View Full Version : The worst super crappy game you love.
I know I can't be alone, a game that is total GARBAGE but I loved it for some reason!!
Dreamcast - Seventh Cross evolution
Horrible physics, crappy enemies, horrible AI, and the bosses were pushovers, but my Crystal bottom floating crushing arm mouthless mannequin faced humanoid will rule the world!

Hells ya, I dropped so much $ into that game just because of the gore factor :)
My pick would be for Baseball Simulator 1.000 for SNES. Lots of people dont like it (or sports games at all), but I liked the fact that you could "fairly" build your team to be competitive. Of course I never made it through a whole season, but I did play it ALOT back in the day

I can't help but break out the three stooges game on my gba every now and again. I loved that thing on the nes back in the day and now I can play it on the go.
Even though it probably makes me the lamest person around I also enjoy the Life/Payday/Yatzee gba game. I just love being able to play life by myself against the computer even though the computer's ai is horrid. Reminds me of staying over at my friends place when they'd have game night when I play that cart.

I seem to be one of the only people that liked Driver 3 (I refuse to spell it out Driv3r). It definetly has its' share of problems (most the on-foot stuff, which I actually found easier by switching to first-person mode and then controlling it like a FPS) and the uneven difficulty is maddening at points but overall I really had fun with it.
Another good (IMO) "sandbox" game that got horrible reviews is Roadkill... a nice combo of GTA and Twisted Metal.
I still play State of Emergency form time to time. It's not a great game, but it's fun... it got hyped way too much before its' released and most people were expecting GTA3 v2 or something...
I also liked Castlevania 64, though most CV fans consider it an abomination.

Virtual Hydlide
I don't know if I love this game, but I definately have an appreciation for it. Bad games are usually bad because they're a rush job with a movie/tv show liscence or a budget bin release where they had to cut corners everywhere. Virtual hydlide is a special beast though, from beginning to end you can tell someone put a lot of time and effort into this game. This was definately someone's baby that they poured a lot of sweat tears and blood into but it still turned out a train wreck. From the detailed futuristic dungeons in the later levels to the interesting motion captured enemies this game practically reaks of failed dreams and unachieved goals. I salute you virtual Hydlide, it's only by playing the bad games that we can truly appreciate the good.

There are alot of games that I like that most people think are garbage, but the one that takes the cake has to be............
TREVOR MCFURR IN THE CRESCENT GALAXY
for the Atari Jaguar. Yep, I actually like this game. I know, I know, it's the most horrible game on the Jaguar, yada, yada, yada. But seriously, I like it. I mean, don't get it wrong, I know that this game isn't the greatest, but I actually like to pop it in my Jag every now and then and give it a go. The game doesn't have any background music, just sound effects, and the gameplay is pretty horrible. But it's most redeeming quality, is the fact that this game just absolutely oozes with color when played on a RGB monitor (with a Jag RGB cable of course). Overall, I'd have to say that the Jag is a pretty crappy system, but the one thing that it could do, was put some serious color on the screen, especially if you played it on a RGB monitor. Trevor McFurr was one of the most colorful games on the Jag period. It had this one level, that had like a pastel color background, with these silver mettalic babies that would float around and shoot at you. The backgrounds of that level might actually remind some people of Yoshi's Story on N64. Alot of really weird enemies and really colorful backgrounds.

You know what, back in 92 or 93 I bought a Neo-Geo Gold System, and the game that I ended up getting with it was Cyber-Lip. I liked that game alot. I can't think of any incredibly crappy games I liked off the top of my head, but I think Final Fantasy Mystic Quest may fit into this thread. Everyone seems to hate it but me. I really enjoyed it. I wouldn't place it among the best in the series, but I like it better than most of the newer offerings.
There was a thread like this before...it was called like "games you love that everyone else seems to dump on" or something like that. I thought it was in the classic discussions, but I spent a long time searching and couldn't find it. I'd love to go back and read it again. Can anyone help?

I was always a fan of hydlide and super hydlide/3 for nes/genesis, really different action rpgs in the ys strain that get dumped on alot because they were uniique and hard.
super pitfall is another great one..badly codded but a very deep challenging game complete with second and third quests.
deadly towers was another great one that I loved that the world hated, such a hard unfair game...but a good one.

Superman for NES. He's a subway commuter.
NES Superman is frickin' rad. Clunky and ugly, but at least First Star tried to do something cool with the license instead of making a wimpy platformer or shooter. And the music is great. It has almost nothing to do with Superman, but it's great.
I also second Deadly Towers. DT is actually a brilliant game incognito. It just takes a little time and effort. Get some maps from an FAQ and the game is suddenly 1000 times better.
I'll add Monster Lair for the TG-16 CD-ROM. It's the long-lost Wonderboy spinoff. Not a very deep game, and the music is atrocious considering that was supposed to be its selling point. But I'll spend hours and hours playing that stupid game over and over. I love it; can't figure out why, but I do.

State of Emergency (X-Box)
I like the arcade-style, sorta scorebased gameplay. Plus, if I play this and watch Dawn of the Dead at around the same time, they seem to correlate.
Mega Man X5 (PSX)
It may be a little easy but I still find it to be a pretty solid platformer especially when compared to the horrid X6.

AD&D: Heroes of the Lance for the NES. I still can't figure out how to play it, but it's the ONLY (in my knowledge) DragonLance video game and DragonLance is my favorite fantasy series. This game was soo poorly made, but the character models are pretty accurate to the novels' descriptions and cover art, and that's the only good thing I can say about this game.
Also Mario is Missing! and Mario's Time Machine for the SNES. A lot of people write them off as crap because they're educational and don't have the best controls or gameplay, and they were too simple, but I was still thoroughly entertained and amused at the concepts of both games. I should pop those in again. I almost beat Time Machine but the only reason I lost was I missed the time limit, and I haven't played it since.

Corvette (PS2, also on Xbox) - repetitive, horrible load times, rubber-band AI gets annoying in the harder mode. Yet, I'm halfway through the game and intend to finish it someday.
Malice (PS2, also on Xbox) - This platformer would have been regarded as mediocre on the PS1 or N64; but playing through it isn't a bad way to kill a lazy Saturday.

I'll fourth Deadly Towers. I've talked about this at length in other threads, but once you get powered up, its a great game with great music. Could've done w/o the dungeons completely, though. I think the game shouldbe remade, and get a sequel. 2-d , though.
Mini Golf for the VCS wasn't bad, I thought. Not much different than any mini golf games in the DP arcade, really...just better graphics.

I can't believe someone already mentioned Superman for NES. I played it two or three times and each time I enjoyed it up until I got to a point (the same point) where I could not figure out what to do or where to go. Still, I really enjoyed it.
I'll also add Spiderman: Return of the Sinister Six for NES as well. Sure, the play control could be a little wonky (and the enemies on Mysterio's level could cheaply kill you), but it was a decent platformer with a sort of Bionic Commando-like feel to the webbing and graphics good-enough to recognize the Spiderman license.

Oh, I just remembered, I think Mischief Makers (N64) is pretty much universally hated, isn't it? I love that game. Never was able to get more that a couple of S-Ranks, but man was it fantastic. I know Treasure must make bad games, but I sure haven't played one.
Another one that might fit this list for me would be Snowboard Kids (N64). I know it's not hated or anything, but how many people could claim it as one of their favorite multiplayer games of all time? Despite its issues, I have literally had more fun with that title than any other kart racing game, with the possible exception of Super Mario Kart (SNES), and I'm not even sure about that one. I love the music, the environments, the power ups, the controls....I even love the terrible balance and the shoddily done character designs. I don't know. Something about the game just clicks with me. I actually just ordered SBK for the DS, although I'm certain it's going to pale in comparison to the original.

Definitely NBA Action 95 on the Genesis. Talk about a game that pushed sports games forward, this is it. Sure, the gameplay on the court was hideous, glitchy, and cheesy. It was off the court this one grabs you. About 50 different injuries (and always of varying length), full create-a-player, trades, drafts, contracts, franchise, and things only get better from there. NBA Live didn't have anything close to this for another year, and even then it didn't even match it.

Driv3r, I must be like one of five guys on the planet that liked this. Infact I think it's a great game! Sure the missions/story and on foot missions suck, but Driv3r accels at what the series is about. Driving cars. FAST! The control and vehicle physics are the best I've seen in this genre, when your flying down the freeway in a classic musle car it really feels nice. As does plowing down the road in a semi and detaching the trailor only to watch it take out a row of cars. People buy it wanting "another GTA" and this game sucks in that sense! But if you buy it for a fast paced car chase movie style game then you will be quite happy! Basicly the better you are at handling your ride, the more fun the game is.

It doesn't have any MLB licenses so all teams and players are fictionist. But you could play a full 165 season. You could completely build a team from scratch or edit any of the built in teams.
But what really made it different was the 'ultra plays'. Basiclly, depending on the team you had you had these points you could use to do some insane stuff.
180 mph fastballs....check.
Double your hitting strength....check.
Leap hundreds of feet in the air to stop a home run...check.
Super speed to perform an in the park home run....check.
And other insane stuff to either rob or beat the other team down with. Pretty fun stuff. Just a word of warning....the music might be annoying, at least I thought it was.

Just a comment in general...anybody who hates on Mischief Makers needs to be...not able to procreate. The game got killed at retail probably because the back of the box didn't give people an idea how damned good the graphics look, and probably had a screenshot of that stupid area with the swinging polygon ledges. Aside from that, the game has some really nice looking areas...but people weren't looking for 2D games, and especially not ones with large areas of solid color, on the N64.
Anyhow, I would have to say that I actually like Mutation Nation. It's too hard for me to get through without feeding credits, and it does get pretty bad at parts...but man, there are some nice areas in here! My favorite is actually the museum, that short gallery walkway before you enter the boss room (ram-headed guy who has a t-rex skull come out of his chest - this fellow's on the box art in the back).
A damn sight better than Robo Army.
Eight Man (also on the Neo) is pretty good, all things considered.
Finally, I've noticed that some people call Sengoku and Sengoku 2 crappy...I'll be the first to admit that the original's mechanics are way too simplified and unforgiving, but this is a great stretch of two games. I think that it's Sengoku 3 which is the steaming pile of crap, to be honest. All style, but even that's not as consistent or polished as it should be.

add me to the Driver 3 list as well. I love just driving the cars around in the GTA series, whereas my friends all do nothing but create carnage, so I guess that's why I've always loved the Driver series.

I recently got Wreckless and I liked it a lot, even though most reviews savaged it. I was also a fan of Felony 11-79 and Super Runabout (which the same team worked on) so I'm a fan of that type of drive and smash game.
I like most of the Sega CD FMV games except for Slam City, especially Prize Fighter and Supreme Warrior.
