does anyone think that old sports games will have an increase in demand as the number of video game collectors increase in the future?
right now i think the market for old sports games is pretty dead - (except for people like me who try to obtain complete collections). so i was just pondering about the demand for old sports games in the future
im not talking about high demand where a game will go for like 10$ a pop - but a demand where a game that is put up forsale for a low price would get sold.

never. sports games are normally worthless. at one point i had about 15 copies of fifa 95 on megadrive when i was buying up all my friends machines a few years back, and could not give them away, all the pawn shops turned them away as they had shelves full of them.

I think sports games from the SNES era on back may have some demand, but not much from that point forward. Ice Hockey for the NES is a great game in its own right because it offers a unique experience. These days, and for a long while previously, sports games are all more or less offering the same thing. Look at Madden, Gameday, ESPN 2K5, or whatever and they all pretty much do the same thing. You can argue over which does it best, but they all are pretty much trying to offer the same experience. That being the case, I can't see much demand for these titles as long as new updates of the same old formula keep on being released.

yea i was pretty much refering to the 16bit and older games
i feel the same way about the old games - they offer a diferent experience - especialy for one on a reto kick moving from a current sports title to a 16 bit tite to an atari title -- its a load of fun
i was thinking that there will be more collectors every year and more casual gamers looking for a retro kick - especially after reading about some old game in a mag or web site or seeing a streaming video online or through thier cellphones or google cube ((yup its comming - jump on the (ticker symbol) ONT bandwagon while its cheap!!))
sometimes ill come across a bunch of sports titles for real cheap and i buy them thinking that possibly in the future they would be in greater demand (for sale or trade)

Depends on what it is really.
Dusty Diamond's All-star Softball - NES - YES
Blades of Steel - NES - YES
Tecmo Super Bowl - NES - YES
Mutant League Hockey/Football - GENESIS - YES
Madden 95 - GENESIS - NO
NHL 95 - SNES - NO
etc.
etc.

I think sports sims (Madden, NHL etc.) will remain worthless.
The arcadey sports games like Mutant League, NES Ice Hockey, Punch Out, NBA JAM etc. offer something that is not readily available in a prettier package every year and will emain desirable.

On the PS, like most other platformers, sports games are worth the least of any genre auctionwise [racing titles also do very poorly, comparatively RPGs tend to get nice prices].
I'd like to see someone answer my question with all honesty. Who buys sports games anyway?

I love buying sports games, they are FUN, that is, you have to like sports as well.
I am always trying to get my hands on older sports titles such as tecmo super bowl, NHL 94 etc. great times....yeah...

I like most sports games also, though I don't buy a new edition of every sport every year, since there's usually not too big of a leap year to year.

I'm not sure how serious you are with that question... millions of people buy them every year. Rememeber, people like us on this board are in the minority of gamers. Most people only buy a few games a year, and for many of them, one (or all) of them will be the latest edition of Madden, NBA, FIFA, WWE, etc.

I'd be willing to put money on any sports game with a yearly installment continuing to be worthless for years to come.
And Haoie, if you don't think people buy sports games, think again. I know far more people who have current gen gaming systems (PS2, Xbox 360) and nothing but sports games than those who don't. I think inside the hardcore (or whatever you wanna call it) gamer echo chamber, people tend to lose sight of that. (Not trying to pick on you or anything, I just notice about once a month someone here wonders who's buying all these sports games. Well, there's a lot more people out there waiting for the next Madden than there are waiting for the next Final Fantasy.)

both my brother and my tenant buy every sports game as it comes out, waiting for the next installment to see whats been added or changed. my brother will play madden for many seasons with each years release, though i cant imagine it being fun, as he routinely scores over 100 pts. he also gets into recruiting people from ncaa, and even goes so far as to assure each teams roster is correct. so yeah, there are people still into sports games.
i dont think games with a year suffix will ever be worth much, as they seem to be least desired and most available. the exception being the latest game for a system, like madden '98, is going to be worth more than '93, simply because its 'better'....i myself break out the NHL '94 on occasion, as me and my friend play 'no goalies', and its more fun when every shot from the corner of the blue line scores.
games that vary from the norm i think will always have a bigger calling, meaning the fringe sports titles or those only loosely related to the sport..rock n roll racing is one that comes to mind, also any of the mutant league titles(as mentioned in a prior post).

Well I'm one of the people that buys old sports games along with other games. I love sports and its great to grab a copy of an old sports game and play with a bunch of retired players I used to idolize. Its not all I play but I have a lot of fun with sports games. Not to mention all I need is 5 bucks and I can buy 8 older sports titles. When I go to the local game shop to pick up some stuff sports games round out the last few purchases cause they are sooo cheap and readily available.

i wasnt exactly thinking about today but 5-10 years from now
i personaly get a kick out of playing or trying to play a sports game on the atari with friends - its real fun playing the ULTRA REALISTIC basket ball game while knocking back a few shots
or the nastolgic fun of playing the genesis titles with your old high school teamates
i just have this feeling that these titles will endup being more valued by game players in the years to come
sure all the 3d games probably wont have too much of a draw since the sports games of the future will most likely be similar (just have more fancey features and AI )
there will always be nostalga - but i think the retro intrest will keep on getting bigger

Since nowadays there's really only EA crap being made, I'd say in 5-10 years people will undoubtly have the attitude that old sports games are common with few distinguishing features [as they're still mass produced, every year, under the same formula] and hardly worth collecting.

Exactly my thoughts, the NBA Jams/Hangtimes, NFL Blitz series, ect. Will always be cool and worth picking up for different systems to me.
However, the only real point to stuff like Madden is to see how far a system has come. Like say looking at Madden 95 on PSX, then Madden 2005 on it. IMO

I think a lot depends on the quantities produced and formats a game was released on. Any version of Fifa that isn't the current one is generally worthless, unless you look at something like Fifa 96 for the 32x which still isn't worth a huge amount in the UK but to a US collector there's more interest.
