For everyone that is saying that Nintendo doesn't need to make games that have mature themes because they are working on a different set of gamers, fine. I agree.
But to say that isn't why they are in dead last place? I disagree.
I've been reading Dungeons and Dreamers lately, and in a chapter talking about video game violence and the media, it has someone (I forget who right now, the book isn't near me) say something to the affect of:
"As kids get older need games that they can sit inside and feel manly about playing instead of going outside and rough-housing. Many violent games are extensions of the childhood fantasys that children normally play out. The difference is that because this is happening indoors on the TV, many people -- especially moms and women who aren't used to these sorts of fantasys -- are surprised by it, although most kids that age wouldn't be."
So... Sure, Nintendo has made games that are accessible by everyone, but if you're some sort of "cool dude" in middle school, it sounds neater if you're playing GTA:SA (AKA "Cops and Robbers") than if you're playing Mario Party or Pikmin. Sure, those games may be fun and damn fine games, but they simply don't do it for a HUGE part of the population.
Yes, Nintendo makes money. But Nintendo makes money because they have been able to convince enough people to buy their systems with the expectation of other games. I doubt strongly that we'll be seeing the same sorts of sales on the next Nintendo system if they don't drastically change their ways. If they don't, they will lose more market-share, which will mean that they won't actually be making money in the home console business anymore.
Yes, Microsoft and Sony blow more money in promotions. But the potential to make money is SO much greater when sitting in their position. The risk outweighs the reward. Nintendo right now is going for the reward now, which makes them have a great risk for the future.
And now, the horse is officially dead. I'm done with Nintendo topics for a while, I think.

I'm glad smokehouse pointed out that the GameCube isn't exactly a Madden player's system. While it does reflect Nintendo's share of the market to some extent, one also has to consider that GameCube owner's KNOW what they got a GameCube for and it sure as hell ain't Madden. Besides kids, most GameCube owners are more "hardcore" gamers who want to play the franchises they grew up with, play innovative titles (not necessarily the millionth Mario Party, but there is still plenty of innovation to be found), play some Japanese titles instead of mainstream US-made games, etc. I would guess that a lot of GameCube owners are serious enough about games to own more than one current generation console, so who's to say they're not buying Madden on XBox considering it should look better on that system and all? It's no insult to Nintendo. They'll get sales from their exclusive titles.
What I find ironic is that Madden on GameCube is probably better than Madden on PS2, like most multi-platform games. Of course, if you asked me, I'd say Madden sucks on every console. :P

Zach's right. We really shouldn't threadcrap like this. Kittens are pretty immature reaction to a heated debate. And in this kind of debate, where certain combatants refuse to agree to disagree, kittens just aren't appropriate.

Exactly. Are these just gross sales? Are they profits? Stop talking like the Gamecube is dead already.
Not to be a curmudgeon, but in my opinion the GC died a long time ago, unless you're a fan of childrens games like Pokemon or Pikmin and very poorly done nintendo franchise reincarnations.
Listen here, I'll give it to you on Pokemon but, Pikmin is not a kids game! Child-friendly does NOT mean Child-exclusive. How many first gen games for any system is A-list or killer app status hmm? Last one I recall was Soul Calibur on the DC... and that was '99.

First off, I think this thread is rather civil. There’s not much name calling garbage going on in this one so there’s no real reason fro the mods to lock it. Second, to all the +1 posters who come on here and keep asking “Why does this topic keep coming up?”, why not go somewhere else? You don’t have to click on the link you know.
Anyway, back on topic. I consider the GC to be a solid secondary system. If you have a PS2 or an Xbox (as many do), also owning a GC is a nice backup system. Not that I’m for either of the two but the Xbox and PS2 are rather similar and save a few exclusive titles on each one, they also share a lot in common. The GC however is much different AND much cheaper. I saw a bundle the other day that includes the system, an extra controller, Smash Brothers mele and one other game (I can’t remember which one it was but it was a decent title) for $99! All that for $100 is a steal! Why not pick one up.

I understand what you're saying, but the problem is that your line of reasoning could be used to defend any behavior on the boards. Spam, re-hashed topics, flamewars etc. You could always just say "if you don't like it, don't read it". But then the boards get gunked up.

Likewise, people don't have to start new topics flogging the same dead horses, so it's a chicken or the egg type dilemma at this point. Alternately, people can just ignore the +1 posters, can't they? Why does the burden have to be on those of us who are sick of seeing fanboy crap clogging the board to turn a blind eye?

Well said. Although the last first gen killer app was Halo, not Soul Cal (although Soul Cal is a better game in my opinion). You don't have to like that fact, but it's true.
As for your comment about childrens games you are absolutely right. Look at how many child freindly games we collectors love. Like one of my favorites Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
It a game about a fast woodland creature and his two-tailed fox pal Miles trying to save their homeland from the evil Dr. Eggman (or Dr. R whatever you prefer). Kiddie oriented? Yes, but it's one of the finest games ever made IMO and it's one i'll always be able to just sit down and play. Now look at new Sonic games, and i mean real sonic games none of this shadow crap. They're the same premise but they still draw in a decent audience and aren't viewed as kiddie crap (even though they aren't the best). The same is true for Pikmin.
I know it's odd to use a sega example in a Nintendo thread, but i just love Sonic 2 so i bring it up when i can get a chance.

The problem is that these threads are getting derailed by the fanboys and the haters.
The TOPIC thread was simple enough -- posting recent sales figures on best selling games to show the GC is solidly in third place and on the way out.
Just like the last locked thread was started with the intent of asking a serious question, on when we realized Sony was going to be number one in the industry.
But due to the pro-Nintendo anti-Sony bias here in these boards, I could see it would'nt take long before both of the threads got derailed into a massive train wreck.
Tragic, really. I come here to talk about games, not hear people whine about one rich controling company doing better then another rich controling company, neither of which gives a rats ass about you. :/

I don't think that the boards are necessarily super pro-Sony / anti-Nintendo, but I do feel that since most of us here are pretty mature when it comes to the games we play -- AKA if I say that I'm playing Pikmin and loving it, people don't look at me like I came from the moon -- I think that it makes people recognize that underneath the kiddy graphics, Nintendo makes some great games.
I think that because of that, people are more willing to "root" for Nintendo on these boards because they're shown as such underdogs, while people here view their games as some of the best.

I'd say it's about time you shut up and just got back on topic and stopped doing this :deadhorse: before you lead to more of this :2gunfire: :rockets: :deadhorse:.
-------------------------------------
Now on topic, as everything should be. I found this Xbox, PS2, GC comparision guide (http://nintendo.about.com/od/editorials/a/systemcompare.htm) on about.com and i find there conclusions rather amusing (yes it's pretty damn old):
Conclusions:
It’s time to revisit that original question, “What system is right for me?” You can go over the information above, decide what’s important to you, and then make a choice on your own, but to make it simpler I’m going to make one or two recommendations, based on a few key facts:
1. The experience you will get from either the Xbox or the PS2 are virtually interchangeable. While they vary slightly in games, they tend to have the same style of content.
2. The GameCube is the system with the most consistently unique content. You’ll be able to experience things on the GameCube that you simply won’t be able to on the PS2 or Xbox.
3. If you’re interested in more kid-friendly, lighter games, the GameCube is the way to go.
4. The Xbox has the best online and hardware support.
Based on these four points, I’d say that the Xbox and the GameCube are equally viable options. Arguments could be made for either system, depending on how you approach gaming, and what sort of games you enjoy. Since the Xbox and PS2 offer a similar style of games, but the Xbox has greater online play ability and a hard drive, I’d recommend it over the PS2. In other words, in my opinion either the Xbox or the GameCube are the way to go. No one can claim to be experiencing the full breadth of what games have to offer without owning a GameCube, and no one can claim to be experiencing the full breadth of online play without owning an Xbox. Even though it has the greatest market share, the PS2 has a limited indispensability.
My final recommendation would be this: compare About.com’s top-ten game lists for each system, found here for the GameCube, here for the Xbox, and here for the PS2. Go through the lists, figure out which system has the most games that you’re interested in playing, and let that influence you heavily. In the end, the games you play are the only deciding factor.
--------------------------
What i find so interesting is that they seem to just love the GC. They praise it for it's uniqueness and overplay the kiddie angle, but they still chose it over a PS2 and no one seems to do that anymore. It just mad me start wondering all over again how things when so wrong.
Prior to reading this article i had forgotten just how much potenial the little cube had. It's been a back bencher for so long now, but after reading that i started to remember just what it was like back at the start of the generation. I know we've been talking about it for a while now, but it feels different now. It's kind of wierd and hard to explain. Sort of rekindled the feeling of tragedy.

I'd say those that keep saying this thread has been derailed/train wrecked/taken over by rabid fanboys can't really handle the truth of the matter, and want to believe the GameCube is on it's last legs. It isn't. We are nearing the end of this "generation", and we're about to see the best of the best get released for every one of our favourite systems. It's been constantly beaten in this thread that while third in popular sales, Nintendo is not third in profits, and that was very valid on this line of discussion. If anyone wants to talk about something being on it's last legs, why not talk about how Microsoft is casting aside the Xbox in favour of the Xbox 360 a whole year earlier than the "usual" console lifecycle simply because they can't take being #2 to Sony! If I were an Xbox owner, I'd be a trifle cheesed about the forced demise of my console. After all, it's still "all about the GAMES" right? Forced upgrades may work in the PC software world where they dominate - I'd like to see how it truly works out in the console field.
At least Nintendo is supporting the GameCube to the bitter end, third in popular sales or not.

While the GC support is still coming, there isn't really much of it worth mentioning. The fact that we don't know when the Revolution is coming means we can make a fair comparision about Nintendo's support at the end of it's life, to Microsoft and their xbox support. Speaking of which, as an xbox owner (and future early adopter) i am not the least bit bothered by MS dropping their support for the xbox. The reason for this is because the xbox still has lots of good 3rd party support well into next year. I mean just look at Black, it's amazing.
The GC is on it's last legs and it has nothing to do with sales. The reason the GC is on it's last legs is because it's losing 3rd party support. Even EA has backed off on it's support and EA tries to squeeze out every penny it can. You need to except that the GC is dying fast. The Xbox and the PS2 are slowing down, but the GC is dying.
