There's been a lot, which is the best?

I kind of like both Tetris DX and Magical Tetris Challenge for Game Boy Color.

Anyone played Magical Tetris Challenge for N64? How is it?

While not techinically the best conversion, I gotta say Tetris Worlds on Xbox was the most fun for me personally, if only because of online play and voice chat. Really chill alternative to blowing the shit out of teenagers with a machine gun.

I'm probably on my own here, but I really liked the licensed NES version. I just played it to the point that the other console versions seemed "off" somehow. And I've never owned a Gameboy of any sort so yeah...

ive yet to play DX on GBC, but i hear that is the best version out there. if it is a minor upgrade to the original B&W, then it would pretty much have to be

i also enjoyed sega tetris on the dreamcast

tetris + monkeys = fun

it's a close one for me between Tetris for the NES and the B&W GB Tetris, but i think the NES version wins :)

I'd have to go with The New Tetris on N64, followed by The Next Tetris on PSX. There's just something about those variations.

But if you want pure old school Tetris fun without gameplay addons, I'd have to go with the B&W Game Boy version. Tengen follows closely.

The New Tetris on N64 is amazing, though the music is sadly weak (especially compared to Tetrisphere, which isn't nealry as good but has a fantastic soundtrack). It's my favorite home version of the game, especially when playing multiplayer.

Tetris GB is the best handheld version. The scoring system was perfect and the block physics were great. DX borked both of them up and added some weird bugs. When it comes to "pure" tetris, Tetris GB is where it's at.

Tetris Grand Master is pure and complete sex. I hope we get TGM Ace in the US at some point, because I LOVE the series. It's too bad Arika asked Mamedev to remove TGM2 from MAME, but at least TGM is still in there (and in Zinc) for all to enjoy. I love the insta drop, piece look ahead, hidden scoring modes, ranking system, music, graphics, etc etc etc. If TGM Ace is as good as TGM 1 and 2, then it'll easily top The New Tetris as my favorite version of the game. (never played TGM3 since I think the nearest arcade with any TypeX stuff is about 2000 miles away)

I forgot all about Tetrisphere. It's not as good as the original but I played plenty of it back in 99 or so. Definitely worth wasting a few hours on.

I'd say either the GB version or the NES (nintendo) version. The NES version may get the nod for color and the awesome music.

Magical Tetris Challenge is very good for its Multi-player. It's def a tetris that everyone should check out.

Tetris Worlds has to be the worst.

I go for the original Gameboy version, but like the redo in Tetris Plus for the Saturn. Although the original mode is colorful and has the great music of the past redone, the way you warp into each level is so fast it's hard to keep up. Plus it gives you a huge block field so the alignments for drop downs can be rough.

I gotta agree with that one. Playing it on Live is a great plus, adding countless replayability. The fact that you can listen to custom soundtracks is nice as well.

My second place one would be Tetris DX, although I have high hopes for Tetris DS.

Tetris Plus for PSX for me, by far. The 2 player head to head is super entertaining and addictive, very different from any other version. Also the puzzle mode is very challenging.

Make sure the little explorer does get killed by the spikes.

Hiya there,

I'm sure that there will be many opinions on this, but what is your favorite version of tetris? I am looking for anything pre playstation so systems like Genesis, SNES, NES etc...

It's just that it's a game I never have gotten into, but everyone seems to love it. I want to give it a shot.

Any help? :)

My personal favorite to play in one player endless mode is the original B/W Gameboy version.

And my favorite all-around version is the NES Tengen version. It has great 2 player modes including co-op with extended playing field.

I quite like original GameBoy Tetris too, although I was pleased with the overdue update in Tetris DX for GameBoy Color. Both are great iterations to play.

The Sega arcade Tetris from the late 80's is also quite good and basically paved the way for more manic type Tetris games like The Grand Master series by Arika.

I'm really enjoying Tetris Splash on the Xbox Live arcade. There's not much in the way of game modes but if you like classic tetris this is a good one. If you get into the current-gen systems with a 360, check it out. Other than that, my next favorite is the one that came free with the original gameboy. I love that thing :)

Did anybody else ever play Tetrinet? Multiplayer tetris with tons of cool powerups and weapons. I don't think it was ever released on a video game system, but I played it on computer all the time in the early-mid 90's

Another vote for Tengen's NES Tetris. It's fairly limited as far as rotating pieces into place, but once you adjust for that limitation, it has a great feel. So much smoother and more well paced than Nintendo's versions. It also has great music, though the original Gameboy Tetris is even better (and that's something that really ruins the GBC Tetris DX for me, that has some of the worst music in any major Tetris iteration, in my opinion). The only thing that Tengen's Tetris really lacks is junk dropping in the multiplayer versus mode. If it had that, it would definitely be the perfect Tetris even to this day. High score saving would be nice, but I don't really miss it, to be honest.

If you're looking for a nice updated Tetris that adds new features while still remaining true to the original game, The New Tetris on the N64 is a nice game. The controls and movement do not feel as solid to me as Tengen's NES version, but it's good and the block gameplay is cool and feels quite natural to the basic Tetris gameplay unlike some other addit6ional gameplay elements that people have tried to introduce to Tetris.

On console, my favorite is The New Tetris for N64.
For the arcade, my favorite is Tetris Grand Master 2.
For handhelds, I'm really partial to GB Tetris (much moreso than DX or any subsequent revision of the game on a handheld).

I do agree that the block gameplay in The New Tetris (also included in Tetris Worlds GBA, among others) does add a nifty element to the game. However, there are those who will argue that infinite spin ruins everything (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetris#Easy_spin_dispute).

The original GB version still holds a certain charm. Good solid control, and for some reason no other version matches it musically. Pity the two-player mode is a bit lacking, and it also really needs a battery save.

You may also enjoy Tetris the Grand Master, a Japanese arcade game. (No ports of that one, is there?) There seem to be some YouTube vids of it.

I keep hoping that one day it'll see the light of day in the US, but it's pretty damn unlikely.

The two I am most partial to:

1. Black and white Gameboy version
-No surprise. It plays great, all these years later.

2. Nintendo's NES version
-I actually like it better than Tengen's version (which isn't worth the online/Ebay prices) and not just because it costs a lot less. Tengen's version is fun, don't get me wrong (Tetris is a brilliant game), but to me it is just another version.

I love the regular NES version, although I've not played any other. I'm really content with that one, which is probably why I haven't tried any other. To me the Tengen looks wierd, and (like Bangtango mentioned) to expensive for me to justify picking up.

As I said in this thread (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=83056), The Next Tetris (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Next_Tetris) on the original PlayStation, a version has yet to eclipse it. It's one of the versions that uses the break apart / chain reaction type of Tetris but stays true to the original. Has remixes of most of the classic Tetris tunes, a rank up/down system that adjusts the level / starting height of each player, keeps stats via name registration, and so forth. Large chain reactions cause your opponent's screen to do things like become invisable, spin upside down, etc. The objective is to remove some staggered blocks that reside at the bottom of the well before your opponent can get rid of theirs. The height of the removal blocks is based upon level which is based upon your ranking.

Next would be V-Tetris (JPN) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V-Tetris) on the Virtual Boy, it's just incredibly relaxing. I can turn on the mode with the starfield in the background and zone out for hours. Since you're totally focused on the game you can earn crazy scores. No distractions, no outside crap, just Tetris in the dark

The Tengen version of Tetris on the NES would come third, a great port of the arcade release.

Does The New Tetris really have infinite spin? The Next Tetris which is mentioned in that Wikipedia article is different than The New Tetris on the N64. If it does have inifinite spin, somehow I must have never noticed it. It's odd since I noticed the infinite spin right away when I played Tetris DS.

While I don't think it totally ruins Tetris DS, I do think it changes it so much that I can barely even consider it Tetris. I'll have to go play The New Tetris and see how I feel about it again, it's been a while since I've played it. I just hooked my N64 up for the first time in a long while recently anyway.

I think the thing is that there have been so many releases of Tetris that most people have surely only played a handful of them. I loved Tetris DS when it came out and enjoy, like everyone else, the original GameBoy version immensely. I would love to give the Arika arcade games a go even though I know I wont do well. I always thought that there should be a download Tetris game for the Wii, I hope they release one on WiiWare's launch. It would be nice if they included a simple version and then a Nintendo-themed version with the new features like on Tetris DS.

Apparantly there was a Tetris 2 for the Famicom from Nintendo that was completely different (and better) than the Tetris 2 that we got. The Retronauts blog really thinks highly of it:

majinbuu:

Truth is, pretty much any version of Tetris you will find (16-bit or earlier) plays at least decent or good, if not great. That is why you got so many different responses. Some have better music or graphics than others, maybe the controls or detection varies here and there, but the basic gameplay is the same on all of them.

You can't really screw that up, a person would have an easier time messing up a plain ham sandwich. Even those 110-games in one "brick" toys that you find everywhere for a few dollars play a basic version of Tetris and do it pretty well given the limited format.

As for the 32-bit or 64-bit versions of the game, I've never tried those but I also never played a "bad" version of Tetris on any earlier system or even those generic "brick" hand helds.

I have had tetris on gameboy since I was little and it is still awesome to play. I just picked up tetris for nes today. The gameboy version did not save high scores and I am pretty sure the nes version won't either.

So what is the best version of tetris on a console in your opinion? It would be cool to find a version that saves high scores since it would make the game even more addicting.

Here are other threads that tackle this identical question for reference:

2007 (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=108841)
2006 (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=78861)
Tengen version vs. the NES version (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=102471). (Also a great read because you get to find out why a user named Kevin PSX is no longer with us. God what a douche)

Anyway it seems you're likely to get a thousand different responses, because everyone likes something different about each version Tetris.

I personally haven't played much other than the NES version and Tetris 2 on the NES. I still play the NES version very often and love it. And no, because it doesn't have a battery it will not save your high score. I generally go for points vs. levels, and have achieved about 350,000 on the NES version.
