I totally forgot about the large drop bonuses that could be obtained on the stages that long chains set up. ^^; Just the same I'd never get near those scores. On the other hand I was trying to get as many 50k few second completion bonuses as possible but as the scores show there's no way those can compete with the mass drop bonuses.

I did this at work, so I can't update the site until later, but here's the scores, in a much less readable format. The format is [Player RawScore NormScore]. If your name does not appear on any list, it means that I don't have a score for you.

04-21-2006, 05:16 PM
You know, I couldn't remember playing this last year - so I dug up last year's results and it seems it was the round that Dr. Morbis and I had a bye. LOL

I submitted last night because I had enough of this game. It's cool but SO unforgiving and after my high score performance (having it all come apart at the beginning of the final stage) I kept getting hung up at the earlier parts of stage 2. That was enough frustration for me. Good game though, it's like Road Fighter (another unforgiving game) on steroids (http://klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=9335).

I don't want to give away my score but if it was last year I would have taken second place in the round. ;)

jcheatle

Is level 4 the final stage? Because I'm finding that to be darn near impossible. I can get about 3/5 of the way through (to the fire part) but by then I've got no time left. Ah well. Considering I'd never played it before, I think I had an admirable score.

I totally agree that it's a fun but unforgiving game. I half lucked into my score then spent 3 hours either resetting it in the first or second round... or coming up 10-20K short. Ugh.

I'd like it known also that if I beat Foodmonster's score, I'm going to curse my lack of time to play Simpsons... as I would have won the whole thing. :) Either way, congrats to whoever wins between David and Foodmonster and I'm looking forward to the next tourney.

Although, I've gotten to the same spot where I ended the game there with 150K less points, so I'm going to hope that you didn't know the best ways to rake in the points.

Crap as well. I didn't think it would be the last (who makes a 4 stage game really? It obviously had to be 5). I'm interested to see somebody's INP of how they did it. I just couldn't figure out how to take the sharp turns in 4 (or the beginning of 2). And yeah, Foodmonster beat me (I had 402K), so I don't feel so bad now. :)

489860

I have been slain - 448,985.

I got about 2/3rds through level 5 (which is the last level, you drive up into a big plane and escape at the end). I would have done better but there are an assload of trees early on and when braking hard to attempt to pick up the one and only sawblade upgrade at the start of the stage (which I overran and missed just the same) I ran right into one... then another... then the reduced speed / jump (from losing my upgrades) began to kick my ass in the field part in the center. The game wasted some time when it couldn't decide where to drop me as well. LOL *left* "hmm.. no.." *right* "..okay!" Then again all those problems came from me not backing off at the start of the stage. :/

Things are going to be VERY close in this round and the inp's are going to be interesting.

YEAH!

Sweet. Nice score David. Atleast you can know that you got further in the game then I. I just could not get past the end of the 4th level with all the pathways and the such. The best way to get points is by getting the front saws and cutting down the bushes on the road. They give you just as many points as destroying a helicopter or truck, 10K. I dont know if you were aware of that, but if you werent, I'm glad because with a score like that and that bit of info, you would've beat me.

I'm looking forword to the next tourny!

(are we going to keep discussion in this thread, or make a new one for every tourny?)

No we will just keep using this thread. There's no reason in my mind to keep creating new ones. It's bad enough that I will have to make a new sign-up thread for each tournament.

And congrats on the win.

The best way to get points is by getting the front saws and cutting down the bushes on the road. They give you just as many points as destroying a helicopter or truck, 10K.

I realized that the second day I was playing, before that I would actually slow down to knock out the trucks before realizing that I'd get more points for just driving by them and grabbing a higher bonus at the end. After that I began to watch the score counter closely to figure out if there were any more score bottlenecks I was falling into. As for the helicopters, I got rid of them since they were more of a nuisance than anything. LOL

Eventually I figured that if I could get through the stages as fast as possible then I could more than likely grab higher / more end of stage bonuses than anyone else. Not to mention the extra points to be had within the later stages. I too figured that the fire part of stage 4 would stop a lot of people - it's an outright pain in the ass. Well after getting to stage 5 and seeing all the possible points and getting as far as I did even with the screwups at the start, I figured that's where I'd gain my lead. (I'm also pretty sure there's some kind of multiplier once you complete the 5th stage) However all my games after that usually peaked around stage 2 due to stupid mistakes early on. To me, going for a high score, there's no sense in continuing on after crashing out that early - far too much time is lost trying to rebuild your arsenal.

OK folks, e-mails sent out to the people on the mailing list. I sent PMs to the people not on the list, but this is the only time that I will do it. If you fail to add yourself to the list and therefore aren't notified of the next round's game and therefore don't submit a score because you "didn't know", that's your bad.

So the first round of the shmups challenge has begun. A couple of notes about this tournament:

1. I have 37 players signed up for this one. The top 16 will go on to round 2. If you get eliminated in the first round but are having a good time, then please keep playing along and submitting scores and I will add them to your cumulative totals. Same as the last tourney.

2. Prizes. For this tournament I am going to award 10,000, 5,000, and 2,000 respectively. Point bonuses will stay the same at 50, 25, and 10 since we will again have 5 rounds.

InsaneDavid just finished up a FAQ on getting MAME running for newbs, and I will be posting it on the league site tonight.

Got questions? Got answers. Just post em here.

Soooooo... Xevious is the first game in the Shmup challenge. Just sodding typical that we start off with a game I don't like LOL . It's not a bad game, just the music drives me mad! That, and the fact that I suck at it :D

I'm struggling to make a dent in this game, I keep dying at the level 1 boss... and barely even taking out the pre-set high score.

Looks like you guys don't have any competition from me in the first round.

EDIT: scratch that, I just got a hi score :D a very good one indeed.I dunno how I managed to do it, but I just had a miracle run.

Not only did I beat the high score, but I obliterated the #1 hi-score for MAME Xevious on Twin Galaxies.

Well, I'm not going to win this tourny. I am 100% terrible at this game. I've played more then a dozen times and I cant even break the pre-set high score. Its a shame too, I love me some SHMUPS, but I guess I'm used to fast paced ones full of... I dunno.... action? Ah well, I'll still be submitting scores. Maybe I can hang on to the top spot even with my inevitable failing at this game.

The closest you get is when you destroy a citadel, or find the hidden flags in the game. Destroying a citadel gives you loadsa points, and finding a hidden flag gives you an extra life and 5000 points.

And my score is pretty damn high on this now I know what I'm doing. I think I pretty much got this game in the bag.

Here's a pic of one of my earlier runs... I won't say how many points I've got in my most recent ones, but it's a fair bit higher than this one.

Just thought I'd size up my competitors.

Yup, the Sol Citadels give you what, 2000 for exposure and 2000 for destruction? And the flags are a nice little cross reference to one of my favorite Namco games, New Rally-X.

It isn't too bad imo. If the ship speed were any faster then the game would be way too easy. Ground targets would require less prioritization and the A.I. offensive would be a breeze to dance around.

I def rolled my eyes at the announcement of Xevious, just because I find the multitasking between the bomb target and whatever is flying at me in the air slightly disorienting. Especially when stuff starts really coming at you (God do I hate those black blobs). Jibba is obviously trying to seperate the men from the boys early in this contest with this game (I think I might end up a boy come Wednesday ;P). /obligatory complaining about game choices in tournament. ;)

I liked this game because you are challenged by the sow-moving ship and the fact that you have to both shoot airborne enemies, and bomb the ground. I also think that this game gets dogged because the home console ports are not very good.

Next game will be more fast paced and whatnot. Don't worry, I cover all of the bases.

Agreed, most (if not all) got rid of the difficulty rampup that constantly mixed up the gameplay of the arcade version.

Jug's score is very good. Better than even anything we got at YakYak when playing the game for the Lleague there (so yes I have a slight advantage having suffered this game already for a week in the past) and there are some VERY good players aside from me taking part.

Hey, I've been having a bit of a problem running this under MAME (using the provided version). The first time I loaded everything it worked great and I played for some time, but the second time everything ran at about 2x speed. I tried toggling the f10 key (I believe that's the right one) but it puts everything about 10x speed.

I'm running this under XP x64 edition on a laptop with a AMD Turion chip... Ideas? Or is it an OS issue?

I deleted and reloaded MAME to no effect....

I can't believe all the complaining. I think Xevious is a great game! Who needs power-ups? ...Oh snap, looking at that score above it looks like maybe I do. :)

I always thought the NES port was pretty decent. Especially at a time when most arcade ports were not very good. You folks really don't think so?

Bring MAME32 up. Select "Options" then "Reset to default..." Usually I'd say to go into the "Default Game Options..." and check the frame skipping under the Advanced tab. Usually something there has been messed with. Automatic should be UNchecked and "Draw every frame" selected. Other options should be...

Use DirectDraw
Switch Resolutions to fit
Switch Color Depths to fit

Everything else UNchecked.

Resolutions should all be Auto, Stretch using hardware should be checked with 4:3 aspect ratio as the default.

Jesus H, Juganawt... I mean, I knew my score was bad... but let's just say I'm taking a reverse Puzzle Bobble on this one. There goes all my karma from that. :(

I played this quite a bit, but I think my complete lack of skill re: shmups doomed me to failure. I barely broke the default high score, and I'd bet money most everybody passed me also. Oh well... do my best on the others and try to stay as high as possible in the world rankings I guess.

I dunno, my score blows and there was a lot of groaning in the thread, this could be a round of a couple huge scores and then a tight filing of subpar ones at the bottom. I'm clawing at 100k right now if anyone cares, not feeling well though so I may submit in a few minutes.

OK, did all that, still running shitty. But, I did get it to work eventually -- there was a default option to use some sort of timing (it had an acronym, but I am at work and don't have it in front of me). When I unchecked that, it ran at normal speed...

Unfortunately I don't have enough time to post a decent score now :( With that crappy 2x speed I could only manage about 30k...

Thanks for the help!

Hmm, that's strange, "Use RDTSC Timing System" under the Miscellaneous tab should be checked normally. However, you said you were using a 64bit class of processor and RDTSC (Read Time-Stamp Counter) accesses the CPU cycle counter for game timing. So it makes perfect sense that it was throwing off your game speed. Since the default setting is to have it turned on, that's why a reinstall didn't fix anything.

Blargh, I haven't even had time to play the game, so I'm going to have to bow out of this round. Sorry.

Wow... with so many people ducking out or having low scores... this is my chance to fix the Puzzle Bobble gap... two hours to go.. time to play. :)

I'm not surprised there's an issue with MAME handling the 64 bit processor -- early versions of the SuSE 10 I have installed as my second OS had similar problems with clock management (system clock ran too fast, along with power management). XP x64 can emulate a 32 bit environment but I guess some things don't work so well underneath it.

Anyway, at least it's fixed now :)

With *looks at watch* eight minutes to go I figure you've submitted or haven't and won't have time for another run after this, so I'll show my hand.

I ended up with 122,210 and also submitted an .inp file. Granted the high score game for me is no where near as entertaining as my previous high score (117,210) as in it I didn't reveal a single flag - they all were on the other side of the screen from where I was bombing. In the lower scoring game I uncovered and grabbed three of the flags from the four locations I passed.

I JUST submitted my score, glad I put the last couple runs in tonight to see if I could best myself before submitting. :) Here's hoping for second. LOL

Well, I got 139K, so I've got you beat. I'm surprized I ended up getting that score, I played so many times in the beginning where I couldn't break the 40K set score. I started to find a few of the towers because the bombing cursor blinks when you are over them. I never found a flag, but oh well. At the end of that game, I was getting to the second boss with 3 lives, but I just died and died and died really cheaply there, so I could've gotten more. It just took me roughly 10 games to get a good score going without dying before earning atleast 20K

Ugh, glad that game is over.

I don't think it can drop far enough to get my score in...somehow I just don't think 37510 is top 16 quality :P

Hooray for me I actually beat someone, sorry scooter. I just wish I had more time at home the last few days to give this one. I tried at work but there is no way of getting high scores with a keyboard.

Hey guys. Gapporin is going to run a console high score league for us, so if you guys are jonesin' for some extra play time, then sign up for his deal. It will be called "The Scoreboard" and will be located here. (http://jibbajaba.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=4)

Stay tuned for more details from the man himself!

I missed the deadline! :(

Er....

JibbaJaba?

Can I still participate in the SHMUPS tournament?

I didn't get a chance to submit my score for Xevious because of some work related issues.

Am I still in the running? Or should I just call it quits.

Please let me know. Thanks.

I'm not "complaining" per say. I'll play whatever game is chosen. I just think Xevious is awkward in certain aspects or just plain sucks in others.

It looks like we're going to have a tight grouping around 100k. I could only squeeze a little bit over that. Fuck those bullet shooting black blobs.

Meh, I think that I pretty much phoned it in with Xevious. I couldn't even crack the default top score.

Bah. I wish this wasn't held during the last 2 weeks of the semester. Didn't even get a chance to fire the game up.

You know, I don't care much for Xevious but I like that it was chosen. Why? Because if the game lineup, even in a special tournament like this, has a healthy amount of variety then you have to be good at ALL types of shooters to place well.

If you didn't submit a score for this round, then you can't stay in the tournament, but you should still play along to keep your ranking up.

I will tabulate the scores tonight and pick a new game. I am just tired right now.

Scores have been posted for Xevious, as well. Rankings will be updated later.
