View Full Version : The U.S Saturn cases are horrible. Anyone agree?

I mean, why did Sega of U.S have to release them in a big clumsy sized cases? Wouldn't it been cheaper using regular sized jewel cases instead? Games that came with multiple discs are a pain in the ass to take out, and put back in, and trying to avoid scratching them. Good thing, games aren't released like this anymore.
Panzer Dragoon Saga games in mint condition my ass. Only if you never taken the discs out and never played it.
Sorry for the bitchy fit.

Yeah, I hate them too. I guess there wasn't a definitive standard for packaging at that point? I remember music CDs being sold in huge-ass cases for a while, which was supposed to cut down on loss.
Wouldn't be so bad if the hinges didn't break so easily.

I guess it would bother me more if I didnt have an entire case of brand new replacement SCD/Saturn cases in my closet. :P
But yes, I agree. That's why I try to stick to import Saturn games whenever I can. But with games like RPGs, you have no choice unless you speak Japanese.

Yeah, I've always been annoyed by the us Sega CD and Saturn cases. Because if they got a crack...they were niegh impossible to replace. Also, a lot of early Playstation 1 games used this same case style. Luckly, they switched to standard cd sized cases after about the first year of releases. :)

I have a love/hate relationship with them... I love them because they look really cool when lined up properly and allow for much larger/more detailed artwork.
I hate them because they break and crack so easily... them darn tabs!
PAL Dreamcast cases, on the other hand, have very few redeeming characteristics. I despise them.
:D
ps Some of the very early PSone games came in plastic cases like the Sega CD/Saturn (along with the big cardboard ones. Those suck.)

Bah! Sure they break easily, but have you ever tried to use a PC-FX case? They're like opening a puzzle box with the prize of your CD getting flung across the room.
...but, NEC did smarten up and switch to standard jewel cases.

Sat cases are a bit aggrivating. I've had them fall a short distance of 1 foot and crack. I remember back in the day of the prelaunch of the DC that there was a rumor flying around that Sega was going to continue to use those types of cases because they still had a glut of them in storage. Good thing that rumor fell flat.

I think they look really nice while on display, but they crack way to easily to be likeably. Sega had the right idea with their Genesis and Master System Boxes. I don't know where they went wrong.

Yeah, I hate these cases too. I mean they look nice in mint condition but they're very fragile and impractical compared to a standard jewel case or even a DVD case. Collecting them is a bitch since they're so hard to find in decent shape. I've resorted to storing all my saturn/sega CD/early playstation games in slim jewel cases for the sake of uniformity and convenience. Though sometimes I look at the 2 Saturn games for which I have minty cases ( Sonic R and Virtual On) and think "If only all my Saturn games had cases that looked this good..."
I'm not too terribly anal about having mint+complete games, but I'm sure those who are go nuts collecting for the Saturn.
I guess it would bother me more if I didnt have an entire case of brand new replacement SCD/Saturn cases in my closet.
How'd you get your hands on those??? @_@

They're sold on Ebay. Gameliquidation sells them. However, only 4 costs about $20+.

Yea, I cant stand them either. There are always cracked/broken ones if you buy a lot. And like someone said, the replacements dont come cheaply. Thats one reason, Im happy that I dont collect for that system anymore.

I've bought several lots of games off Ebay to get one game and then I'll have 5 or 6 extras that I don't need. At one point I had almost 30 duplicates.
I went through all my Saturn games and traded out all the shitty cases in my collection for good ones out of the dupes, then put the whole lot of dupes on Ebay. NOTE- I made sure to disclose that almost all the cases were either cracked, had broken tabs, or were flat-out broken.
Now all my cases look nice. Of course, the next time I move I'll shatter a quarter of them. Oh, well.

I love them too. I really do. They allow for big art work and I've never broken a case acually. I find it strange however that for the 32 bit generation the market shifted to small cases at a time when Sega was using big cases, and shifted to big (DVD) when Sega shifted to small cases. The only thing I don't like is how easily scratched the cases are.

I hate 'em.
Break easy, scratch easy, and just overall bleh.
Jewel cases would be best, but if i could scan and convert the covers to DVD-sized cases i would.

Put me down in the list of people that really like them. They aren't easy to keep in mint condition, but they really do look neat. We've taken to selling them at the GOAT Store with "box" - not "poor box" even if they are cracked because otherwise we would have like two "good" cases. Of course, we make a judgement call on how far cracked they are (Anything through is "poor"), but even with so few good condition ones, yeah... I love 'em.
Even though I don't like much on the systems, I have wanted to collect them just because of how they look. I'm kinda doing that with Playstation longboxes for the same reason.
PAL Dreamcast cases, on the other hand, have very few redeeming characteristics. I despise them.
Heh, PAL Dreamcast releases are my absolute favorite for some reason. Their cases are absolutely horrible and stupid, yet I think they are just great. God knows why. I'm slowly working on completing that set :)

Once again... I love those :)
I'm an oddball, I guess.

I love em'.
The aesthetics of them were a driving factor for me to complete Sega CD and US Saturn collections.
They just look awesome all lined up on a shelf.
Sure they break easily. God knows how many thumb tabs I've tossed in the garbage, but other than that, they're beautiful.

The only problem I stated was the lame slide-in disc holders it had for games with multiple discs. I never had problems with the cases.

The US cases indeed suck but you were still lucky to get even that much love from Sega.
Europeans were treated to godawful plastic CD holder with a cardboard sleeve hotglued around it to keep the two sides together. To make this a true gem in design, they "forgot" to add tabs to hold the case shut or to hold the manual in place. So everytime you do as much as take a glance at the case, the manual knocks the CD off the spindle, the case opens and the CD drops down to the floor.

How about renaming your topic then? Oh, and editing your main post.
Yeah, that should settle the confusion...

To cut down on shoplifting.

No. They probably cost the same as the regular cases, you have to remember, they were cranking them out by the boatload. I'd bet they weren't even paying $0.01 per case.

Maybe you're just really, really clumsy. I've never had a problem with them.

Add me to the list as well i all ways thought the, SegaCD&Saturn case were a waste of space.
Still boggles the mind why "SOA" did so in the frist place x_x
These days i keep all my, U.S saturn games in a carry case and... throwed all the original case away.
I only keep 3 games in there original case still.
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Enemy Zero
Magic Knight Ray Earth
Sure not keeping all my, U.S Saturn games in there original case takes away it's value.. but i don't care period :P

Not to try to counterpoint your post too much, because I do agree with everything you said, but...
CD cases contain less plastic, so that should've been cheaper.
CD cases are a standard thing, not a design Sega had to make.
-and, perhaps most importantly-
Shipping CD jewel cases versus Saturn games is WAY cheaper. 25 CDs fit in about the same space that 6ish of those other cases do. So if nothing else, they were getting pegged on four times higher shipping costs.
...but again, I think they look awesome, so I'm not complaining ;)
