View Full Version : Killed my PSOne trying to add a modchip, any help?

The disc doesn't spin, the unit powers on fine, can look at the memory card, etc... but the disc does not spin when turned on, or when I hit "cd player" from the menu.

I removed the entire modhip (desoldered) and doublechecked everything, I can't see ANYTHING that would have possibly gone wrong (burned anything, anything blown, solder drops, mis-solders, NOTHING).

I'm just wondering if that is what would happen if I did screw something up. Seems like no matter what I would have done wrong, the disc would at least still spin upon turning the system on. I've double checked the laser apparatus wires, and they're fine (no damage, properly seated)

Maybe you dinked the little switch that tells the system that the lid is closed, and now it always thinks that it's open.

Maybe a stupid question, but did you check if it worked before you started soldering?
Did you solder it 100% correct? Any possibility that the solderiron got in contact with something else on the motherboard?

Yes, Yes, and Yes :)

There IS a possibility I killed something on the motherboard, but I inspected carefully with a flashlight everywhere I came close to soldering, and it all looked brand new.

Maybe I did hit the switch saying the lid was closed, any help on that issue? I'll have to go take it apart again and check it out. It just seems to be functioning perfectly fine except for the factthat the cd doesn't even start spinning.

Man, I'm gonna be pissed if I soldered it perfectly but knowcked a disc tray switch loose and now have to resolder those 6 tiny friggin wires.

I'm not really of much help here, although I can relate. I tried doing that a few years back with mine and fried it. Well, I didn't do the soldering, a friend did. Still he soldered in the chip something like 3 times and he said it seemed perfect every time. I can't remember if mine refused to power on at all, or if it turned on then refused to spin. I ended up leaving it there for him to play with, and I think we eventually tossed it. Our official conclusion was that the chip was defective, though we never really figured it out.

Like I said, I'm probably not helping much, but perhaps there's just something inside the PSOne (after all, as you know there are tons of TINY points that could get messed up) that goes really easily when you're trying to insert a mod chip. Maybe something where the heat itself screws it up (i.e. they don't need to be actually touched)?

Just some thoughts / comments. Hope you solve the problem soon.

Edit: Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure mine did the same thing (turn on, no spin) but I can't speak for the memory card.

Did u remember to connect the laser cord to the mobo again? Or double check that its sitting tight.

I think it's the button on the lid that detects if the lid is closed. My Saturn had the same problem, and I just fixed it on my own. I hope thats the problem for you.

Nope, I gave it a try, pushed the button down with a paper clip while it was on, while turning on, etc... Even took the cover off and pushed the button directly with the cover still off, nada. It's fried. Ah well.

Offshoot question. Can burned PS1 games play in a modded PS2? This is really starting to piss me off since I just want to play DDR games that weren't evn released in this damn country. And my old ps1 system IS modded, but I can't get any of the new cd's I burned to work on it, so I can't tell if I'm burning them incorrectly, or if the mod in it is so OLD (first model ps1) that the game backups are detecting the outdated mod chip and refusing to play.

I haven't done any of this backup crap in roughly 10 years now I think. I guess this is what I get for "playing by the rules" :(

Yes, but I think it variates from modchip to modchip how you start them. On my modchip i have to insert the game and press the resetbutton twice to play burned/import PSX games.

If you dare risk moding your PS2 (It's very dangerous and complicated if you don't know what you're doing) it should play backup PSX games.

As for the dead drive i suggest you try using a multimeter to verify solid connections. Even though it maynot look like you've damaged the traces doesn't mean you haven't.

I wouldn't mind buying a pre-modded PSTwo system, but I sure as hell wasn't about to spend $80+ on a pre-modded PSOne system :)

I've heard PS1 compatibility in a chipped PS2 CAN be shakey. There has also been some running debate in these forums among myself and another concerning DDR 3rd Mix and DDR 4th Mix. I have sealed copies and play duplicates, which work fine. (I have a first run PS1 with a standard 4 wire modchip) The debate comes that these games will not run correctly on a modded system, I dissagree as the source I got the duplicates from did 1-to-1 copies. Yes, I know there are null parts in a PS1 disc which is why they can't be copied perfectly and why you need a modchip - I mean they did a standard disc copy with the original. A solid answer for this still hasn't been resolved.

All PSX burned games on my modded PS2 work fine. I guess it just depends on what kind you get.

That's what I meant, there are so many different hardware / modchip revisions on the PS2.

Have you considered StepMania plus a PSX->PC adapter or PC dance pad? Also PSX emulators can run straight off a CD...

for the psone, there are little surface mount fuses on the motherboard, if you use google to find them, test them with a multimeter.

if you dont fix it, can i grab it off you for the price of shipping, and maybe a few dollars for the effort?
