Yep, it's getting old. Time to put the POSX down. I wish it had never been released.

Innovation stifling. Flash over substance. Glitz over gameplay.

Don't fool yourself. Console companies have had a huge influence on developers the entire time.

Did the quality of Konami games fall on it's own. What the hell happened to some of the other companies. It like they sank into nothingness (Technosoft? Naxat? hello!? what the hell?)

It's time for the monopolistic reign of terror to end. It's been ten years too long.

BTW. I did have a PSX for some time. It had RPGs. That seemed like enough before I started wanting to play any other damn thing.

I didnt get a playstation till 1998 (or early 1999), but I remember seeing one in action at a friends birthday. His brother had just bought one and we were all playing Ridge Racer and Destruction Derby. I was in complete awe and very pleased when we got one a few years later.
To this day its the console ive spent the most time playing (Mega Drive and PS2 are tied for second).

My personal favourite playstation games would have to be the Gran Turismos, Syphon Filters, Ace Combats (except 3 which was awful) and any Namco game.

edit: Add Darkstalkers, Sonic Wings Special, Vib Ribbon, Porsche Challenge, Mr Driller, Army Men 3d (i liked it),NFS: HS, Pong and Medal of Honor. I could go all day like this :)

A great system, i first got one in 99 some time. My cousin let me borrow it (I still have it) and I really enjoyed it. I mostly play it for the RPGS but I think I'm running out of fun games to play on it.

Yeah, I have had some great memories and times with my PlayStation. Silhouette Mirage, the LUNAR games, numerous other RPGs, Incredible Crisis, Einhander, RC de GO!, Alundra, R4: Ridge Racer Type 4, Metal Gear Solid, Ape Escape, and of course, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I must have played through SotN at least a half dozen times by now. :D

I didn't get a Playstation until around Halloween of '99, and I think from that point through late 2001, early 2002, I was snapping up at least one game for it every month. To put that in perspective, prior to that I had done all of my gaming on the PC or, before that, the Apple II or original Game Boy. I had given up on console gaming because to me - and I really still feel this way about huge chunks of the 16 bit era - everything seemed to be boiled down to 7-10 distinctly defined categories, few if any of which held any interest for me. (To me, the innovation was stifled long before Sony enterted the picture.) By getting into the PSX late, I had a nice smorgasbord of new games laid out before me - some of that machine's "twilight games" were among its best, and some of those still rank among my favorites. And the imports! Wow. The Japanese retro collections. Beautiful stuff. And the PSone with the LCD screen: perfect.

The Playstation dragged me out of the vintage console gamer closet and reintroduced me to being a gamer, period. Without the PS1 to shake me out of my vintage gaming elistism (which I readily admit I was suffering at the time), I might never have discovered the pleasures of more recent, post-PS1 games like the Rogue Squadron series or Katamari Damacy. It had the most diverse library since, at least in my opinion, the NES, and it may still be the most diverse library we've seen since then. I heart my PS1. It taught me that it was okay to like modern games, and that there was nothing intrinsically wrong with them. And it played a lot of old favorites as well.

It's really one of my all-time favorite consoles.

Oh my god. I am getting so old. I remember when it came out; me and my buddy thought it was the best gaming was ever going to get. I can't believe we thought that. :embarrassed: .
I'm going to crack out the old Twisted Metal 2 and give 'er a play on this special day.

Goddamn, never expected so many negative comments in here. :/

Anyways, the Playstation (and even moreso when the PS2 library is added) is my favorite system of all time. It had just about everything I could ask for (Save for some 2D fighters which I picked up for Saturn).

I think I own almost 200 games, and I can still think of about 50 more that i'd like to purchase.

When did I get a Playstation? Maybe.... 97? It was a gift, I remember it being around $200 at the time. I would play the system every damn day.

Some of the games that came with the system when it was purchased...

Tekken 2
Tobal #1
Loaded
Resident Evil

All classics, and games that i'll always come back to for a nice shot of nostalga.

The Playstation was the first big console for me. I owned everything back to an NES, but Playstation was when I was gaming like crazy. RPG's started coming out like crazy. Final Fantasy VII, Suikoden, Wild Arms LUNAR. Survival Horror impressed me with greats such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill , and even puzzle games started to interest me, such as Puzzle Fighter and IQ.

I will agree with the lack of 2D, as I love shooters and 2D fighters. But Playstation never lacked other great games.

My first playstation came and went. But I'll always keep my replacement that I kept for 6 months before the PS2.

I don't think I need to say anything as far as I'm concerned with PSX. :)

Also...about "Killing 2D"...

Seeing how Sony bought the exlcusive US distribution rights for King of Fighters 95 and (even repaired) Samurai Shodown III, had the better version of Street Fighter Alpha 1, got Mortal Kombat 3 all by themselves in the 32 bit systems, launched with Raiden Project, and damn near a ton of other stuff, the PlayStation was a fine, supportive 2D System.

However, when Sony realized that Saturn had the better 2D stuff (all future Capcom fighters, Guardian Heroes, etc), they then pushed for 3D because they knew who were going to be their breadwinners; the mainstream looking for the next best, most realistic thing; 3D. Even with them pushing 3D, you still got awesome 2D games like Street Fighter Alpha 3, Castlevania SOTN, and more.

Secondly, the Launch Years Sony crew was very different from the later years Sony staff, and the current Sony is an absolute beast that can not be killed but needs to be.

If you're going to dance on anyones graves, dance on the current staff's. Leave the original crew alone.

Happy Anniversary PlayStation!

I recieved my PlayStation in December of 1998. It was my 15th birthday and I'd pleaded for one ever since renting Breath of Fire 3 at my brother's house. I may not appreciate the effect the system had over the industry but as far as systems go I love it. Afteral it's my most heavily collected for system.

I <3 teh Sony

Chock me up to another one who shouldnt need to explain a post in here. I still think that its pretty spiffy that at 10 years, the system produced games for 9years 1month and 4days before they trickled to an end commercially. The system like any has its ups and downs, and due to its popularity and massive number of games released (just about 1300) did have its fair share of crap. But remember what it did for the current industry. It made gaming cool. No longer did it come across as a 'kid' thing, but when kids, pre-teens, teens, young adults, adults, grandparents and every other 'group' of people could easily go into that library and find a good half dozen+ games to play. It was made.

Yes it did lead to the evolution of the beast that the industry is today, but hey, its a birthday. Lets celebrate!

Jeez, I thought I was one of a very few who got started "late" (1999 or 2000) on the PS.

The last system I'd bought was the Jaguar, & I told myself I should stop. A guy at work got one as a gift w/ a NASCAR game (99?) & he didnt want it- guess he thought it was a "toy" or something. Anyhoo, I offered to buy it for $100, & I've never looked back. I traded the NASCAR game w/ another co-worker for Activision Classics, & ran out & got Resident Evil: DC & Diablo to see what the fuss was all about (!!!)

That's right, I didnt know anything about Resident Evil at the time.

SO I'm playing along, & said to myself, "What's so scary about THIS???" That's when the dog jumped through the hall window. From then on, I was hooked.

I told myself I'd buy a handful or so of games- a few arcade titles, & a golf, baseball, & hockey game, maybe some racing games (I'm not into NASCAR).

Right now, my PS game collection is at 50+ & counting, not including games I've traded away after beating/selling them to buy OTHER games!

Happy birthday, PlayStation. I'm glad we met. :D

I remember getting the PSX pretty soon after launch ... at the time, Ridge Racer and Destruction Derby were just mind boggling. Another kid in my neighborhood had Toshinden, Gameday, and Twisted Metal, and we would play those all of the time. I remember in Gameday every time you made a big hit on a player there would be a lightning/thunderstorm effect. I also remember the key to that game was hitting the wide receiver/tight end/running back immediately after they caught the ball and it would squirt out every time.

Then the RPG wave hit, and I was really hooked. I remember buying Beyond the Beyond the first day it came out and completely hating it. Thankfully, things got a lot better from then on out.

Tomb Raider was another revelation for me. God I loved that game. I used to get a kick out of climbing to the absolute highest point and making Lara do a dive off of it. I did this many times, sadly enough.

But the best was Castlevania, which is still my favorite game to this day.

I loved the PSX ... still do, always will.

my gaming hiatus was in the beginning of the PSX/Saturn era. i wasnt going to spend 400 on any video game machine, so i bought a 32X instead, and while i enjoyed a handful of games on it, support for it, and the genesis dried up, so i stopped playing video games for the most part.

i did buy a PSX around xmas of 97 with Final Fantasy VII. this was still technically the early period for the PSX i guess, but i only had a handful of games. it wasnt until the dreamcast was launched a couple of years later that i really started to get into gaming again.

and now with the new wave looking to cost 400+ once again, it looks like i will sit out again. it will take a humongous leap like FFVII was (in the day it was impresive, though it was a lot of smoke and mirrors) and a price drop or two to jump back into things.

I never actually had one, but my friend bought one on Launch (or within a month after). I remember playing Gameday 1995, and Eddie George was unstopable! Running down the sideline and hitting people with the stiff arm was deadly! Twisted Metal was also pretty damn sick for the time.

In 1995, I hadn't owned a true console since the Atari 2600 in 1985 or so. I hadn't played a console game since "A Boy and His Blob" on the NES in 1990. (and I had only played two NES games.)

I was a PC gamer through and through, and then I saw Battle Arena Toshinden. For $15 I rented a Playstation console for a weekend and played Battle Arena Toshinden for most of it. Returned the Playstation and that was it.

In 1999 I saw the demo/opening video for Final Fantasy VIII and decided I had to play it, but only after playing FF1 through 7. I played all the way up to six via emulation and in the Fall of 2000 decided it was time to get a PSX.

I got me a brand new dual shock for $130 or so bucks and have enjoyed it ever since. The system practically taught my son how to read, as he's played Chrono Trigger on it since he was four years old.

However, on my current HDTV it looks like crap. I honestly prefer to use a PSX emulator output to my TV with a PSX controller USB connector. Someday, I'll get a RGB monitor and an av cable mod and play it with one of those.

Happy B-Day Playstation.

Awww 1995, I was 6 LOL

Needless to say I didn't have a PlayStation in the early years of the system, but I was able to play it at a couple friends houses and at my uncles place.

I still think the early years of the PlayStation were by far the best('95 through '97). After that it was down hill, but still those years alone are what made the system for me.

-Tekken
-Twisted Metal
-Twisted Metal 2
-Ridge Racer
-Destruction Derby
-War Hawk
-Die Hard Trilogy
-Loaded
-Fade to Black
-Zero Divide
-Crash Bandicoot

And countless others, sure some of them are kind of lame but I enjoy and have enjoyed playing all of them(and others). The early stuff was just gold, I like to call it the "pre 989 period".

I've probably spent a few hundred hours on Twisted Metal 1 and 2 alone playing multiplayer with friends and stuff.

Happy 10th Birthday PlayStation!

I've had countless memories with this system and hopefully many more to come. :) I got the system with FF8 and thats still my favorite game on the PSX. And the best of the "later" years. In My Opinion.

Some of my favorite PlayStation titles...

-Twisted Metal
-Twisted Metal 2
-Metal Gear Solid
-FF7
-FF8
-GTA
-Tekken 3
-Gran Turismo 2
-THPS2

Just to name a few.

Now I must go play some of the PSX classics for this special day(as well as Dreamcast cause today marks the 6th B-Day for it also :P )

My first experience playing a PSX was at Best Buy with a "Twisted Metal" demo (the first game).

But owning,i was a late bloomer....I didn't get a PSX until like 2001/2002.

Screw all this anti-PSX, sad for 2D talk....it doesn't get any sweeter than outrunning the cops in "Need for Speed: High Stakes".

That game wouldn't be near as fun if it was 2D. :shameful:

i will dance on its grave. damn, you playstation! damn you to hell for killing 2D.

Actually, companies put out games, and depending on what sells, companies continue to make certain types of games and discontinue others. Companies made 3D games, and gamers bought them. You're a gamer, so technically YOU killed 2D games, ya bastard. I hope you're happy.

---

I got my first Playstation in the winter of 1996. In the fall of that year I took a job in Spokane, Washington, some 1,800 miles away from home. I was lonely, I was homesick, and I was bored. For Christmas that year, my dad sent me a Playstation, which kind of became our salvation during that time. I remember playing a lot of Destruction Derby and that awful Star Wars fighting game and of course Tekken. Those are the early titles that stand out in my mind.

Looking around me in my gaming room right now, I've got three untested PSX units sitting on the shelf next to me, two PSX's (one modded, the other a blue debug unit) both hooked up on my wall o' consoles, and I know I've got at least one more modded one downstairs and another untested one out in the garage.

Sure, compared to today's graphics, the 3D back then was pretty awful, but there were a LOT of good PSX games. I remember walking into game rental stores back then and always finding something new and good to play.

I got my PSX the week it launched in U.S. the first games I had for it was Toshinden and Streetfighter:the movie  not a great start but I did enjoy Toshinden at the time.

Then came Ridge Racer,Tekken, Warhawk etc. great games and thats what matters.

I dont care for the system itself much but theres no denying the sheer number of great games and RPGs that it provided.

I still play Metal Gear Solid , Silent Hill 1, and Wipeout XL on my PS2 to this day ;) in fact I just picked up Final Fantasy Origins for PSone last week.

There I gave credit were credit is due now back to playing Code Veronica on my DC

The playstation gave me Chrono Cross, vib ribbon, Metal Gear Solid, Azure Dreams, Suikoden 1 & 2, R-Type Delta, and myriads of other grade-A titles.

I still prefer the N64, but there's no denying the quality that lies on the PS1.

My first introduction to the Playstation didn't come until I bought a PS2. It was a big ticket item and of course, new games for it were pricey too. Because it played the older Playstation games, I often found myself picking up a couple of those instead of maybe just one of the PS2 games. Heck, I was finding them all over the place for just a buck or two. Seemed like a pretty good deal to me! Naturally, knowing absolutely nothing about Playstation games, whenever I was afforded a choice between a greatest hits version or the original release version, I would ALWAYS choose the GH! Hell, what did I know! The greatest hits sounded like the premo version to me! I don't consider myself a serious collector in any fashion, but since I've found this hobby, I doubt I've ever been afforded a decision early on in the process that I didn't naturally gravitate to making rather dumb one. But now that I look back on it, picking up Playstation games was a decision I've never come to regret.

Any games I've played with my kids are the ones I remember best, and the many battles with my son in Hogs of War will forever remain some of my fondest memories. Metal Gear and Resident Evil are franchises the Playstation introduced me to and I have avidly followed ever since. Not to mention the series that just seemed to belong to the Playstation: the Crash Bandicoots, Gex's, Spyro's and Tomb Raiders. There's RPG's out the wazoo and throwing shmups into 3D hasn't been as bad as some would like to make it out to be.

To this day, I just can't seem to pass up a chance to pick up a Playstation game if it's not a sports game and I see it for a buck or two. It's been kind of addicting. It's changed a little since I found the DP guide and I was introduced to R numbers and such. I make much more informed purchases, including some that I'll admit, have cost me more than a buck or two. I've come to crave long box versions and I'm even dabbling into some imports. There's still about 170 specific titles that I would like to have some day. After that, who know's. I'm beginning to wonder if I could ever really stop!

Just to show you how far this system can get under your skin and entice you to complete and utter madness, I'll admit to bizarrely collecting Playstation memory cards. Any time I can find a brand or color I don't have, I just have to have it. I have no reason why! No wait, I do know why, they're only a buck or two, THAT'S WHY. LOL

Happy Birthday Playstation! Some of my Playstation insanity, on display...

The first time I played a Playstation was at Toys R Us. I played the in-store demo of Ridge Racer. It looked nice, but I didn't like it very much.

I got mine not on launch day, but in the same year. I put 100 bucks, my brother another 100 bucks and our parents the remaining 100 bucks. I remember went to EB with so much joy but had to wait over an hour to get out of the mall because of the rain, it was like a storm out there! Finally went back home and plugged it and put Ridge Racer and a friend lend me some titles, like Tekken, Wrestlemania and Battle Arena TohShinden. Then began importing titles like Akumajou Dracula and others. It is a great system, changed the course we had about games, some games made history, like FFVII Castlevania and Metal Gear Solid. A great day, and a great system, happy birthday Playstation!

I thought the PSX launched on 9/15/95. Meh, it doesn't matter.

My PSX adventure started in January of 1997. 4 short months after I bought my N64 at launch. I mean I needed something to play. I had conquered Mario 64. I didn't want to try Pilotwings 64 because I wasn't a huge fan of the SNES original (mistake). Wave Race 64 just didn't appeal to me (I was wrong). And I had no intrest at all in Shadows of the Empire. What else was there? Nothing on 64, but the PSX sure was looking promissing. So I scraped up the $200 and my Dad reluctanly gave me $10 for the tax. I played that included Demo Disc over and over for a month until I could afford a game. So "Happy Birthday" PSX and thanks for Ridge Racer, Castlevania: SotN and Klonoa: Phantomile in the Wind!

I got my first PSX back in late '96/early '97 (used) with Gex and Midway Arcade Classics.

Soon afterwards, I discovered Persona and Wild Arms, which are still my favorite PSX RPGs.

I remember getting FF7 on release day and playing through it. Sure the CGI was impressive, but I still feel it wasn't that good of a game... I also discovered Castlevania SOTN on accident, and it quickly became my #1 favorite PSX game.

About late 1998, I discovered the joy of imports. My first import, which I still have to this day, was Captain Tusbasa: Get in the Tomorrow. Soon afterwards, I bought the japanese version of Chocobo's Dungeon 2 off of ebay. Included with that was a demo disk that housed a game called IS: Internal Section. After playing the demo, I was hooked and bought the game soon afterwards. If you like N20, Tempest, and/or Rez, you NEED this game. Plus I feel it is Squaresoft's best PSX game.

I also bought Final Fantasy Collection, way before the U.S. versions (FF Anthology and Chronicles) of the games were even mentioned. Seeing Cecil run on the maps of FF4 was a definite highlight for me.

Happy 10th to the PSX!

eh, Top Shop is one of the greatest games of all time

I don't know if I can fully agree with that statement, but when I bought it I did play it for something like 6 hours straight... LOL

Ahh, the Playstation. When it first came out I was singing songs of praise for the Saturn, as I didn't trust Sony to make a console that was actually worth a damn. I was the dumb kid telling his friends "No, Sony can't make a system, they're just going to ruin it."

And the first time I played one at a kiosk at the Good Guys, I was NOT impressed. Even back then, my mind was thinking "tech demo" and I wasn't interested. But apparently I held my tongue around my dad, because it was he that bought me my brand-spankin' new PS-X. And I loved it. Played 1Extreme and Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee for such a long time, and I finally was forced to concede.

This was a good system.

Great games overall, a beautiful library, good for both the single player and groups of people, the controller was well done, even the price of new games when I finally got my PS-X were nice ($30 for a new game? I could probably afford that...). It was a fine console, and just for that I'm going to play it right now.

Top Shop and 1Extreme, here I come!

My initial thoughts were that sony's success in TV and electronic sales had gone to their heads and that they did not have the experience to compete with giants such as sega and nintendo. I also thought that people were insane for importing psx consoles from japan for $700+.

When I finally saw and played the psx for myself I was completely blown away. Being a huge fan of the saturn I soon realised that seemingly all of the debut games on the psx were a cut above the sega equivalent. For instance, battle arena toshinden was graphically, much more advanced than the flat, overly simple polygon fighter that was virtua fighter. Additionally ridge racer was a much more serious game than daytona usa. Oh yeah and rayman kicked serious ass.

One thing that wasn't so nice about the psx was the initial build quality I remember seeing the first generation psx consoles turned upside down at a number of video game retailers. The faulty laser problem also seems to have occurred with early versions of the playstation two.

Okay, everyone rips on the sports games but I remember picking up the box for In the Zone and thinking how amazing the graphics were. Then I played it with the multitap and four friends and I have to admit that I was in total awe of how huge the players were and how great the camera system was. I thought konami really did a great job with that game especially being a first generation game. Oh, I played the hell out of that game and even though it was really easy to block shots it was fun to listen to people bitch about not being able to get a shot off. This was my defining moment for what the psx was and in my opinion it accomplished the biggest leap from one generation to another. I mean from atari to nes and nes to snes there was big leaps but nothing like going to full 3d. I know a lot of people here like to hate on 3d but come on, we all know that if done right, 3d games amazed us when we first saw them,
