From Kotaku:
This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for — pure 2D platforming action and it’s looking white hot. No water squirting backpacks, no go-karts, no role-playing, just straight up running and jumping. Nintendo has published some new screens and tons of art work for New Super Mario Bros. and it instills so much old school confidence.
Hammer Bros., Bloopers, Pirhana Plants, they’re all here. Whet your appetite for no frills Mario-style platforming shipping May 7 for the Nintendo DS. Great for waiting in lines at E3!

It's not a classic Mario style game, but it's got the look and feel of a classic 2D Nintendo game. It's a little on the easy side, but it's fun.

I have had my eye on this game since it was shown with the DS at E3, it's looking great.
I would love it if they would rename it Super Mario 4. That would be awesome. Any word on the storyline? Is it set in the mushroom kingdom? It seems as though it might be. Are the koopa kids in the game?

Oh look, Mario's standing on nothing (probably a result of shooting off a fire flower - I didn't realize those were phosphorous grenades!). Grainy looking (probably dithered) fish too. But hey, it'll be great.

Would have to be Super Mario Bros 5. Confused? That little launch game for the Super Famicom involving a dungaree plumber and a dinosaur was called Super Mario Bros 4 in Japan ;)

It is on the easy site until world 7 and 8. It gets harder the second time through. Levels 7,8,9 in each world are a lot more challenging. The bosses are also more difficult the second time though.
I would say it is more Yoshi's Island than Super Mario World, but it has elements in both. Well worth the purchase, it is a great game, even if it is a little easy. Besides you do need something until May 7, and it might as well be a Mario-style game.

I thought SMB5 was that Mario vs Donkey platformin' game. Have they announced what screwball use of the stylus will be forced on the game?
I actually meant SMB 5. I realized it right after I posted it, and didnt bother to change it. It really is super mario brothers 5 though. Or would it be 6? Yoshi's Island is its own series right? Or is Super Mario 64 super mario 5? I am gonna look at this new game like its SMB 5. Yeah, that will work...I think.

Finally. I love the newer Mario games (yes even Sunshine) but it'll be good to get back to basics. Am I the only one who is having some trouble warming up to the polygonal 2D graphics though? I would've preferred the standard animated look of the other games. A little dissapointing. :/

I think I know where you are coming from. While I am sure the game will look pretty good come May (remember, the final few months are when all the little touches are added), I would have preferred sprites. They look cleaner, they look better. While I can understand the move to polygons (I'm sure we are going to see some neat effects and plenty of new moves and gameplay additions as a result), you just can't beat a good sprite.

I'd really consider "Yoshi's Island" a *YOSHI* game and not really a Mario Brothers game.
I think that game would have sold well enough on its own without having to have the "Super Mario World 2" tacked onto the end.

According to my Kmart ad at my store, it arrives on the 17th. But has that * next to it saying "Release date subject to change". I am assuming my store won't get it until the 17th. So I'll probably go hunting on Tuesday to see if I can get it earlier. I'll lose my 10% discount, but I don't care as long as I have it. And if I can't find it at GameStop or EB, at least I'll still have my Kmart to fall back on. Either way, I'm going hunting on Tuesday.

Nope. Right chain, that's all there are.
Game ships today, so if a store near you has it overnighted (Best Buy, Circuit City, the EBGames/Gamestop family all do this with AAA first party titles) it'll be in by tomorrow. Large general merchandise chains are probably going to be a few days delayed (Walmart is occasionally an exception to this).

sweet deal the gamestop near me does price matching, so if you bring in the ad, they will make a price adjustment... WOOT... just a heads up.. all you need is the ad from Circuit City.

Picked it up yesterday and am at the beginning of World 5.
Awesome game! Must have for DS owners. Although it looks and sounds new, it does indeed play as a mixture of new and old (which is a good thing!).
I just tried out the multiplayer with a friend at work, and I must say that I'm impressed. The 2 player VS game is suprisingly fun.

My local Kmart had it in the case yesterday so I picked it up. I didn't have a lot of time to play it but I did get to the 2nd world. IMHO it's like a hybird between SMB1/SMB3 with a sprinkle of SMB Deluxe. The graphics and sound are awesome and the minigames are pretty fun. Haven't tried the multiplayer yet but looking forward to it.

I'm annoyed that I can't save whenever I want to. It seems like there's a finite number of times that you can save, because if you go back and beat a castle level a second time, you don't get to save a second time.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I'm a little underwhelmed so far.
It's supposed to harken back to classic NES Mario games plus some spiffy updates, but then they put in all the modern 2D platform cliches, like multiple paths in a level, and backtracking for collectables, which ruins it a little. I'm kinda backtracked-out after finishing Princess Peach. If they really wanted it to be old school, they should've taken out the star coins, and just made it so you run from the beginning to the end without worrying about "missing" something.

Halfway through World 2 right now. I'm having a blast with this game. It's been entirely TOO long since the last 2-D Mario platformer.
Snapple, I was a bit concerned at first too, but then I figured that once you beat the game once, you might be able to save at any time. It would kind of be silly of Nintendo not to include a save feature to save your collectables if they expect you to backtrack through the levels later on.

I'm playing it now. A little on the easy side so far, but so much fun to play!
Edge had an interview with Mayimoto (sp?) last month where he implied that New SMB would be a little on the easy side. It is supposed to appeal to people who may have played the original SMB and then got out of gaming as it became more complex.
My thoughts? It's definitely easy so far (but so was the original SMB in the early stages), but it is pure bliss to play. I have waited a long time for this and it seems to be worth the wait.
Okay, I'm just being lazy, but does anyone have a link to a good site for Super Paper Mario info?

So, did any of you NSMB owners happen to purchase your game from Circuit City? The Sunday add specifically stated that it wouldn't be out on store shelves until 5 PM on the 17th, but I've heard conflicting arguments, especially at CAG. Some are saying it would be out no shelves today (16th).
Basically, I'm asking in hopes to save myself some gas from an uneccessary car trip tommorrow. I can't wait until 5 PM, as I'll be at work then and won't get out until 11:00.

Oh, yeah! I completely forgot they named one of them "Morton Koopa, Jr." Damn, that got dated fast. Free nickles to anyone who can remember the '80s pop celebrity being riffed.
(* Side note: Back in high school, simple "insult" games on computers were popular, where basically you and the computer trade insults. I actually did write a short BASIC program on an Apple IIe featuring Mort. Okay, it was a boring class.)

And Daniel, Morton Downey Jr. was more than an 80's pop celebrity...he was an idol (well, ok, maybe just to me...but I spent many a night up watching his show when I shouldn't have been)! I kind of wish he were still around, I bet he'd be a lot of fun on TV today...

There was a letter in the most recent issue of Nintendo Power asking about the Koopa Kids being in New SMB. Nintendo said that the Koopa Kids are not in the game, and the reason that Takashi Tezuka said they were going to be in an interview was due to a mistranslation or a misunderstanding. He probably thought that the interviewer was asking about "Bowser Jr"...who seems to be the only Koopa Kid there is as far as Nintendo is concerned. :/
I'm still really looking forward to buying this game. I just don't have a DS yet! :P

Picked it up last night, spent about an hour with it,.... and it's OK. Just OK so far. I've only gone through the first two worlds, but in general, I've found it easy and predictable. Most of the hidden stuff hasn't been terribly well hidden and the star coins are all pretty straight-forward.
That said, I found it enjoyable and expect it to get more difficult/challenging/less predictable as it goes on. My only question is, like in SMBW, do the level "dots" on the map help indicate multiple exits, or do you just have to guess? Maybe that's part of the challenge!
Simply Dave

I'm not finding this game *that* easy. Extra lives are abundant and I'm never going to run out, but I'm up to World 5 now and I bet I've died 15 times at least. Most of them were from dumb jumps, but still...
