BUT I will mention the Wii and use it as a prime example but one of the many reasons it will be the cartridge based games values that will plummet to next to nothing and NOT the CD/DVD based games.

Very few ppl -even hardcore gamers- are going to pay $80.00 for a game they can play on the Wii for a couple bucks OR............... for free on emu?<

That part of your argument I disagree with.

I can guarantee you that if wii's virtual console is successful cd based games will eventually get the same treatment. If Nintendo (or sony or xbox) can make money from reselling their snes classics without having to remanufacture them I guarantee you that they will try to do the same with their gamecube titles.

And then you've got gamesquestdirect reprinting cd based titles as soon as they get to be worth some money.

And yes you'll be playing cd based games on emu one day too.

The point is, there are just as many if not more threats to the future value of cd based games as cartridge based. At the end of the day, it's just a format. If the companies involved can make some extra money from reissues in either physical or virtual form, you better believe they will do it.

I know I had a bitch of a time finding a copy of Wizardry for the PS2. Is that game a lot easier to find in other parts of the country or is it border line rare?

Yeah, it's border line rare. Wizardry used to sell for quite a bit on Ebay a year or two ago ($50-$60 complete) but now it looks like it's selling for around half that. Wouldn't be surprised if it goes back up soon though considering that it's an Atlus title and also a pretty good game.

I remember not too long ago someone here was running off PS2 print run numbers and according to him, Wizardry received a very low run. Although I have no idea where they got these numbers from and if they were legit.

i would love to find some print run numbers for PS2 games. That would kinda make finding future collectible items that much easier to secure. I've pretty much gotten ahold of all the big ones that sell for good loot on ebay so far. whether or not they will go up or down i have no idea, but its better to have them now than wish you bought them when they go for $100+ later on. I learned that the hard way when i lent out all my saturn games (including Guardian Heroes...DAMN IT) to a former friend only to get demolished along with the trailor he was living in....oh how i regret it.

Honestly I'm not trying to single you out or say that there's anything wrong with this but this is the kind of thinking that assures me that there probably won't be many more truely rare games. Back when the Atari and NES consoles were out people purchased games to play them and if there was an odd ball release by a little know company it MAY have eventually become rare. Now there are just too many release lists people who study them looking for possible future rarities. Too many people nowadays purchase games strictly because they think the game may be rare some day.

Is that something akin to how CAG has killed the surprise/possibility of finding decent games on clearence?

Not sure where I'm going with this comment, just felt like bitching about it.

well I play lots of games, I don't always finish them all, but i buy games i know i want to play, and if i think something will be rare and i find it for cheap, then i'll buy it too in case I need the money it'll be worth later on down the road. It's like an investment. figuring out which games are worth something and buying copies just to have is almost like studying the stock market. But unlike the stock market, even if that game goes down in value to the point of not really being worth anything at all, at least you can still play the game unlike the stock which is just a piece of paper. Thats just how i look at it. I think no matter what though, there will always be rare games because new collectors pop up all the time and when they learn the market, these games become more sought after by a wider variety of people. But then again, sometimes long time collectors may end up selling off there collections and getting out of the whole gaming thing. So its kinda hard to say what will affect the current gen collectability.

Let me chime in here. Whoever posted about the generation shift is in fact right on point. I just found recently that the big EBGAMESTOP doesn't take in any PS1 or N64 systems any more for credit. so when PS3 hits the shelves, there'll be a boat load of "little Jonny's" trading their PS2 stuff.

PS2 is going to be a different breed though, and I believe SEALED copies will be of far more value for some of the titles listed above from a totally COLLECTOR'S point of view, obviously since collectors are a strange beast.

So there is a distinction to be made between used and sealed. I remember a sealed Wizadry selling for quite a bit on tha bay. Even a non-GH sealed Kingdom Hearts goes for a substantial amount now on ebay. I think there is a wal-mart still selling a sealed Ephemeral Fantasia for $50.00. One recently sold on ebay for a BIN of $30.00. Although the game is horrible, it's hard one to find sealed up until June 11th.

Sealed PS2 games before they stopped putting the White Sticker Label will be of more importance if prices start to go way way up in the next 5-6 years for sealed PS2 games in general. It's easier to do a re-seal when there are no white PS2 sticker labels on the top of the gameboxes anymore like the recent new releases for the PS2.

how much money will a original factory sealed Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 bring in 6 years? With people with more money than sense buying factory sealed Chrono Triggers at $800, the possibility is there for a some PS2 games to get above the $200 mark.

Yea that was me :)

Another thing to note:

Unlike previous generation shifts. E-commerce is now booming. Little mom & pop online shops on eBay and Amazon are everywhere. There are people that scour Retail Stores for cheap media to sell in their online store. These people are in-fact saving games that would otherwise get opened and sold to 13 year old Jimmy, who would open it and then drop it back into circulation via GameStop.

The generation shift will in-fact make games LESS valuable at first, and more abundant. The PS2 has more stock than any other platform. When the shift occurs you will see a flood of games come out of the woodwork. Remember there are video games sitting in stock rooms in countless K-mart / Walmart / Sears / Targets / whatever. These stores are going to be liquidating serious backstock when the PS3 comes out. It will take some time for games to get valuable again for the Playstation 2.

When did they stop putting the white sticker on top of PS2 games? I just noticed it with GTA: LCS, and was overjoyed that my days of worrying about it tearing up the case cover were over. That thing ravaged my non-GH Kingdom Hearts cover.

You need to break out a small knife and cut down the line and then peel the stickers off from the inside out!

(...something I wish I had found out a few years earlier before a couple of my DVD cases got borked in attempts to remove the large multitude of security stickers they slapped on 'em)

Well, sometime's stores open up old stock to put in Greatest Hit's Sleeves. This happened with Red Faction. Fry's Electronics has stacks of Red Faction titles with a weak GH's label printing, re-shrinkwrapped.

Yep! That is what I do :)

Last year when Slug 4/5 came out. I believe that was the first game I saw that didn't have a seal sticker on it. And if that wasn't the first game, it had only happened a week or two before Slug's release then.

Someone always brings up Mad Maestro whenever a thread about rare PS2 games comes up but the game isn't that hard to find. I literally see piles of them whenever I go into a Toys R Us. I'd give it a 3 rarity (out of 10) on the DP scale.

REZ wont be rare since it got reprinted unless you have a sealed one.

QGM (or something like that) said they are gonna reprint all the 100$ ps2 games.

Yeah, true. No way GamesQuestDirect could get MvC2 re-printed, so that'll always be an expensive one. I got the Xbox version but I guess I should get the PS2 one too while I can still afford it.
