I guess that would have made him about 16 in 1958 - quite an accomplishment! :/

Actually, there was a scientist at a nuclear research facility- "Dr. Higgenbothem," or something like that (I'll look it up for next time) who created a Pong-like game on an oscilloscope in 1957. Since this was in a government facility, if he had patented it, the U.S. Government might have owned the rights to future videogames!

*sigh*

Let me once again mention this easy to follow time line:
http://www.digitpress.com/archives/arc00102.htm

By the way, were there ANY developments of note in 2002? GP32? Could be the first year in 30 years there was no real major development in gaming.

Oh, yes there was!

In 2002, newcoleco programmed Bejeweled for the ColecoVision. Opcode programmed a superb version of Space Invaders and its sequel for the ColecoVision.

So, in 2002, the oldest "ultra-popular" game and one of the newest on-line games both appeared on a classic console!

I think Rare, Nintendo's most important second party developer, moving from Nintendo to Microsoft is of note.

And why isn't there an entry for Sega's decision to leave the console manufacturing market and concentrate solely on making games?

Ehh... I guess they're "events", and if it's the best 2002 could do I suppose I can insert them. What a BLAH year.

What about Square and Enix merging? That was pretty big.

Duh Joe!!

Consoles went ONLINE in a big way in 2002.. for the first time in history all consoles can be connected to the net for online play.

The merger was announced but hasn't formally been done as of yet far as I know.

OK I added a few, but you gotta admit it's a pretty weak year!

PS Kaine, I thought the merger was final, unless all the game mags have reported misinformation.

You're telling me. 2002 will be combined with either 2001 or 2003 in the next edition of Phoenix.

Out of curiosity, Is there anything that would excite much beyond new console releases? Look at 1997 on your list - game.com was it?!? IMO the Sega news is much bigger than that.

Yeah. Game.com was it. And 1997 was the SECOND WORST year ever.

Things that I think are "events":
- any new gaming technology.
- any new game console release.
- a major company closing its doors.
- a major company opening its doors (these we won't really know until "hindsight" kicks in").
- a publication stops functioning (also see above, "starts functioning").

Actually the biggest story of 2002 NOW is that Leonard Herman isn't going to acknowlege it in Phoenix! See? I knew if we kept digging we'd hit a real event. :P

- any new gaming technology.

Does the eReader count? Not that I'm a huge fan of it or anything (I own 3 5 card games and I barely play them). But it was released last year, wasn't it? And it hasn't been done before, has it?

(I'm not trying to rescue 2002 from oblivion - just playing Devils Advocate I suppose).

Hmmm... maybe!

You know, like any other "new technology", let's see if it can be deemed a success before adding it to our history books. I mean, you don't see "U-Force Released" up there either, though at the time at least a few thousand people thought it was a great idea.

I like the e-Reader though. I hope it does become an event worth noting.

It looks like that article has been fixed... The only thing is that it says that Ralph Baer wrote his first game in 1967, blah blah... But he didn't really WRITE it since it was all discrete components, right? Oy...

Well, this is kinda old.....

But what about the GBA SP coming out in Japan in 2002? Or information released on what the 'next gen' systems from the Big Three are going to be?

2002 the year 72 pin nes connectors outsold gamecubes.....

It's interesting because 2002 was a huge year for PAL territories with the introduction of two next-gen consoles! Xbox in March and GameCube in May. 2001 was the real drought for us, with only the GBA being released.

Well I guess this post of mine from 2003 was wrong. Both 2002 and 2003 are independent chapters in Phoenix 4.

Is there any situation that Altered Beast can't make better?
Only if it involves actually playing it.
