TOPIC, RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE.
For a while now, the Amiga port of Castlevania has been a bit of a confusing mystery.(read here if not familiar with this: http://www.vgmuseum.com/mrp/NewCV/box-pcccv1.htm )
I finally got my hands on a physical copy of the game, and have figured out the truth about what was actually sold.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n310/Protogem/amigascan1.jpg
Here we have the Amiga identifier sticker, which indicates it is in the same release group as the Commodore and PC ports.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n310/Protogem/amigascan2.jpg
And here we have confirmation the Novotrade version is indeed the real deal. The different shots on the back of the boxes are more than likely doctored up screenshots by Konami or Novotrade before development was completed. Speaking with those in the Amiga community, it seems this was a rather common practice.

Hey Dreamchaser, nice to see you man. How is your collection coming?
On another note, I'm not sure if this has been done before, but I finally was able to get Castlevania for the PC running with adlib sound to rip a few songs. For those who listened to the Amiga or Commodore renditions, or were forced to listen to the sound through a PC speaker back in the day this may be interesting.
http://rapidshare.com/files/9240390/cvpc_adlib.zip.html
Adlib was the best you could get on PC in the 80s, and these renditions arent too shabby.

Guilty as charged. I have been waiting years to get that game, and would not back down. I would have gotten it for less, but I had fierce competition from someone with deep pockets.
You're lucky i found it after end of auction, otherwise i'd have fought too!

Forsooth, my favorite thread returns? Perhaps it can be ressurected once every 100 days, in canonical fashion.
Kid Drac is a good buy. Im eyeballing an auction for a complete one as we speak.
Waiting on a vintage Simons Quest (Noroi No Fuuin) Japanese guidebook, and the CoD mangas as well.
Good times.

Wow i didnt know that the Amiga version was that expencive. Worth it tho if you have looked for years. When you finaly see it its better to pay alittle extra instead of waiting 1-2 more years hehe. Still no guarantee it will go cheaper the next time you see it. Congrats! :)

I have no where near the collection for CV that Arasoi does.
Here is my collection:
http://www.theretrogamer.net/temp/cv/cv-all-dp.jpg
It includes:
1) Castlevania (NES)
2) Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (NES)
3) Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (NES)
4) Super Castlevania IV (SNES - with manual/no box)
5) Castlevania: Dracula X (SNES)
6) Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PSX - complete)
7) Castlevania: Cirle of the Moon (GBA - complete)
8) Castlevania: Double Pak (GBA - complete)
9) Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (NDS - complete)
10) Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (NDS - complete)
11) Castlevania 20th Anniversary Limited Edition Pak
I eventually want to get the GB games. I used to have the boxes and manuals to all 3 NES games and had both PS2 games complete, but recently sold them.
Notice all the games I have are the 2D CV's! :) The 3D ones, IMO, are just plain awful!
Arasoi - great thread!

Cool stuff ckendal. :) I don't have that much either at the moment :(
I have 1 & 2 for the NES (loose)
I had Aria for GBA (cart only) I need to get that back again or get the double pack soon. I'll get the DS versions as soon as I can find a damn DS!
and I'll eventually get the others too. Well, with the exception of the 3D PS2 versions. I'm more of a 2D Castlevania fan myself. ;)

That is a showcase of various glitch techniques for the PSX version, to increase map coverage. Mainly the wolf glitch it seems. I've never been big on the glitching scene myself, but there are a few websites around that explain how to do them.
The Castlevania Dungeon forums have a few glitching masters posting there, I believe.

Ah, thank you!
If you can find it for under $50 you did pretty damn good. I remember paying around $65 and thought it was a decent deal a few years ago. I still don't know why the game gets so much slack. Its not as good as Rondo, I agree, but its still a damn fine game with a stellar soundtrack.
I think its likely cause it followed IV with the flex-whip. Imagine what X would have played like with the flex-whip included. That would have been cool. Out of curiosity, does anyone know if IV and X were developed by the same Konami team?
Arasoi
02-15-2007, 02:45 PM
Super Castlevania 4 was developed by Treasure, their first and only game in the Castlevania series.
The rest were developed by Konami (including Dracula XX/Dracula X SNES), or subdivision KCET.
Back in the day, Dracula X SNES fell flat on its American release because it not only lacked gameplay additions from SCV4, but also CV Bloodlines, which was already watered down from what people considered to be CV4 standards. People felt like it was a step backwards to the NES games.
My opinion on the game has changed a lot recently. It really isnt a bad game, I enjoy it's challenge level. Nowdays I think it gets trashed a lot because it's compared to Rondo too much. The only thing that really bothers me is how its controls and Richter's movements seem so bogged down. He even walks funny because the animation wasn't timed correctly like Rondo.
All in all, far from a bad game though.

... it seems that one of the programmers from the group worked in Yume Penguin Monogatari.
I wonder if Treasure had something to do with the team that made Kid Dracula and Wai Wai World 2. Doubtful, none of the people in the Wikipedia article show up the credits to Kid Dracula, at any rate... (Both games were made by the same R&D Team at Konami. I think it was Team Murata.)

What I got is....

Castlevania-Lament of Innocence. (PS2)
Castlevania-Curse of Darkness. (PS2.)
Castlevania-Portrait of Ruin. (DS, the new kid on the block....for now.)
And when it comes out, you can add the Dracula X Chronicles for the PSP on that list.

Sorry to hear that Arasoi.
Usually offering the seller a measly 500 YEN extra gets them to ship to internationally. 500 YEN is $4 give or take a few pennies. Depending on how rare it is, maybe offer 1000 YEN extra.

And apparently he could say you don't understand the principle of "kaigai hassou shimassen" : i don't ship overseas!
It is clearly written, then you're warned when bidding...this pisses you off..but unfortunately those are the seller's terms, and you didn't respect them!

Wrong.
My proxy bidder does internal shipping, so he would ship to their holding facility in Japan, which is not overseas. I would be charged seperate shipping to here after.
It has nothing to do with where he physically ships the item. There would have been no inconvenience as to where he shipped the item, he simply recognised my proxy bidder's account name and refused to sell to them, because they are an outfit like Celega.
What is the auction about? I need to login to see it and i dont have an account. Cant you get Celega or something to bid for you?
I use another outfit similar to them. You cant get in to the auction because it was canceled and no longer exists.
jajaja
02-17-2007, 04:42 PM
So if you won it he would ship within Japan, but out of principle he just canceled the auction because he knew it would later be shipped outside Japan? If so, thats wierd..
Arasoi
02-17-2007, 04:52 PM
The seller stated in commonly apologetic/polite and often misleading language that he did not want the item itself to go to a buyer outside Japan. Shipping was not the factor in the situation.
I've done business through this outfit for years with Japanese sellers with the kaigai hassou shimasen policy, and never had a problem before. I chose a proxy bidder for this reason, to deal with sellers who do not want deal with shipping the item outside of Japan.
This is why I was annoyed about it, because the seller refused to sell it for another reason.
I again own rarer items than this, so I'm not terribly upset. And theres probably nothing to be done about it. It just wasnt a professional thing to do on his part, in any context. It isnt 1998 or 1999 like when Adol was buying items there anymore, foreign bidders by proxy or with direct accounts are common by now.
jajaja
02-17-2007, 05:00 PM
But why does it matter for him if the game gets outside Japan or not if hes shipping it within Japan? Doenst make sense to me hehe.
Arasoi
02-17-2007, 05:09 PM
Of that I couldn't give you an exact answer. He made an auction, his auction terms were not violated by my proxy bidder, who were willing to pay more.
It's cultural, I could only begin to understand why. Adol has stated in other threads that when he got started with this kind of thing before the millenium, there was a lot of resentment towards foreign bidders of any kind horning in on Japanese auctions. I would have thought that sentiment would have seriously quieted down by now due to the sheer amount of foreign bidders with their own accounts, and proxy outfits, but maybe I'm wrong.

National pride. Some Japanese people think Americans aren't worth their time, regardless of how much they're willing to pay for an item.
Yeah. Stupid, I know.

02-17-2007, 06:13 PM
Ye, i thought about pride, or that he just didnt ship outside because of the principle. I think its stupid too hehe :\
Ye thats true, now worldwide shipping is much more common than back in 1999 so you would think people would be more open about it.
Wrong.

In that case,my apologies, you're just facing an asshole like i faced HUNDREDS in years.
What is the problem if you communicate with them, normally and even pay them MORE money (since you won the auction that means you offered more than other japanese guys)
Yes,they don't want the "japanese video games"going outside of japan...like if i was hitting all japanese ppl in Paris taking pictures because "i don't want foreigners to keep memories of my city"..pure racist thing in my opinion. Not national pride, just RACISM.

Unfortunaly that seller's attitude creates bad business. When my Dad was still in the military, we got to go there several times and we did encounter things like this once or twice. The seller was willing to sell to us, but at a SEVERELY JACKED UP PRICE.

Thats a good price, to get it complete.
The game was a mixed bag, but underrated nonetheless. It posesses a unique charm thats hard to describe to someone that isnt a fan of the older games. One of my favorite areas in the series, the Skeleton Cave, appears in this game only.
Ironically enough, the US version of HoD is one of the few games I don't have in my collection, just two versions of White Night Concerto/Concerto of the Midnight Sun.

I don't know if this has already been talked about a million times in previous posts in this thread--but I'll bring it anyways...
Castlevania Bloodlines on Genesis is a great game in the series--and I'm a big fan. BUT--does anyone else notice some bad color bleeding on it? It seems especially bad near the life bar. And before you ask--its not my TV.
I would love to see a VC release of Bloodlines too. It would probably look great in 480p.

Bloodlines is indeed a nice entry in the series. I haven't noticed any color bleeding issues unless I played it on my Genesis 3's composite out, but that was more a G3 problem than anything else.
Looks perfect on my Genesis 1, or an emulator.

I want to get the ones for Curse of Darkness. Those are good options at a good price when you can't find the official stuff. The guy I buy them from, animecast, on ebay is a great seller. I've been looking for boxes and manuals for the original NES castlevanias for about 1-2 years now, with no luck. My copy of PCE rondo is out on loan. I want to buy a DS before I try to get my hands on the Portable Castlevanias.
I actually had a harder time finding a copy of Bloodlines than anything else. I wanted the hard-back genesis box instead on the more common paper box. I was actually able to buy the NES castlevanias all at once at a pawn shop. Symphony of the Night and Chronicles, I got the day they came out!

The manuals for the NES games arent too hard to find, they show up quite a bit and for pretty cheap. The complete games have been quite low recently, as low as 25 bucks for a complete/mint CV1 NES.

That's one issue I have with buying loose games. Sometimes I end up with 2 or more copies of the same game b/c I end up buying a complete one off ebay.

i cant stop watching/buying castlevania games off ebay right now. I'm getting addicted like crazy.
Right now the thing I'd like to own most is Rondo for the turbo duo/pc engine, and a real pc engine to play it on.

Ah I remember watching Ebay for years, trying to get every game. Eventually I ran out of games, and had to go to Japanese auctions too.
Before Ebay I hit the local scene, I think the best deal I got was a Saturn NITM/SOTN mint and complete with obi for 60 bucks (which was a pretty good deal at the time)

I got the same deal on ebay, only I think i paid $10 to ship from japan, so $70 total for my mint NitM with obi.

I was lucky enough to buy Rondo Of Blood from a U.S. seller at about $150. I still don't have a Duo/pce to play it, so i just use magic engine and use save state every 4 minutes.
I wish I never traded in my GBA and all my games, b/c now I have to go track down all that stuff again. Circle of the moon still my favorite on that.

While not all collectors share my fascination with unofficial, or "pirate" items, I for one always enjoy a good/interesting pirate game, and sometimes interesting stuff pops up.

Like this Brazilian auction. Looking closer, the Castlevania pirate has the artwork of Dracula Densetsu for gameboy, and is probably a CV1 pirate. I also always liked those black NES plastic cases that many brazilian pirates come in.
A closer look:

I'm still trying to track down someone in Brazil who can proxy bid for me on auction sites like this, and/or occasionally pick stuff up at the flea markets/swap meets down there for me, for some cash from me for their troubles. This stuff is too nifty to resist.
