Loved the japanese version to bits and I'll be picking up the US version as soon as I'm able to.

For anyone that cares, I recorded some videos of the Japanese version back in July to show off some of the goodness

Click me and don't post me elsewhere, please (http://www.roushimsx.com/katamari2/)

(h264 encoded, so you'll need either VLC or FFDshow+Matroska Splitter)

Just some basic gameplay videos, nothing fancy. A lot of fun, and I'd say it pretty much rapes the first game in every way (even the soundtrack, though the interweb at large is pretty much divided down the middle on if the soundtrack is better or worse)

So what are some the new gameplay goals in this one?

sisko

So what are some the new gameplay goals in this one?

There is a lot of new variety added. There are still the traditional "as big as you can in this amount of time" and "roll up as many of these" as well as a few others. New goals entail "how fast can you make it this big" and "make it as big as possible and hit the checkpoint"

There is a great deal more variety and detail in this game compared to its predecessor. I like it a a lot more, and the only thing I dislike more is the cluttered navigation screen.

RETRO EASTER EGG!

Roll up an arcade machine for a familiar Namco tune ;)

I've got it reserved. Its funny, the only 4 games I've reserved in the past year are Katamari, DDR Extreme (they came out on the same day last september) and We Love Katamari, and DDR Extreme 2 (WLK coming 20th, DDREX2 coming 27th)
So, I'll probably have it by the 21st.

As good a reason as any to finally break down and set up HDLoader on your PS2! (the Japanese version at least has no problems running off the HD; guess I'll find out if the US version works ok once i pick it up)

So anywaaaaaayyyyss... I'd run over to Target tomorrow if I hadn't already reserved it at GameStop. But I can't wait for Wednesday.

Thanks for the awesome videos! I've had the fake soundtrack for this game for a while, I love a lot of the songs. I really want the real soundtrack though as a lot of the recordings were very long loops.

I'm glad they fixed it so you can see through obstructive objects between you and the camera rather than just a shadow. (If only Mario Sunshine had done that)

They also fixed it so you don't get stuck on obstructive objects. Or at least if you do, you're usually not stuck there for a minute or two while items are being shed.

Oh, and the intro. Awesome as usual.

All levels can be played in Co Op and in some levels new paths will open up if you're playing Co Op. The Santa level actually has a variety of different pictures that are randomly selected.

Co Op is the heat; the key is communication. Once you get the hang of doing turns, you'll be destroying your single player scores. You can go faster and turn sharper...makes for some intense gaming :)

IGN has an article.

"I suppose I'm doomed to never know what the guitar playing apple's problem is, how the elk got on the windowsill, or why the superhero is saluting at the crocodile's birthday. Oh well."

http://ps2.ign.com/articles/650/650100p1.html

While they like it, they say it's like the second bar of Twix. The same as the first one you just finished. I disagree. From the videos posted above, I have to say it's MORE. More of what I want. I really don't care about multiplayer. All I want is the single player goodness. And from what I've seen, it has that in spades.

It's like they expected it to be a lot more. But a lot more would ruin it. Keep it the same. Apparently they just hated the coop. Bah. Who wanted that anyway?

All I'm expecting from this sequel is lots of weird stuff to look at. And that's exactly what I'm getting.

They also said the sound's not as good. I agree. But I also think the new one does have a couple really good ones. But hey, the music got a 10 last year. Lightning can't strike twice. So a 9 is good enough.

I didn't know that the game is coming out tommrow in the US. I must get it! I got the first, and I loved it. Gotta buy it! Gotta buy em all!Well, it says it's coming out tommorrow. But that means it's being shipped for the most part. Some stores won't get it until Wednesday. (Though I'm hoping for an early arrival and early call from GameStop.)

Just to be safe and prevent myself from having to do the same thing I did a year ago, run out to multiple stores only to find it at an EBGames I'd never been in before in a town I'd never been to--though it was the first time I ever went somewhere I'd never been and didn't get lost--though it was the nicest laid out and nicest looking EBGames I'd ever seen, wood grain really does something to a place--just to find it, I preordered it two weeks ago.

I really really really want to play it. Really really really now. After The Simpsons is over I think I'll play the original again. Like last night. And the night before. Damn, I love this game. I've been getting in a lot of practice. Dammit, I've never gotten Eternal 3 yet. So I need all the practice I can get. Hopefully I can get Eternal #3 by Wednesday. Then I'd have completely finished the first--short of finding every single item--before buying the second.

Can't wait! :D

It's funny you should mention that. I was really hoping for a level where you would already start out big (50m or 100m) and the point was to work the Katamari down to 10M by bashing into obstacles and picking up items that blow up taking a bit of the surrounding stuff with it.

Yes. You pick the BGM at the same time you pick your level. You don't need to go out of your way at all to change the song.

The race levels are FUN. Fast, and take getting used to, but FUN.

The gingerbread house is pretty cool too, but the level is simple, and it provides little challenge. Still fun, but definately the most boring available.

Awesome. This game, is just plain awesome.

While I'm not a big a fan of this soundtrack as I was the first one, I still like it. The fact that you can pick any song you want is very cool. I've only played it for like 2 hours, so I've only done a few levels. I didn't bother yet to go back and try and get a bigger one, but I will in the future. I've also yet to try the Co-Op mode, hopefully I can take it over to a friends house or something and screw with it.

These are the kinds of people that make me realize why Wings was able to stay on the air as long as it did.

WLK is awesome so far. I agree with IGN that the music isn't quite as good as last time, but the physics of the ball are much more forgiving; you don't have to fight your ball as much getting it up ramps and over walls. It might be just me, but it seems like there is a HECK of a lot more stuff to roll up in the levels (I've only played to the campfire level so far). I really enjoy being able to play as the other characters this time around as well.

More of the same? For the most part, sure. But who says that's a bad thing? :)

picked it up today and have played a few good hours of it. i have to say it is definitiley a worthy sequal. The presentation is great, the story is funny as hell, the graphics were tweaked nicely, and the levels are varied greatly.

after hearing all the iffy reviews about the music i was surpised to find out how wrong, imo, people were. the soundtrack is varied and fits with the game really well. i am happy with the music direction in this game.

it was $30 well spent imo

game is wonderful, a thing of beauty. Hell yeah its more of the same. More of the same kick ass stuff that made the first one a permanent feature in my PS2. With more levels and more stuff to roll up, plus lots of new goal types, this is one bad mamma-jamma.
I've rolled the Sun, but have not yet gone back to improve any of my initial rolls.
I've located 4 presents and about 10 cousins.

I don't think the music is worse, just different. If anything I miss the Hoshino family not being as involved. They were totally crazy, but there is a nice bonus you get that helps make up for it once you beat the game.

Wonderful game. As good as the first, if not better.

Finally picked this up today after stopping off at about 6 places between yesterday and today. Yep, more of the same...which is all I wanted. It's just as polished as the first one too. So far, a good bit of the music is remixed versions of tunes that appeared in the first one, and they're pretty good. I've only played 4 stages so far, and the underwater was my favorite so far.

If you liked the first one and wanted more you'll like this (like me!), otherwise this game will NOT change your opinion of Katamari Damacy.

I got this today. Awesome game! Totally hilarious. People are writing it off as more of the same, but they're wrong, it's not more of the same, it's completely different while being completely the same all the while making fun of itself in the process. If that makes sense.

It's a bit differently designed than the first, I'll tell you that much. Instead of having your home planet, the space mushroom with your cousins and Earth all separate, the screen is all one place split into a few sections. You run around on the screen (While a beat plays to your footsteps) and choose what to do. You can walk (Fly) up off the top of the screen to visit the Cosmos and look at all your progress. (You can even import scores and times from the first game, and the imported stars and stardust and constellations get added to the stuff you get to roll up later.)

The levels are completely new. Some are easy, some are hard. We've all seen the videos of underwater and the schoolroom, there's also a childs bedroom which turns out is connected to the back yard then eventually the whole neighborhood. I didn't have enough time to explore before I ran out of time...

...Which leads me to the Kings new way of getting angry for you being a loser Prince. No more lightning, well, I'll let you find out yourself. RUN!! (Literally)

The King's just as flamboyant as ever. Talking about weird stuff as usual. Going off on tangents while speaking to you until one of the Earthlings sets him back on course.

You get to play as any cousin you pick up. This is cool. An the gifts, looks like you get to wear as many as you want at once. (Not sure as I only got the flower so far.)

You can choose whatever music you want for a level.

The opening as more spectacular than before. As is the practice stage where you actually get scored.

Some new level types. One kind has you picking up all the items in a set amount of time. (Cleaning up the kids room for example.) Another is the race, which I haven't gotten to yet.

All in all, I say it's not disappointing if you love Katamari. It's the same goodness but with more creamy center and crunchy coating.

Also, the cutscenes, kick ass. Better than the first. Sadly "I feel the Cosmos" girl is gone, but instead in her place are a series of really hilariously weird "King back story" scenes about the King as a child and his father. I can't wait to watch them again.

Whoo!

BTW, I lost twice. Two levels. I need more practice. But damn is it funny when you lose. LOL

An the gifts, looks like you get to wear as many as you want at once. (Not sure as I only got the flower so far.)

Unfortunately, this is not the case.

However, the presents are either for the head/face or the body, and you can wear one of each at the same time. :) My favorite combination so far is the buddy and horse. LOL

There may be a few minor spoilers in this so feel free to skip over if you haven’t played yet and want a total surprise (like I did).

Put 9 hours in on it last night. I beat it and got 6 comets. Quite tired.

The last "level" is pretty awesome. You can get your Katamari more than three times as big as you could in Katamari Damacy and roll up some pretty wild stuff.

Overall, yeah, it's definitely more of the same, but the key word is MORE. Levels are a LOT bigger than in the first one meaning much more things to roll up. I'm at 2900 unique rolled up thingies. I've probably got another 600 or so to go.

Presents are easier to find this time around, bar none. I managed to get most of them on the first pass.

Another welcome addition is the ability to restart a level once time expires or your goal is met. This skips a bunch of load time in the event you have a poor performance. The first one missed this feature desperately, I’m glad they implemented it this time around.

As far as I can tell, there are no eternal modes in this version, which, frankly, sucks for those who just want to casually roll up the world. However, one of the levels has no time limit so that may be a consolation.

Some of the "collect X of Y" levels are pretty damn hard (Paper Cranes, i'm looking at you) and some of them are pretty damn easy to get 100% on (Candy levels); so it's a mixed bag there. I'd say this game is harder, overall, than the first for trying to perfect/comet each level.

The “new” levels with original goals/objectives are a mixed bag. I don’t really care for the “Collect 50 total objects for maximum size” but the Sumo and Snow levels are a riot.

The quality of the soundtrack, sadly, is down. But, it's hard to follow up with what is one of the best game soundtracks from this generation. There are some REAL gems here though; Angel Rain, Beautiful Star, and Baby Universe come to mind. It's definitely not as genre-spanning over the top as the first, but this is still one darn fine soundtrack no matter how you slice it.

Graphically, it's an improvement, but it definitely still retains the charm of the first. Characters and objects are more animated giving a “busier” atmosphere to each level. Some objects/elements have a more rounded quality to them making them crisper.

Overall, this game stands up right next to the first, but has to be taken down a peg since, frankly, it’s not a truly original concept anymore. The first was given such high accolades because nothing like it had been seen before. Now we’ve seen it. That doesn’t make this game any less of a worthwhile purchase; not by a long shot, but it is something to consider. But, I, for one, wouldn’t mind if we got a new Katamari game in the same vein every year.

I had it all paid off long before it came out (since it got delayed by 2 weeks GRR) so all I had to do was pay the remainder added on by sales tax, which was a whopping $1.24 and the game was MINE!!!

I got to jump right into it at my boyfriend's house and we were beside ourselves with laughter over the intro. Oh, man, I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE KATAMARI

LOL that was great. This game just keeps getting better and better. I think I'm almost done already because I rolled up a freakin' huge katamari just now: (small text to avoid any spoilers on how big you can get) 3442m! to be exact. The race track level I think is my favorite so far, I don't know why but going that fast is just so fun.

I couldn't believe the damn hair/bread thing. They did all that stuff just to set up that one damn thing, I swear. These guys are crazy and I love them for it.

Oh.. My..God... This game is Freakin' awesome!

I just beat it. The final "level" has you making a 500m Katamari, the world really is huge. So when you finis all the levels, you have to try to roll all the planets and stars and roll up the Sun. Man, the credits, the cutscene after them, awesome. Then you get to do a few more things.

First is the same as the old game, the Royal Memorial lets you view all the kick-ass cutscenes, plus a couple bonuses. I already have the first bonus unlocked, it's the original group of scenes from the old game in Japanese all at once. Pretty neat. I don't know the second yet. Also, all the music as well. It really makes you realize the soundtrack is nowhere as bad as people think. There are a lot of really great songs on here.

Besides that you get to.. well.. remember at the end of the first? When you rolled up all the countries on Earth during the credits? Well, imagine that + the movie Armageddon. You'll see what I mean.. if you're lucky. ;) Man, sweet!

Well, back to rolling.

BTW, anyone know how to get Eternals this time? I really REALLY hope they're in here and really REALLY well done.

I haven't heard anybody comfirm that there are eternal levels in this game, I certainly hope there are, but when I was doing the 500m one I got it up to around 2000m and the screen started going that cloudy white color that the first one did on it's eternals, so maybe?

They all do that when the Katamari gets too big. In the original, you knew you got Eternal when angels started flying around the Katamari.

They'd be stupid not to put them in, especially since all through the game the King makes it clear they're doing it for one reason, to please the fans. And what else to plase the fans than an Eternal stage on the final level? My GOD how cool.

Anyone check any FAQ's? I'm gonna head over to GameFAQS.

Everlasting Love is an awesome song.

As is "A Song for the King of Kings". Every day. Every night.. um.. something something something. Great song.

Oh, and Sunbaked Savanah. The one with the animals singing.

Baby Universe is very good.

Angel Rain makes me feel French.

Oh, and "The Royal Academy of Katamari".

One Chip March has a great beat.

Edit: No FAQ's at GameFAQs. :(

Edit: Nothing so far on GameFAQs boards either.

Hey, anyone notice that depending on the level you're on, your character changes appearance? On the campfire one, their hair is on fire and on the snow one they're freezing. Hilarious. Also, I love the King's Father mask.

Edit: Dammit, someone on GameFAQs says there's no Eternals. WTF? That can't be true.

Really tho, I was never able to get any bigger on the eternals than I was able to on the timed mode. I had much more fun unlocking the eternals than I ever did playing them. Wouldn't really bother me that much if they aren't included in the sequel. The gamefaqs peeps are saying that there aren't any eternals so far in the jap version which as been out for awhile...so if they are correct, i'd say that there are no eternals in this game.

On a side note, I think they took a better angle....either large as possible or fast as possible for the 5 main stages. More replayability than eternals, imho.

I disagree. Eternals are IMPORTANT. The second time you visit the Elephant, you get a chance to get to 1000meters. But that isn't enough! In order to roll up the King and Queen, you have to be 3500 meters! It's IMPOSSIBLE to get that big unless you're this guy..

I am pissed that I won't get a chance to explore. PISSED!

Anyways, heys, after you beat the game, lots of new stuff appears on the map. The girl from the previous game lets you play the ending again. (Dodge the Sun) The crown is the Memorial. There's another child in green on the screen that wants all the cousins. I wonder what he does when you have them...

LOL If you start the level early while the King is still talking (By powering up and taking off) the King cries about you ignoring him. LOL Some levels he says something different, so try all of them. "It's finally happened. We're being ignored. How can we believe anything anymore?"

That "other child" is the Hoshino Boy and I am very anxious to see what he does when you find the other second cousins. With the Father, and the two Hoshino children appearing on the select meadow, I must wonder, where is the mother?

Damn. I've only got 15 so far. Which is only 38%! I' sure there's a few on the Elephant level. I better go and try again. Do items picked up in "Fast as possible" mode count? I hope so. Here I go.

Not true. I got to 3560m on my second play, and I'm currently at 3620m as my maximum.

BIG SPOILER

You need to be ~3000m to get the Queen and ~3200m to get the King. You'll bounce them, but you can get them on the roll-up.

The credits are fun. But dang, I missed one person and the Queen was sad I was refusing to roll up the people. Shoot. Well, I had to miss it because I was trying not to get rolled up myself. (Until the end when I get to my home planet.)

Just remember that the present for the Elephant level is inside the mountain. It's Mt. Fuji. The present that is. And the mountain it's in. You wear it on your head. LOL

BTW, it's the little things that count...

Notice in one of the cinematics, the Prince (King as a teen) is driving with one of the "Beginner driver" tags on his car. Which is a hovercar. LOL

Notice when you're big enough in the Elephant level the helicopters follow you. LOL Must be news choppers.

You can pull the cars off the ferris wheel.

There is a futuristic floating city somewhere. LOL You can get to it by riding an elevator island.

Damn, I just did the whole thing and didn't find any NEW cousins. There's four in here, yet all I found was old ones. Including the Prince riding on a dragon.

Edit: Okay, seems everytime you do the Saturn level it's a different place and size. Right now I'm on some mixed up mashed up world with an Eiffel Tower on an island and the words "OH MY WOOD" written on the side of a hill. (In Hollywood letters) LOL

Oh my Wood is right. Looking around with the L1 buttonshows how much stuff is in this level, yet it's a Saturn level so you can't even go all the places. Dammit, they put so much detail in the game but restrict you from going to it. But I'll try anyway!

Well, according to an FAQ, the boy opens up a level that when you complete it, opens up another level (The rose sitting in the field) which the goal is.. get this.. collect ONE MILLION ROSES! It takes place on the main map. I am betting if it's like the normal main world map, this may be the "Eternal" equivalent we're looking for. Now to collect all the dang cousins. Wow.. One million roses? Really? Holy cow that sounds fun.

Is there any objective to the Snowman level or do you just make any snowman you want? Do you have to use the parts to make a face?

Oh, and I think I am developing an unhealthy attachment to the Hoshino family...

I think the one million roses thing is cumulitve with all the levels including the tutorial from what I read somewhere.

The one million roses takes place in the ice rink around the hill where the snowman is. That's it. It's tedious....not so much fun. You don't even get bigger (at least I haven't yet, and I'm 10K roses into it)

I think the snowman's head needs to be 50% of his body. That's what I was aiming for and got the superscore.

see, I've gotten the head near equal the body and got the superscore also. It seems to make little sense.

Not NEARLY as good as the original. The rolling is the same, however the music isn't as good, the humour isn't as good. I was disapointed. Menu isn't as good. Not to mention they didn't give us the awesome Japanese box. Oh, well. Still good though.
