.

So, who else picked this up today?

I did and I'm loving it. I spent most of the day playing it and got pretty far. I love all of the options you have with the different souls, and being able to upgrade your weapons with them too. Also, I think they did a great job with the touch screen stuff...it blends nicely into the gameplay.

Definitely a must have title for the DS.

I picked up this game yesterday.

It's so short! But it was fun...

I ended up going through it in about 8 hours straight, non stop. It was kinda sad that it was over, at least I can go back to "Lost in Blue" and finish that up...

I went through it without a guide/online FAQs etc... and ended up getting 98% of the Castle completed(I know where the missing space is by looking at my map)... and 40% of the souls...

Way too easy IMO... but it's a great addition to the Castlevania series...

Next up, PS2 Castlevania!

Yeah, I'm having a lot of fun with the game as well. Great game, a lot of fun like Aria of Sorrow, and some nice new options. I like all the extra stuff that you can do with the game from the main menu. Well worthy of the Castlevania name. :)

I'm getting my copy tonight! :)

You won't be disappointed! :) I'm very much enjoying Dawn of Sorrow. The graphics alone are reason to play. The animation and attention to detail is for all to gaze at. The pseudo three-dimensional "animated/moving" backdrops, when used, offer a surprising level of depth and scale. All round, the presentation is top-notch. Dracula himself would be proud.

The music, too, is undeniably absorbing. The game freakishly combines a selection of eerie, addictive and funky sounds to create a stellar soundtrack. Everything feels spot-on, not least the sound effects. Once again, Dawn of Sorrow (as with Meteos) is a reminder that the DS' headphone socket isn’t simply there for the aesthetics.

The gameplay feels familiar to previous 2D games in the series… to an extent. Personally, I would argue that it feels far fresher than reviewers give it credit for. Regardless, I am truly engrossed, and would class this as a real highlight in the legacy that is Castlevania.

Another stunner for Nintendo's frontrunner! Play it.

I got the game Wednesday, and unfortunately , due to college and work, I have had very little free time to play it. I am only around 4.5 hourse in, but I am having so much fun with it. I think that the boss fights (well, the 8 I have faced so far) are better than any of the other "metroidvania" games. And I love that you can collect each soul more than once to upgrade them, I just wish they woul appear more often. At an rate, It is definitely one of the best DS games yet.

Avatard
10-07-2005, 01:11 PM
Yea, I got it the day of release. If you're gonna fly through it then yea, its gonna seem short. If you're gonna take your time and explore what all the game offers and collect the souls then its gonna have a ton of game play. So far my favorite soul are the mini devils, if you get 9 of them it turns into this little tiny succubus looking devil and owns. I love everything about this game except for one downfall, if you can even call it that, Hammer is a big wuss.

Also is it just me, or do punching weapons always suck in Castlevania games. I've imbued my punching weapon untill its the best it can be, the Kaiser Knuckle. That weapon sucks, its not even close to easier to get weapons.

Im a newbie to the GBA CV games, and I'm loving this one. I couldent imagine what it used to be like having to switch to the map all the time, the 2nd screen is so useful. I like the soul stuff, feels like pokemon kinda trying to catch all the souls. 3 star ones are a bit too rare though, but I guess that ads to the fun of getting them :)

Yeah, I found out later that would work as well but finally got the damn skeleton ark! I actually continued to fight ghost dancers for about 20 minutes and got 9 of their souls. So that's +18 luck. I've gotten some PAIN IN THE ASS souls after only a few tries, like the floating eye, skeleton farmer and valkyrie. The ghost dancer soul, soul eater ring, and three 7's armor just reeks in souls like crazy, I've maxed on a few enemies already just walking about.

For those of you that beat the game. Afterwards you get to play "JULIUS MODE" where you start the game off as Julius Belmont. Eventually with some exploring you meet up with Yoko Belnades(if you didn't know is related to Sypha from Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse), and you get to play with her, by pressing X you can switch between both characters who each have their own moveset and special attacks/stats.

The best part though is later on when meeting up with Genya Arikado, who if you've been paying attention is really Alucard(Also of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night), once meeting him you also get to control him throughout the castle. The best part about it though, it's not the suit version, it's the SOTN version(almost completely). I just wish you could equip weapons/use items like in the main game, but then again that'd be too good!

I also can't heap enough praise on this game.

To add on to what I said eariler, and what others have said -- the graphics, music, and gameplay are all top notch. The second screen is a godsend as you can have the map or status screen on at the same time.

Upgrading weapons with souls is a nice touch as are the abilities that you can use to attack.

I'm not crazy about the seal thing, but it's different at least -- just as long as I don't screw up drawing it on the screen after killing a tough boss! LOL

The story also seems pretty good, tied into the last game (Aria of Sorrow) with some new people and new things you can do.

Well worth the $35 the game goes for.

Finally, DoubleJump is going to have a guide for the game soon that has a lot of extra sutff in it, and a Castlevania comic book is coming out soon. :)

MarkMan

The Castlevania comic is already out, came out about 6 months ago... pretty good read.

Ah, no wonder. I'd rather just buy it all as one book, thanks. :)

I seem to be doing allright so far. Actually, I'm wondering if someone can give me a 'nudge' in the proper direction, as I'm not sure what the best thing to do is.

I have about 45% of the castle mapped. I have the double jump and crystal block removal abilities, as well as the doppleganger. I also have the dummy item -- the one that allows you to swap places with it after you throw it? Used that to acces some new areas.

I have three seals, have found the locked 'evil transport' door that Julius was at, and have also run into and briefed Alucard on the situation.

I'm aware of two bosses that I can fight at this point -- one if that strange creature ALL the way at the top of the tower, and you go crashing down to the bottom when he's been hurt enough, and the other is some kind of underwater eel that is hard to fight cause you're in the water.

I believe I can beat them, but they are QUITE hard and I'll have to slam down the potions in order to do so.

I also think I've explored as much of the castle as I can at this point -- I played around with the sliding puzzle so it was 'solved' and I could access the above rooms, have thrown the doll into all the small spaces, and figured out how to get past the 'bone' barriers. (Although I'm not sure how to open the low gate thingies, they block some areas.)

Is there some part of the castle I'm missing that I can get to? Or should I go fight one of the bosses? If so, which one first, and any hints with it?

MrSmiley381
10-07-2005, 09:38 PM
I fought the giant hulking thing first, explored the nearby tower, then fought water-face.

I GOT ALL THE ENDINGS TODAY EXCEPT IN JULIUS MODE. HURRAH.

The symbol drawing was bullshit a lot of the time though. The game tests you on how quickly you draw it as opposed to how accurately it's done. Perfect accuracy and slow is fail. Horrible accuracy and rushed is winner. WTF?

PDorr3
10-07-2005, 09:50 PM
Im basicaly up to where you are soul, I cant beat the boss all the way at the top, I will needm ore potions. Funny thing is, the sliding puzzle, when I hit reset it solved it for me, lmao. I cant figure out how to open tohe skeleton doors...I believe I only saw one of them. Also those bolt looking barricards/doors, Im guessing I can only open them up later.

Is there anything at this point in the game to help me find more souls? Like does luck improve my chances? (those dancing ghosts drop luck souls?)

Because some of these R3 monsters are a pain (I did get valkyrie today though)

SoulBlazer
10-07-2005, 10:03 PM
I've actually allready explored the tower -- I just need to decide if I missed something, or to go tackle one of the bosses somehow.

Oh, the skelton door -- just hit it with a bone. :) You know, the spirt that you get from a skelton so you can throw bones....

I'll have to mess around with the sliding puzzle some more also, I think.

About 'hulking thing' boss -- how did you beat him? The guy does MAJOR damage. Plus I'm not sure which target I should aim for first -- the head or the knee thing.

MrSmiley381
10-07-2005, 10:35 PM
I don't think it matters.

Tips:
Puppet soul can be used to dodge lasers if thrown properly.
Spears and the like tend to be more easily used against him.
Bring a ton of potions.

MarkMan
10-08-2005, 12:53 AM
So I've been messing around with this known glitch known as the Succubus glitch... it allows you to travel beyonds walls and basically gain more % of the map possible... (think sword brothers glitch from SOTN)...

Haven't had much luck...

People have found however, some items that aren't available normally in the game.

-hellvin-
10-08-2005, 01:06 AM
People have found however, some items that aren't available normally in the game.

Did they find them by traveling through the walls?

And speaking of items, is there anywhere with a list yet of where to find some of the items? I remember one guy talking about an armor called "Dracula's Tunic", but I never found it.

MarkMan
10-08-2005, 01:22 AM
Yes they found the items by travelling through walls.

You can get Dracula's Tunic by going back to the slide puzzle room, find the room with the mirror and use the Paranoia soul there.

the DS is really rockin it right now :) On the front page of DP right now there are 4 seperate threads for individual DS games. The DS seems to be loved by DPers and I don't think its any real surprise when there is a great 2D game like this on the system. I can't wait to go and get this. I'll probably be dropping around $95 this weekend as I pick up some of these great new DS games.

I haven't found any bosses hard so far. I'm always a really high lvl when I come across them because I try to collect souls and gain xp while I do it. Every boss is the same stratagy...GET 'EM!

Also the slide puzzle is a joke, I came and went as I pleased to any of the 3 solutions. Also each dead end in the actual puzzle pieces contains an item, but not are that great really.

One thing I haven't figured out is the piano room. Is there a song I'm supposed to play? I haven't seen anything mention it yet. I've played a C scale and it didn't work hahahaha.

Also I've gotten the Yeti and Mothman, they were pretty easy to figure out. However I haven't found the flying humanoid =P

He's at the very top level of the clock tower. A few rooms to the right of the warp point. You'll see something flying in the background. Use the mandragora soul, and it's scream will kill it instantly.

There's nothing special about the piano, it's just there as a bonus I guess.

Okay, can anyone give me a nudge in the right direction?

I've defeated the two bosses I found eariler, and the water boss gave me the ability to walk underwater.

That opened up some new areas, and I found a couple of weird things (a room with a cannon firing and then freezing, and a room full of spikes with no way to cross), but no new bosses, no encounters, no new seals.....

I'm sure I've checked the whole map and gone everywhere that I can go.

Could use a little help, not a spoiler, but some information, on where I'm susposed to go next?

Use the Zephyr soul in the cannon room.

For the room full of spokes... is it the one with the water?

If that's the one use either the Skeleton Ark soul or the Skeleton Ape soul + Puppet Master.

I don't have that soul -- where do I get it?

And no, the spiked room is not underwater. It's just a long passage with spikes. There's a safe spot to stand in the middle, but you are just left a narrow passage and no way to cross, as the floor is still spiked.

Did you get the bat company soul yet?

As for Zephyr soul you get it by defeating the boss after you get the tower key.

After fighting Gergoth, did you go back up the tower to get the key?

Soulblazer, check again. That room you described is the one where the spikes are underwater. In that room use the bone ark soul and they will carry you across it and , oddly enough, through the wall.

When you pass it use your peeping eye soul or you man miss a breakable wall farther in.

(sigh) Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by 'bat company' soul. I have the soul from the normal bats.

This is what happens when I try to finish one of these games without checking for help. LOL

Is Gergoth the name of that damn hard boss creature at the top of the tower? The one that crashes through the floor halfway through the battle and the two of you fall all the way down to the bottom?

Yes, I defeated him, but I did'nt see any need to climb back to the top of the tower since I had checked all the rooms up there. My map is'nt showing anywhere else to go.

But is is it worth it going back to that cannon freeze room? I'm trying to find the next boss to fight, or the next encounter with someone, or the next new area of the map to explore, or the forth magic seal.

EDIT: I just checked. I do NOT have either the Zephyer soul or the Skelaton Bone soul. I DO have both the Skleaton Ape and Puippet Master souls.

Don't assume you checked all the rooms. There is a room behind that guy but he has smashed all the floors. That makes it difficult to get up there. You have to keep working your way up by jumping and tossing those puppet master dolls. Sooner or later you'll make it to the top and find the key.

I think that key opens that strange blue door, but I dunno. I just kept chugging along couldn't tell if I actually used the key or not.

Yeah if you didn't go back up after defeating Gergoth then you haven't gotten the tower key which you need to gain access to new areas.

You don't have to use the puppet soul but it can help. I used the flying armor soul and made it back to the top just fine.

Oh yea, boy am I a retard. Using the puppet way was hard as balls.

Everyone keep your eyes peeled for something related to that piano. Maybe some notes listed somewhere or some clues. Its driving me crazy. I'm determined to figure out if something is up with it. The notes are "CDEFGABC", so if you see any combo of those random letters anywhere it could be a clue.

There's nothing with the piano, Igarashi confirmed it's just there for fun...

I guess that's the big secret about it :( !

Okay, I have been playing this game for the past three days now... if this weren't a portable and I didn't have school, I would have been playing it nonstop! And my eyes would look like gigantic white eggs with tiny little black dots for staring at the DS screen for so long. :eek 2:

Just finished beating the game my second time, this time in... well, I'll put up a SPOILER WARNING at this point...

Just beat Julius Mode, and it was much fun to play as the latest Belmont descendant, as well as Yoko Belnades with her good ol' fire, ice, and lightning spells that she inherited from her great great great great great great great granny. Oh, and playing as Alucard? Fuggin' wicked awesome. His sword is so damn fast, and he got me through some hard parts.

The final boss in Julius Mode is different from Menace... now, no one can complain about the game's lack of Dracula, because he's at the end of Julius' quest! Yup, Dracula took over Soma, and he uses some of the more powerful souls to kick your ass. He teleports about utilizing the uber-strong Great Axe Armor soul, and he hired Gaibon as his personal bodyguard. Every eight or so seconds, he'll dive towards you, and it WILL hurt. After kicking Soma's humanoid ass, he transforms into Dracula's final incarnation from Rondo of Blood! Looks exactly like him... so impressive. Goddamn, that was hard. I had to slide under his jumps and time it right so neither the multiple Larva nor the angel's feathers hit me. Didn't have to worry about the Aguni flame, though... but those locusts are pests. Thankfully, he gives you adequate warning to retreat to the corner of the screen before releasing the plague. It took me a while to beat Drac, but I did conquer him... at level 39. Not bad, not bad.

Okay, spoilers over.

Anyway, I must say that Dawn of Sorrow improves on Aria in every which way. I was surprised by quite a few of the boss fights, and I'm glad they've improved on the bosses, considering the somewhat lackluster fights in AoS. I was also surprised at this game's difficulty! It certainly is harder than AoS, and I didn't spend too much time out of my way leveling up. I did that on purpose. I didn't want to make the game too easy, I wanted it to be a challenge... geez, my wish was certainly granted. I must have died... like, 20 times. LOL

I was pissed when I screwed up the Magic Soul on the Zephyr fight and he killed me in resurrection. I was surprised, however, to hit the extremely complex seal for Death and Abaddon the first times I beat them. Like I said, the bosses are awesome. Hell, the enemies in general are awesome. Some may tout KCET for being lazy for re-using quite a few sprites from Symphony of the Night, but the Castlevania freak in me sees it as a homage to one of my favorite CV games of all time.

I do believe that this game will take Game of the Year 2005... but I have yet to play CV: Curse of Darkness, so I'll wait before I declare it an instant winner.

While it is IMO one of the best portable games out there, I don't think it will merit it to receive Game Of The Year on multiplatforms... maybe handheld game of the year for sure.

Will CV be 3D? If it is that it just can't stand up to DS =P

Also what does the soul release do? I've released some and nothing happened.

It's just for weakening souls if you want to make the game harder. That's it.

I need to get past there too. Is the skeleton ark soul the one where there are two skeletons carrying that bone head that shoots an energy ball?

I have the ape soul and puppet soul, how would this work instead? the ape soul only makes you throw and enemy furthur, and my puppet doesnt get too far.

Just try it for yourself.

Equip the Ape Skeleton Soul and the Puppet Master soul. Use the Bat Company soul once you get there, fly to the left, land on the safe area, then throw the puppet. Congrats. :)

Finally got 100% souls 100% map. Hard mode done. Julius mode done. Boss Rush record 2 minutes 23 seconds.

Whew. I think i'm officially done with this title.
