Here is a newbie question. which I figure others are thinking about as well: I've never assembled a game from the different binaries before. Once the downloads are completed, what is the next step? I'm guessing uncompress them with winrar or a similiar program. But how do the parts get pieced back together to make the full image?
:hmm: I think you need to re-read this thread  I don't know how many
times that ones been asked.
Along with whats the password

O.k I'm done venting :D

Once you have the 16 files down and in the same dir open halflife-dcgold-xanadu.part01.rar
and extract the file, this will use all the other .rar's automaticaly and
you end up with one .NRG file.
Open this and burn it with the latest Nero 5.5.1
You'll get an error if it's the wrong version Nero

Hope that clears it up for ya ;)

Sorry HappyDude, so many message I must have skipped some. O_O

HL is really pretty cool. I gave it quick test, and now my wife is starting to play. I have nothing to compare it to having never played the PC or other system versions, but I do agree this would have helped the DC's cause if it had been released back in the day. As has been said before the load time is a bit long. Just sitting through the intro, it paused a few times, although this doesn't bother me as much as it does some. The graphics are clear and rather intense. Considering we are both sick today, I imagine this will get quite a work out today. Thank's to Raedon for hosting this, I've got to sign up for my ISPs newsgroup service one of these days.

If anybody is interested in making the game complete, use the following link to find CD images, and front and back case covers.

http://www.cdcovers.cc/dreamcast_h.php

I printed them out in color and now the game looks as complete as the others in my collection.

What settings am I supposed to be using in Nero? I just tried to burn it twice and failed. I think I'm using the 5.5.10.7 demo.

Any help is appreciated.

Very nice covers!

What size should I print them out at so i can cut and insert them into my cases?

No settings.. just file/burn images then select the .nrg cd image and 8x burn speed and voila!

Butta: I burned it going the completely "default" route. Nero starts up, and asks the following questions:

Media type? (CD)
Compile a new CD, or copy a CD? (compile a new one)
Audio CD, Data CD, or other formats? (other formats)
Audio & data mixed, video CD, creat a CD from an image file? (cd from image file)

At this point, it brings up the browser window, and you select your NRG image. Then it says "burn", and you hit the button. The only options in that window are burn speed, and a checkbox for making an image file. It should be unchecked, and I burned at 12X.

Are you sure you have the 5.5.10? If you get an "unexpected exception" error, it's probably the wrong version.

Got it to work, I think I was burning it at too fast a rate before.

hooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo :rocker:

Ok I've tried extracting the files but they don't link. Win Rar doesn't prompt me for the enxt file and when I try to extract it manually it wants to overwrite it. How do I make the files link to each other?

Read my earlier tutorial :P
All the Rar's have to be in the same directory.
and when you open rar part 01 you should see "HL-DC.NRG".
This means winrar has looked through all the archives and can extract
the whole file no combining needed ;)
If you see" HL-DC.NRG -->" something is wrong.

Ok what should the final size be?

It should say in the archive, but mine is saying 562,939,720 bytes.
Mabye someone who has burned it could verify. (I'v still got a few days to go damn Dial-up ;) )

this is easy here man.. RAR files self crc.. if you are incomplete or one of the files fails you will get an error when unraring.

I hope this is OK to mention, I'm not being specific to one particular auction. Just zap this post if not, Mr Moderator:

eBay.co.uk has a couple of sellers for this one (Haven't checked eBay.com). I just scarfed a copy for a quite reasonable £4.
Having a cacky dialup connection and an older version of NERO, it was the only way to go.

Head to eBay before they cancel the auctions.

Shit, Shit, Shit, Shit,!!!!!

It won't burn >:(

I'm using Nero 5.5.5.1 and it says the requiered media is CD-R\RW
and the media in the drive is CD-R.........WTF? :?
Isobuster can't see any files, so I can't rip it to another image :hmm:

Does this image require the exact Nero version to burn or something?

Yes, you do need to upgrade. I tried buring it with that version, and got the same error. Once I upgraded, it burned with no problem. I'll also have it on Kazaa (the full image) when I'm on in the evenings. Just look for HL-DC .

I'm in the "ain't gonna be able to do it" camp too, I suspect... Is anyone here going to be providing copies? I've found someone who has these, but just bland CDRs, and I don't know if they're "byte-padded" to make them less damaging to the system (or does Nero do that?). So, anybody making the "byte-padded" version with any label/insert art that I've heard is also available? I've got a couple DC things to trade with, but not a lot...

Raedon
02-12-2003, 11:41 AM
heh, byte padded.. all versions are the same.. this is the same with all DC rip releases (unless by different groups.) Even at 4k a sec dial up you guys have over a week to download.. just leave your system on 24/7..

slapdash

heh, byte padded.. all versions are the same..

Er, are you misunderstanding me, or I you?

Here's an example... CDR has 650 Meg, game takes up 200 Meg. The traditional way to burn starts at the inside (may have this backward), burns 200 Meg, leaving 450 Meg on the outside of the disc. But DC, GD-ROMs start at the outside, so these burns will eventually mess up the laser unit. But, if you pad the game with 450 blank bytes, it pushes the content to the outside, where the DC normally looks for data, and so it's less damaging to the laser unit.

Like I said, I may have the inside/outside details wrong, but the gist of it is sound.

Now, most games aren't byte padded of course, but I've heard that some tools do this for you to save wear and tear on your Dreamcast. I'm wondering if anyone can make a version that way, since I don't want to burn out my poor DC.

Or is the game big enough that it's not really an issue? I do seem to recall figures in the 500 Meg range earlier in this thread...

How does having the data on the inside and the laser read starting on the outside "mess up the laser unit"?

My old phonograph plays 45's and it starts from the outside as well - doesn't seem to have any more difficulty starting further in than it does travelling there naturally as it would on a 33 1/3.

I'm just curious, because it's the first time I've ever heard this theory.

yet more video game urban legend. Using cd-r's in a dreamcast hurt them the exact same as any original dc game would.. The gd-roms just die.. nothing you can do about that. Talk to someone who played a lot of PSO and ask them how their DC sounds.

I'm pretty sure the dreamcast are pressed inside out like all other games. The reason for this is you can stream info from the inside tracks a Lot faster than the outside.

Perhaps it is an urban legend, I don't know. I can't even remember where I heard it for sure... The speculation was to prevent piracy in a sense?

Anyway, here's one page that at least alludes to it:

I have no idea how I missed this the first time around.

Is there any way to get my hands on this still?

Anyone sharing on P2P or FTP?

Been playing it and loving it. my only gripes are, the aforementioned loading times and the massive save files on a VMU. Later today getting a 2nd VMU for HL from a friend. Been enjoying Blue Shift first. That and setting up the controls takes some getting used to.

Jebus, I will have to try and find this tonight. Shoot, I'm more interested in the PBA Bowing than Halflife. Are these on P2P or would it be best to hit the binary sites. Anyone in the know? All help greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I've been enjoying Half-Life alot the past few days, really an excellent port of the PC version (save for the saving and loading issues). Shame it was never offically released.

has somebody got a real proto/promo of this game? i'm asking this because someone offered me one, he claims it's not a copy and he showed me a (blurry) disc scan, which doesn't look like a bootleg

Shoot, I tried Forte and Grabbit, but don't see any references tp PBA Bowling or Halflife. Would some kind soul burn a copy of these for me please. I will gladly PayPal expenses to anyone willing to help. Half Life would be cool, but for some reason I just really want to try bowling for the Dreamcast. Anway, PM if you can help out.

Cheers all.

Revisited here...hope this is ok. I finally found this on-line but it's in a mds/mdf format I'm not familiar with. I know you use Alcohol 120%, but I don't know how to configure that so I'm not bruning coasters.

Can someone PM me and let me know what I'm doing wrong.

Sorry Kris and Tim if this is verboten.
