Huh? Japan is not 60Hz as far as I know. Its the UK and possibly the rest of Europe which is 50Hz.

yeah, you are right, I don't know about plug types though

check this out http://maru-chang.com/hard/ntr/english.htm
it says the US/JP SP/DS charger is the same model number...does that mean they are the same part between jp and us? I gotta check my SP2 charger for its model number when i get home now.

Ok, im just going on instict here, but I am pretty sure this (http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=273&products_id=26) would work for all of your converting needs.

That will work for the UK, not US or the rest of the EU

Good find none the less (if you need it).

All you need is a DS charger for whatever country you reside. The output is the same on every DS charger and the input for the DS console would be the same aswell. If you are desperate MAKE a charger by snipping and splicing the DS input to an adapter of the same specifications and with your countries voltage. Wouldn't bother me doing that. What would I do with a Jap charger anyway, other than swing it about as a weapon against people who don't understand voltages.

good point, sometimes the most obvious thing is the the hardest to see LOL. Ive made plenty of home made dc converters, why not for this one too? unless you are saying use a DS1 charger for a DSlite. that won't work, unless you do wome solering and heat shrinking. :D

...hmm perhaps importing isn't such a bad idea...

any other incompatabilities anyone can think of? perhaps WiFi frequencies are different?

as you all may know, the navy blue and ice blue DS lites were having manufacturing difficulties and therefore shortages. WELL, it turns out the shortage was worse than projected...

my wife was trying to surprise me with a JP navy blue DS lite, but then Got an email saying supply was low, and prices were increasing to $199 so I had to decide whether or not to accept the price increase (of course I did) No indication of when I will get it now. they estimated they will receive shipments to fill all preorders on the colored DSs from 1 to 4 weeks...so that means a 2 to 6 week wait for me.

Oh well

here is the email. in it there are some links to news on the shortage:

Dear Riki Rushton,

This email contains important information about your Nintendo DS Lite preorder. Please reply so that we know how to process your order.

Nintendo DS Lite was formally launched in Japan today. While Nintendo published an annoucement on their Japanese web site overnight to apologize for the shortage, Japanese gamers were lining up already early in the morning to grab what was made available in Japanese retail stores.

Nintendo DS Lite Price Correction
---------------------------------

If you have been following videogame news in recent days, you will have realized by now that the demand for the Nintendo DS Lite is larger than what Nintendo can produce. After declaring production problems with the Enamel Navy and Ice Blue editions last week, Nintendo today published an announcement on their web site where they apologize for the shortage. Please read the following news for more information:

http://www.lik-sang.com/news.php?artc=3812

Due to the huge shortage, any shop with Nintendo DS Lite systems in Japan can sell their complete stock within 23 milliseconds for a premium price. Most shops don't even have any systems. These very same shops in Japan also know that one quadrillion import gamers want their system at launch date (everyone does!), and that they can earn much more by taking a bit of risk and by shipping their units out of the country. This, coupled with the pricey services that the courier companies and middlemen offer for getting the units out of the country, results into a higher price than originally hoped for. We believe that this situation will continue throughout the month and until April.

Please reply to this email and let us know if we can apply the new price of US$ 199.90 to your order. To compensate at least a little bit for the higher price, we will include a $10 Lik Sang Cash Coupon into your parcel.

When Will Your Order Ship:
--------------------------

We can currently not answer that question accurately, but you should prepare yourself for a waiting period of several weeks. The shipping date of your console heavily depends on Nintendo's production schedule and we will keep everyone informed through updates on our web site. Again, please read the following article with more accurate details on the shortage and when orders can be shipped:

http://www.lik-sang.com/news.php?artc=3812

Please especially note that even with the higher price of US$ 199.90, it may still take weeks until enough stock is available and your order can be shipped.

If You Want To Wait For A Lower Price:
--------------------------------------

We understand that you may be disappointed about the new price. Lik Sang would love nothing more than to ship all orders on release day, but unfortunately we are not in the position to do so. The price will definitely drop down, but to what level and how long it will take for that moment to arrive depends on Nintendo's production quantities and if the huge demand can be covered in a short time.

We will inform you of any price drops by email and you can then decide if you want your order to get shipped.

Should you decide to wait, we will definitely keep your preorder spot. We will also fully accept if you should decide to cancel. If you at any time decide to jump back on the bandwagon afterwards, we will put your order back into its original position in the waiting queue.

Please Reply With Your Decision
-------------------------------

To make a long story short, please simply reply with one of the following options:

(a) Apply the new price to your order and ship it once enough stock arrives.

(b) Keep your order and inform you of any price drops in the near future.

Should you decide to cancel your order, please feel free to do so fully automatically in your My Account section on the web site. Alternatively, you can also drop us a short note via reply to this email.

With best regards,

Your Lik-Sang Team

I got the delay email today in class. My crystal ball is telling me that this wait will be far longer than Lik-sang predicts.

-On a side note-

I am lookng fucking hardcore for the 'cancel my order' button in the My Account section of Lik-sang and I am coming up with zilch. Could someone point me in the right direction for this?

Oh yeah, if I cancel, I get my money back, right?

Nintendo is about to sell 13 million more. I'm pretty sure anyone who has one will go out and buy the new one, unless they're poor. I'll have one the first day of launch in the U.S.

You're high. 2nd system buys will be relatively insignificant, as they always are with a redesign.

What was that again?

I think I'm missing your point. Are you trying to say that just because Japanese people lined up around the block on opening day that 13 million DSver.1.0 owners have gone and bought 13 million DSver.2.0? Uhh, no. And tell me Merlin, how exactly do you know that all those folks lined up have DSver.1.0 and are upgrading? It's a pretty picture tho'. x_x

I've been thinking about a ngpc. Never played one, never even seen one running. are they very cool?

I know I'll blindly get one someday. Seeing how I am obsessed with handhelds. still considering a n-gage too

reason why i ask if they are any good is cuz they are hella cheap at my local game stores, games are like 25 bucks for a three pack and the systems are like 30 bucks. they come in blister packs, like a repackged preplayed systems/games.

I proly won't get this thing till it is released in the US!

They have NGPC stuff in a games shop where you live!? The NGPC is the best handheld ever made! I imported mine from Japan. If you want I'll buy some games from you if you were to go to that shop and pick them up for me. PM if interested, please.

Buy one of these handhelds because they are getting more and more rare and one day they will be worth a fair bit, ESPECIALLY to a collector, so research, get the rare games. You'll love it.

But we earlier established that this was in reference to owners of the original DS upgrading and/or supplementing with DSLite. Long lines in Japan do nothing to indicate that current owners of a DS are buying this redesign. We can assume from previous hardware relaunches that most of these purchases are from first-time buyers.

It doesn't matter if you or I would; we're insane retro-collectors who represent about 1% of the gaming population (at the most). Regular Joe Gamer ain't gonna go buy a new system redesign when the one he's got works just fine. Hasn't happened before, won't happen now.

NintenDk

They weren't just lined up a block in Japan at that place in this pic. It was like around 3 blocks, down some stairs through some kind of tunnel system and around another few blocks. And as well average consumers who own a DS already either will or they won't buy a new DS regardless of what we type here -->

If you look at the GBA and GBA SP, i think you'll find that lots of people switched. The slimline PS2 was the same, most people I know switched.

The DS... Other than children, people who play it regularly will see the benefeits and decide to buy the DS Lite. I'm an insane gamer, but my collection is pitiful, I have less than you can imagine. I move from country to country all the time and just don't have the ability to start a real collection yet. I buy things, then get rid of them... The DS, well I don't have one, but if I did I would switch. The original design is horrible and chunky, the new design is actually respectable and competes with the PSP.

Besides the screens (which REALLY make an impact), the overall redesign, feel and compactness of the unit really stands out. And damn, this thing is shiny - and not PSP fingerprint-loving shiny, either.

I'd be willing to bet on $150, $20 more than the current MSRP for the DS.

1. Nintendo likes money.
2. It costs more than the regular DS in Japan.
3. It's 50% cooler than the Game Boy Micro.

looks good man (just like mine!). I must agree with everything that THATinkjar said, although I don't have any basis for comparison except for the few times I have played a regular DS at kiosks. The unit works superbly, although I prefer playing my GBA games on my micro.

still haven't had time to play many of my games yet though. I got alot of stuff in my life to wrap up right now. I'm kinda addicted to minish cap right now too, which has prevented me from playing much of any other game.

REDMOND, Wash., May 4, 2006 - Millions of people around the world already enjoy playing Nintendo DS™, and the system’s future looks even brighter. On June 11, Nintendo DS™ Lite joins Nintendo’s video game family when it launches in the Americas. The lighter, brighter version of the hot-selling Nintendo DS is expected to be priced as low as $129.99 at retailers throughout the United States. The inaugural color is an elegant Polar White with a raised DS logo on the cover.

Nintendo DS Lite arrives just in time for players to pop in the latest version of one of the most storied franchises in video game history. New Super Mario Bros.®, launching May 15, updates classic Mushroom Kingdom action with new features and fun.

“DS Lite and New Super Mario Bros. represent a double shot of gaming excellence,” says Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales & marketing. “We’ve got something for both lovers of beautiful, new gadgets and fans of old-school gaming.”

Nintendo DS Lite comes with a variety of distinctive changes that set it apart from the original - and from all other hand-held video game systems:

* It’s less than two-thirds the size of the original Nintendo DS and more than 20 percent lighter.
* Its two bright screens can be adjusted to four levels to adapt to different lighting conditions and to extend battery power.
* The microphone sits in the center of the unit, and the LED lights are clearly visible whether the unit is open or closed.
* The stylus is 1 centimeter longer and 1 millimeter thicker than the stylus of the original, and slides into a side storage slot.
* The Start and Select buttons were repositioned for easier access.
* A removable cover keeps the Game Boy® Advance cartridge slot clear from dust and debris when it’s not in use.

New Super Mario Bros. is just one of the many Nintendo DS games that look great on Nintendo DS Lite. Players set off on a side-scrolling platform adventure bursting with the style and superb game play that got many people hooked on video games in the first place. The Mushroom Kingdom is populated with friends and foes, both new and old, and tons of power-ups, including mushrooms that make Mario mega- and micro-sized. The Super Mario franchise has sold more than 184 million games worldwide, which makes it one of the top-selling video game franchises of all time.

Ever since its November 2004 launch, the original Nintendo DS has helped to redefine perceptions of what constitutes a video game. Many systems have been sold to people who are discovering video games for the first time. Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection, Nintendo’s wireless gaming service, has seen more than 1 million connections worldwide. Thousands of people every day log on to battle one another in Metroid® Prime Hunters or see who has all their Tetriminos (falling blocks) in a row in Tetris® DS.

Nintendo DS continues to broaden the market for video games. Nintendo DS has software that appeals to older gamers, hard-core gamers and even lapsed gamers. Brain Age™: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day went on sale in the United States on April 17 after encountering massive success in Japan. Nintendo will continue that momentum by introducing two upcoming titles that require more brain power than firepower. On June 5, Big Brain Academy™ arrives to challenge users with a variety of mental tests designed to evaluate various skills. Then on June 26, Sudoku Gridmaster will keep number crunchers busy with more than 400 sudoku puzzles, each one sanctioned by the original creators of sudoku.

The worldwide innovator in the creation of interactive entertainment, Nintendo Co., Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its Wii™, Nintendo DS™, Game Boy® Advance and Nintendo GameCube™ systems. Since 1983, Nintendo has sold more than 2 billion video games and more than 360 million hardware units globally, and has created industry icons like Mario™, Donkey Kong®, Metroid®, Zelda™ and Pokémon®. A wholly owned subsidiary, Nintendo of America Inc., based in Redmond, Wash., serves as headquarters for Nintendo’s operations in the Western Hemisphere. My rep came in today. She didn't know anything yet but did mention this press release. Nice to see a final date. But damn. June 11th?

Guess I won't be getting any bundle this time. NEW SMB will be bought day one DS Lite or no DS Lite. Even if "N" announces a bundle on the 9th.

So I'm actually hoping for no bundle. Because I don't want to be tempted. Because of course, even if I own NSMB, I can't guarantee I won't buy a bundle too. LOL

She said she'll be back in next month to switch out our DS Kiosk with the Lite. All the stuff she was telling me I was like "I know. I'm pretty well up on my Nintendo knowledge". LOL Can't wait!

Yeah, so I just realized how ridiculous this looks:

Nintendo Co., Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its Wii™,

Ok, back on topic.

So it's not coming for over a month yet, and it's only going to be available in white, initially?

More money for PSP games, I guess. Disappointing.

"The lighter, brighter version of the hot-selling Nintendo DS is expected to be priced as low as $129.99 at retailers throughout the United States."

Nah. $150.

The price of old DS is decrease after the DS Lite release?

Teknik_SE-R

probably, but only to get rid of their stock of the original DS.

I think they were going to keep both of them out.

I don't see why.

They might keep the original out for a few months after the lite is released, but only to sell all of them.

unless the manufacturer has a contract to continue making them, this is going to be the case, guaranteed

For a bundle maybe. :) Seeing how the DS is $119 at Wal-Mart I don't see why the Lite wouldn't sell at $129. And besides it's been pretty much 100% confirmed without a shadow of a doubt that it will be priced at $129.

So... this will probably be the last meaningful update to this thread. *sniff*. We've had some good times, right?

[Insert 80's dream-like video of the great memories from this thread...]

Anyway, yesterday Nintendo announced that the DS Lite would be heading to Europe on Friday the 23rd of June - which is exactly one month today! New. Super Mario Bros. follows a week later, and Electroplankton the week after that in early July.

Europe will be getting two colours: white, which was released in both Japan and the US (and proved very popular), and the much rumoured (and much anticipated) black. Or chocolate brown as it looks like in some of the promotional shots.

While I already have, and love, an imported Navy DS Lite, I'm pretty damn sure I'll pick up at least the white next month, if not both. Yes, I am insane.

You can read the usual press release blurb at Nintendo-Europe here (http://www.nintendo-europe.com/NOE/en/GB/news/article.do?elementId=Z9ktvFs1LILlR7g_KiA5U47N7DMEz kpA). That'll be £99 please, sir.

You still don't have Elektroplankton in Europe?

=( I weep for those who didn't get imports.

Hey! Of all the games that we need to get over here... Electroplankton isn't top of the list, if you ask me.

Besides, aren't we getting Elite Beat Agents before you guys? :P

Well I broke down and pre-ordered one today after I told myself I wouldn't because I already have one.

But its lighter, brighter, and comes in pearl white to match my Mac stuff, I'm not made of stone.

I'm just telling myself that it's a gradutation present :)

I guess I should pre-order one soon if I'm to get the color and all I want at launch. My friend also plans on getting one the same day and a few other buds of mine already with DS's plan to meet up that night at IHOP to game the first night. :)

It looks as if Nintendo of Japan are planning to unleash a Lite version of the Rumble Pak (http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ds/online/ds_shindou/index.html) soon. About time - this should have been bundled!

That's cool, but they need to make more games that utilize it. So far they have what, Metroid Prime Pinball and that's it I think.

I hear that StarFox Command and Mario 3 on 3 will utilise it. There was another game, too, but I can't remember.

I thought the North America launch was just getting white?
