If you have ever bought something, Not knowing it was rare until AFTER you bought it, This is the topic to post it at.

As for me, I bought a copy of Tank brigade for the Atari 2600 - Sealed and with a Kaybee toys price sticker on it. It wasn't until at least a week later that i found out that it is an R7.

Anyone else do this?

Moderators: I have sarched for a topic like this but have not found one.

I bought a Sega CD with a Genny and 9 CD games from a guy at EB games and one of the games happen to be Snatcher. I didnt know the game was rare until I looked it up. I got all this for 10 bucks.

I didnt actually buy this. It was giving to me from a friend who was closing up his video store for good. He gave me the only Neo Geo game he had. He told me nobody ever rented it. The game he gave me was Metal Slug complete and never played. Yes, the USA version. 8-)

Heart of the Alien: Out of This World Parts I and II for the Sega CD. I pruchased the game about three weeks ago at the flea market. I purchase it with Dark Wizard and three other Sega CD games for $28 (all of them complete BTW). I knew I've gotten a great deal on Dark Wizard (the game is becomming harder to find now and days), but I wasn't too sure about the price of Heart of the Alien. Well I checked on ebay and I saw an auction of Heart of the Alien (complete) about to end for $56! @_@

I got too luckly that day in the flea market.

Pokemon Box for Gamecube. Nintendo.com was selling it for $19.99, it easily goes for $160 - $200 on ebay. Crazy. I wish I would've bought more than one.

Ninja Gaiden Trilogy (SNES). I got it mint and complete for $5.99 at a local used video game store. I had no idea what this was going for until months later.

heybtbm got the Pokemon Box thing right on the dot. Just for shits and giggles (and because my stepbrothers wanted one too) I checked ebay for Pokemon Box. After looking at the listings, I apologized to them, explaining that for some reason completely alien to me, their would-be Christmas present septupled in value, and asked them if they would like something else. :embarrassed:

So so sad that the rarest thing in my Room of Doom is fucking POKEMON BOX.

Well, a few years ago my local video store was getting rid of all their PS1 games. I noticed this game that they were selling called Roll Away by Psygnosis, and it looked kind of cool to me. It was only $9.99, so I took it.

Anyway, today I got really bored, so I decided to look up words in DP's rarity guide. I looked up the word "quest" and found this game, for it's Japanese name is Kula Quest. Well, I found it quite surpirsing to be a 5. Yeah, I know, it's only a five, but still, I though it was more common than that.

What I should of bought also was their Speed Racer. I found out today that it's a 7, and thus would have been my rarest game, which right now is Tengen Tetris. I only starting to collect games recently and don't have the money to buy expensive rare stuff, though I will once I get a lot of common games. Unless, of course, I find a great deal.

I bought NCAA College Basketball 2K3 for GameCube when it first came out. I had a hell of a timing finding it, but there was a store in the Mall of America that had a pile of about 20 of them. If I had known how hard to find it would end up being, I would've snagged them all. In fact, by the time I found out how rare it was I had already gotten rid of the copy I had.

I'm actually not 100% sure it's as rare as I've seen it listed...

But I have a copy of a German 2600 game called Raumroboter. I found it on some online list as an R9, but haven't seen much evidence to back that up...

If anyone wants to give me a couple hundred bucks for it thought, it has a tear on the front label, but otherwise it's in good shape ;)

My copy of Team Buddies at some lesser known game store at the mall. I had a demo of the game and thought it was really addicting, so I was like "What the hell. I'll look for the game." It just so happens I saw it at the mall the next day, so I bought it. Then I realized its rarity compared to other games. That made me feel happy. :)

I've been racking my brain trying to think of something. Nothing crazy jumps out like a sealed snatcher or rsg. Mine would have to be a complete Neutopia 2 I snagged for $10. Didn't know much about it, I just knew I enjoyed the first one.

Mine would have to be a complete Aero Fighters for the SNES

I found it at goodwill for $3.99, I knew it was somewhat hard to find, then when I got home and checked the DP guide it was even better than I thought when I found out it was an R8 and probably the hardest to find regular release SNES game and it was complete :)

I picked up this game Arkista's ring for NES. I don't think it is worth much but it seems to be somewhat rare. I payed about 5 shipped for it.

Also I recently picked up a Tristar Super 8 converter which seems to be pretty rare. I've heard often that the picture quality decreases with its use, but I cannot see any difference. It was part of a larger lot including Castlevania X for SNES.

Bought a copy of Malagai (2600) for $3.00. It had been sitting in this shop for weeks. The only reason I bought it was because I didn't have it already and the 3rd party label looked interesting.

Imagine my shock when I got home and the good ol' DP guide listed it as being worth...well...this was an older edition and didn't list a price. All is said was "$$$$" @_@ .

a video store near me had peekaboo poker for rent for years.

the store finally decided to ditch its nes games for 5$ a pop, my friend picked that and rc proam 2 up.
he said he'd sell them to me for 50$, I didn't have the cash but he gave me the games for some stupid magic cards instead.

Meh. Nothing too spectacular. I think the best surprise I ever got was finding out that marko for the Genesis was a R6 having just bought it for a dollar at my local EB.

Oh wait.. actually, now that I think of it.. I remember buying a Sega CD bundle last year and receiving a complete copy of Jaguar XJ220 in it. I remember being pleased finding out that it was a R5.

Never bought anything that I later found out was rare...but I have rented. Back in 1998 or 1999, I rented Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout for PSX...and later found out it was rare. Of course...it's not rare now thanks to the re-release.

Earthbound... Bought it on clearance sometime in 1999 or 2000, or around then, for $29 new. Found out a few years later that it was sought after, so I managed to dig out the box for it, the box that I thought was long lost :)

Reason for buying at the time? Great price, and I remember renting it and enjoying it ;)

When I was just getting in to games my friend would look for videogames at thrift stores for me. He calls me up one time and says they have Jr. Pac Man for the Atari 2600 for .99 cents. I said sure I'll take it (always a sucker for the Pac Man).

I purchased a Turbo Duo in 1995, before some people even knew what it was, or that it even existed. I had a ton of games for it, the Ys series, Exile II, Lords of Thunder, Beyond Shadowgate, Bonk 3, the list goes on and on. Sold them about six years ago to a local used shop. Came in about a week later just to look around and everything was gone; the dude working there said some guy immediately bought it all up the day I traded it in. I knew then and there I was an idiot.

Some other stuff I traded away, only to regret a few years later:

Dragon Force
Guardian Heroes
Suikoden I & II
Space Adventure Cobra (Sega CD)

Needless to say, I'll never do it again.

All my stuff I bought as a kid in the late 70's, early 80's. Most of it is considered 'rare' now. ;) LOL

I could never live with myself if I willingly ever threw a video game out.

And when I bought ROB for the NES back in 86, I never thought it would become so sought after. I honestly hoped Nintendo would've supported it more than they did. That's one of the main reasons I wanted the NES.

When Kay-Bee Toys blew out the SMS 2 and games in the early 90s, I was able to get Buster Douglas Boxing, Spider-Man, and Golden Axe Warrior, probably 10 bucks each (I remember some of the games were more expensive than the system!). It was only years later that I found out they were rare games. Plus Golden Axe Warrior is a lot of fun to play. :-P

Ultima IV (SMS) [DP R4]
Boxed, with manual and map. Found it for $4 at a Sunday market. Just thought it looked cool and nice in it's mint condition.

Super Off-Road (SMS) [DP R6]
Found a boxed copy for $5 or something. Bought it because I love Super Off Road.

Street Fighter Collection 2 (PSX) [DP R6]
Okay, I new it was rare - but I didn't know it was THAT rare. $8 complete.

Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors' Dreams (PSX) [DP R5]
I always thought this was one of the more common titles. $10 complete (or about that).

Rock 'n Roll Racing (Mega Drive) [DP R5]
Had no idea it was rare at all. Bought on the basis that I played it back in the day, and it was kinda fun. Complete, $1.00

The Adventures of Lolo 3 (NES) [DP R5]
Bought it because it looked interesting (I buy almost every puzzle game I see, really). $3.00 boxed at Sunday markets. Not only did I find out it was a rarity, but it turned out to be one of my favourite NES games ever.

My two complete copies of No Escape. One for the Gens and one for the SNES.

Oh yeah.. I almost forgot the BIG one! Some 2 or 3 years ago.. in the middle of the night on eBay.. I noticed a guy put up an auction for two boxed game systems. He said they had been up in his attic for years and his wife wanted him to get rid of them. He wanted $59.95 BIN for both.

I knew what a Super Nintendo was certainly and he had a boxed DK SNES bundle but I had not ever heard of a Turbo-Duo.. but I snatched up the auction immediately.

A day or two later when I searched for TDs on eBay I was shocked to see what they fetch! Here I was thinking i got a deal on a nice SNES.. but guess what? ;)

Most of my rares were all bought back in the day, so I have very few that I made a conscious decision to buy specifically because they were rare. But I guess the biggest surprise was finding out that my SNES Aerofighters is an R8, the only R8 I own. Now if I could just afford Radiant Silvergun...

Oh well, thank God I got all that I did when I did, or I would never have all the rares that I have now. I guess that's why it won't be such a big deal for me to spend whatever it takes to get Radiant Silvergun whenever I can afford it. I sure got alot of great deals on other games over the years.

My Mom wanted to know what I wanted for Christmas (around 93' or 94'), I told her a Turbo Duo or a 3DO. When she found out how much they were she told me I wouldn't get one until she found it at a garage sale.

Every time we went to a store I would ask if they had a Turbo Duo, but to no avail. Then a clerk said "We have a really nice kid who is trying to sell one. Do you want his number?"

My Mom negotiated the purchace for a Turbo Duo with around 15 - 20 games, the price? $100 cash!

I played it for years and enjoyed it very much!

I traded it to a member here "Captain J" in 1997 along with all of my precious games and my Atari Lynx (with all games) for a Nintendo 64, Zelda :Ocarina of Time, and Castlvania 64.

Years later around 2000, I found out how rare the system and some of the games were. I had Y's 1,2, and 3, Neutopia 1 & 2, Cosmic Fantasy 2 among many others.

I collect only what I like so I decided to sell them on ebay (before I knew about Digital Press and right when ebay started to get known).

You people have some really great buys.

I remembered a few NES valuables that i bought for a extremely low price:

Adventure Island 3
Lolo 3
Megaman 2
Megaman 3
Megaman 4

The price, well, around $1.50. Goodwill was practicaly giving the games away. And those games aren't all of the NES games i bought that day. There are others, like Uninvited.

this is a good thread!

when ebay had the 'sell things and donate the money to victim of 9/11' sale, i was searching through the video game lists. i found a listing that said 'Add Sega Game to your Workout Equipment!'. this seemed interesting, and i had not been into collecting for long, so i thought i'd bid on it. i wasnt out to spend big bucks then - my system budget was $20 each and my game budget was no more than $5 each. but i wanted this thing because it was so weird, so i bid $25. then $30.50. and i won!! so after several months of emails to the seller, i finally got sent my item in the mail, sent in its original box....but even a Heartbeat Personal Trainer Genesis in a box with writing on it is a good buy for $30. i didnt think about this for a while until i was searching for a place to move my NES multicarts(bought 13 sealed at a garage sale for $5), and i found DP.

i also bought flintstones 2 and bubble bobble 2 for $5 each at the same place, aerofighters for $2.50, and a 3do game gun for $4 before i knew they were rare. too bad i passed on snow bRothers for $2.50! I actually told my girlfriend, who said i should buy it because the guys on the front were 'cute' that i dont buy games based on 'cute'. it was $2.50!! i still dont have that damn game.

Just found out recently that the Christmas Nights sampler disc I got years ago is worth quite a bit now.

Christmas Nights is the winter-holiday themed version of Nights Into Dreams for the Sega Saturn, with all sorts of extra bonuses and presents to unlock. It was given out in magazines in the USA and was an official game release in Japan. The sampler version is so scarce now that it's quite expensive on eBay ($50+)...

My copy of Fun and Games for SNES I can't remember if it's an R7 or R8 but I went to a pawn shop and they had it there with a few other SNES games. I knew it was rare and heard about it so I snatched it up very quick and it helped started my collecting really. Before I had no plans to collect. Just buy games, beat them then sell and trade them off.

I'll def be checking in that pawn shop again.

This is a fun thread.

I don't have many "super rare" games, but I bought a lot of SNES RPGs at the time that are worth a bundle now. Now I wish that I had kept them complete. I always threw away the boxes, never seeing games as collector's items at the time. That's taken a ton of resale value off my collection, but ah well.

Probably the "rarest" thing I've bought, not trying to get a rare item at all, was the Mega Man 7 Anniversary Edition, with is I think an R5 now.

I also had Christmas NiGHTS at one point, not knowing it was going to be anything special.

I have a few Genny games that ended up being uncommon now. MUSHA, Castle of Illusion, Thunder Force III, and so on. MUSHA especially surprised me in that it really became a cult hit.

No idea it was rare and I personally thought I overpaid on it at the time, as Atari 2600 was a long dead system and I had considered all the carts for it nearly valueless, but I bought it anyway as it was complete. I also bought Popeye at the time as I remember loving that game. It sat around for a few years until I got around to selling it and then I got a couple hundred for it on ebay. Now I keep a rarity guide in the car with me in case I come across other strange games like this.

Vulture Attack for the 2600 is mine.

I knew that it looked like a weird atari game but I had no idea that it would be an R8. All that for a buck 50 :)

Starfox Weekend Edition.. I didn't know it was rare (I never really thought about that kind of stuff at the time). And I almost passed it up for 2 bucks.

Earthbound Complete was mine, bought it at Wal-mart for $10 when they where clearancing the last of the 16 bit stuff. I also had a copy of Christmas Nights, think I ended up accadently breaking it. X-P
