Wow, I was braced for lots of hate on that one....where is it?

Okay, I'll jump in for ya...

Boo! Boo! Boo!!!!

Did that help? Maybe I'll try again later.

I think most of the bad vibes were burned away in the first week, what with the belief that the game is too easy. I'm starting to wonder how much better these guys are than me; I have finished the game and currently have a 2-star rating, but I still have to find all those star coins throughout the game. Currenly, only the first two worlds are completely cleaned out.

It's a longstanding Mario tradition that if you want to barrel through to the ending, the games will help you, via warp rooms or secret passages to the end and whatnot. The real thrill lies in discovering all the secrets, finding all those coins and secret blocks and bonus worlds. Looking over the entire game world, I'd say New Super Mario is a pretty big game.

The pace was fairly brisk, but there are just enough tough spots, and and endless array of surprises. to keep me hooked. I won't be finished collecting all the star coins for some time.

NSMB has beome one of my all-time favorite video games and considering how picky I am, that is no easy task. I LOVE this game. I cannot get enough of it. I'm at World 8 with Luigi and have collected all the star coins in Worlds 1-2 and 4. Anyone else think about picking up the Nintendo Player's Guide? I dunno, when I'm playing a 2D/3D Mario game if I like to have maps and whatnot. Guess it all started when my dad bought me the NPG for SMB3 back in the day. LOL

:D
Ive gotten more playtime out of this game than alsmost any console game i have purchased this year.

I suppose my hardcore skills have deteriorated over time as well because NSMB, to me, has a fair share of tricky levels and attaining all the coins can be a real pain in the ass.

My only true complaint is how I have to reach certain points on the world map in order to save. Maybe I don't want to put the game on sleep mode or standby or whatever it's called. Maybe I just want to quit and play something else without losing my progress.

SPOILER

Once you beat the game once, you'll be able to save at any time via the map screen pause menu.

I played this game for the first time today at a friends house and I'm quite impressed. I'm picking it up once I get a DS lite. So far I have Worms, Bust-A-Move, and Bomberman. These 4 titles alone I believe will provide many, many hours of entertainment.

I just got 3 stars beside my save file last night...and I still cannot stop playing. Not looking for coins or alternate exits really makes running through the stages all willy-nilly a blast.

Mini-mario has got to be my favorite new power, it seems to totally change the play.

I do not know what most of the reviewers problems are but I love the music and I think it fits great in the mario series.

I still haven't collected all the star coins. Granted, I haven't played much this week due to writing for the Ghibli blog, but still. There's a lot of game if you're willing to actually play through and find everything. As long as this doesn't become the only Super Mario game on the DS. I still have bad memories of Nintendo dropping the ball on GBA.

The early backlash over New Mario being too easy will be soon forgotten. I can remember, with the proper skills, beating Super Mario World in about 10 minutes.

I'm loving every minute of this great mario 2-D platformer, for it being easy yes in some parts but them darn gold coins are killing me...some are extremely hard to find, I'm only up to world 3 level 5...the first castle level in world 3 took me for ever, I still can't figure out how to get that darn 2nd gold coin in that particular stage.....err  x_x

This game is giving me a gaming joy, which I have not felt for YEARS. It's 100% pure fun.

I bought this with my Lite. It's managed to peel me away from my 360 for a few days now. It's a little easy, though - seeing as how in 2 days, I managed to get to world 7, and still have 32 marios left.

God, I missed 2-D Mario! Anyone who says 2-D gaming is dead, hand them this title.

The mini games are even fun.

i like the game, but i think the controls are a tad sloppy. that is probably what kept it from feeling like the original SMB series the most

I played this yesterday. I've been trying to put the money together to buy it but after playing it I think Mario moves too slow and the controls arent very responsive. I'll wait until I can get a better deal on it. (Good luck with that)

The controll feel (physics) is almost exactly like the the first SMB. Thats the first thing I noticed when I started playing and thought it was an extremely cool detail.

I am glad to see someone else say that, I thought the same thing. I still like the game but they wa people were talking about how great the game was I was starting to wonder if it was the DS controls that were giving me problems and not the game itself.

I have this as a rental right now. It is indeed great fun. Perhaps it falls slightly short of the epic qualities of SMB3 or SMW, but considering it's the first side scroller featuring Mario in over ten years, such comparisons are trivial. But it is true that the new abilities aren't terribly useful, fun as they may be. (It's such a pain to get a mini-mushroom when you need one!)

I got three stars after two straight days of playing, but I ceratinly wouldn't mind playing through this one repeatedly. If nothing else, it has that quality.

(I must confess I did use a FAQ to find some of the secret exits, but I quite suspect I would have stumbled upon them eventually. They're hidden well enough that you won't find them right away, but not so well that there isn't some indication of where they are. Nicely done.)

Now: Does anyone know where the music for this game can be downloaded from? I am particularly enamoured with the a capella version of the SMB theme from the trampoline mingame. (Yes, I've seen that other live a capella bit already.) Some of the music from World 8 is great too.

Jorpho

Y'know, I think I'll just whip together some MP3s myself.

It occurs to me that one of the most appealing aspects of the game is its aesthetic of simplicity. There's no new cutscene at the end when you finish everything, there's no new minigames to be unlocked; the only thing you get is three stars next to your save file. The only reason to get those three stars is because you want those three stars. It's quite beautiful in a way.

The game is full of things like that, like coins you don't have to get unless you actually want them, not to mention the elaborate flagpole jumps that get set up in some levels.

I'll admit it does seem rather odd that the score seems to be entirely functionless, aside from a means of tracking how many times you've played through the levels. It might have been nice to see some kind of "score attack" or something, but perhaps that would have ruined the whole simplicity idea.

I was starting to think the same thing because nobody seemed to agree with me. I still play the hell out of SMB so perhaps I was expecting a little too much out of this new one. However, if you consider Nintendos intention with this game, perhaps they slowed Mario down to allow the former gamers to feel like they never lost their touch.

And you can get that a capella mario theme from the Mario Sunshine soundtrack.

Turns out there's a secret Challenge Mode hidden in the game that you can access via a code on the map screen...

Figures something like that wouldn't be original.

Well, at least I can get a HQ version of it now. Could someone point me in the direction of said soundtrack?

Neat! I wonder how this was found. It gives me hope that there may be one or two other things hidden for us to find, as well.

I'm disappointed with that so-called "Challenge" mode. No back scrolling? I rarely scroll back anyway. So it's useless and I don't even notice it missing.

Except, how would it work in levels that NEED back scrolling like the final castle and other castles? I guess there could be a small challenge there.

I'm hoping in my heart that there's another hidden mode with more enemies. Want a real harder mode. Not just a limit to scrolling.

More enemies plz! Then it would be a harder game. Whoo.

I bought the game and love it. However, I played through the game in 3 days. I only have 1 star. I don't think the game is too short or easy. We've grown up playing Mario Games.. we have skillz, I mean how long would the game have to be to make it seem long.

My only real complaint is there is no real motivation to play through the game again. Collect coins for what? For a fricken 'wallpaper'. Give me a real reward for playing or at least something engaging like the extra levels in Super Mario Deluxe and the Lost Levels as an unlockable.

Honestly, after beating this in 3 days I bought Super Princess Peach, and really, it's more engaging. It's 'easier' than NSMB, but it keeps you coming back.

Everyone should check out that title as well.

I've already completed Super Princess Peach. 100% everything. Except one strange elusive item in Toads shop that still shows ????. Very weird. I have the star by my file though. So I know it's done.

Maybe I'm supposed to play some of the Toad games to get that item to be available.

I got my girlfriend a DS, a few weeks back when it launched here in the UK, and once NSMB, arrived i got that for her too, and she's playing to death, she's not a big gamer!..

But she likes NSMB, and i can't even get a game on it! LOL

Is it me or do woman seem to like Handheld's more than the consoles?.. ;)

Yeah, you have to finish every level of the toad games, and do all 8 puzzles.

THEN you get the last item.

hmm... maybe there's something to that. I just bought NSMB too and the fiance is enjoying it as much as I am.... and she's NOT a gamer... after two or three hours she was 'stuck' on level 1-2 ;)

But the couple hours I've played of it so far I am really enjoying 8-)

I have defeated bowser in Super Princess Peach. I'm now going back and playing the additional unlocked levels.

And it's these little rewards and unlockables that keep me coming back to SPP. You have to at least play and 'find' items here. I think the buying 'wallpapers' with the coins in NSMB is a bit lame.

I do like that there is a challenge code, and that you can play as Luigi. Minimal, but nice touches. I just hope there is more to this game that can be unlocked and will be released.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great game. But after seeing all the nice additions they did for the Super Mario Advance series on the GBA, it just seems a little lackluster here.

They should have done something like the Rockman/Megaman games where you get something special if you have one of the Super Mario Advance titles in the GBA slot.

This is a very good game I bought it on July 7, 2006 with a DS Lite. I got throught it in a couple of day and could not put it down. I definitely recomend buying this game if you like platformers and mario.
