Today I was cleaning some NES games and i noticed a region code i've never seen or heard about before. The game is Chessmaster and it have this code: NES-EM-GPS. On the back of the cart there is a SCN code, which means its from Scandinavia, but I have another copy of Chessmaster too which have NES-EM-SCN infront and SCN back.

So.. anyone know where the GPS code is from?

You're talking about European games, right?

Could it be Germany?

Europe indeed :) I dont think its from Germany, hence the SCN code at back. NES games from Germany usualy uses NOE (Nintendo of Europe) as code.

SCN is indeed Scandinavian, but GPS?

Where is this GPS found? Box, front of cart, manual? It's not clear which of these you mean.

Also, semi-related: "As a wholly owned subsidiary, Nintendo of Europe, based in Grossostheim, Germany, was established in 1990 and serves as headquarters for Nintendo's operations in Europe." Benchmark for dating on NOE, I guess?

Tones: Strange, another Bergsala (SCN) game with GPS?

Ed Oscuro: I only have the box for the one who says NES-EM-SCN. The GPS code is loose. The GPS one doesnt say "European Version" either. It can be from Germany, but then the SCN code at the back doesnt make much sense :(

Yes, we already figured that out. ;0

I see the pictures now, front label which is what I thought you meant (but couldn't be 100% sure). Thanks, jajaja!

Maybe G for Germany, P for Poland, S for .. ? It'd have to be one of these:

Slovakia
Slovenia
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland

Germany is called Deutschland in Germany. Wouldn't it then be listed as D? Or is everything listed in its English equivalent?

Almost all german NES games got english text, but the manuals and boxes (a few boxes got english text) are in german. The warninglabel on the back is also in german and sometimes german/spanish.

I have the GPS on one of my SNES games: "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island". I bought this game new back in the days. The manual is only in English, and so is the back of the box. Maybe I can take a better look at the box and the inserts tomorrow or later this week.

That would be great :)

GPS might be Greenland.

OTOH, maybe that cart with GPS on the front and SCN on the back is simply a sticker mismatch(like some canadian 'megadrive' carts), or maybe that's not the original back for that cart.

It is possible, but i highly doubt it. Since 2 other users also have a GPS with SCN at the back here. Waiting to see if the box also have GPS code. I know that Bergsala sometimes made 2 versions of a game, like Shadowgate with both swedish and english text. The swedish version have a SWE/SWE code, but i dont know if the english version have a SCN code. Maybe this is where GPS come in?

I know I've seen a scandinavian release of Legend of Zelda which had GPS somewhere (either on the manual or somewhere on the cart). The thing with that one was that it was sealed, but had been opened. What's strange with that was that Bergsala never manufactured sealed game for some reason. There were always empty boxes on the shelves and the game store employees had to put the game and manual in the box when they were bought (theft protection, I believe).

Indeed. Bergsala never sealed the games. I've seen sealed Zelda European Version copies, but afaik they are from Spain. I remember Ellos when they sold NES games. They put a sticker over the lid for protection.

jajaja: What country are you in? You said before that you are not from Sweden, but that Ellos tag is in swedish, so I'm just a little confused.
