On the Konami side, there are some fun FC/SFC titles to pick up.
Wai Wai World 1 and 2 (Famicom), fun side scrollers with classic Konami levels, and characters playable. Waiwai2 uses a chip called the VRC3 chip, for enhanced sounding music.
Contra (Famicom version, Gryzor is only Euro) - Added introduction sequence with a full story, it has a special chip for a few interesting graphic effects in the levels.
Akumajo Densetsu (Famicom) - blows the US version (Castlevania 3) right out of the water, the VRC6 chip lets the cart use sampling for the music and it sounds great.
For Non Konami Id recommend:
Rockman and Forte (SFC) - A good game, technically the last good side scroller of the series. The GBA port is fairly bad, this is the version to own.

Yay, That is good thing that you start collecting japanese games,.. (Mostly they have prettier art work then Euro/Usa releases and of course your collection looks damn cool ^.^)
And of course I think that you should have a look at most of those games by an emulator that you know do you think that it is a good game, but if you are just collecting here are some:
Final Fantasy I for FC - This is kind of "must have" game, Final Fantasy I is the game where the all started, that is the reason ^.^ (And of course if you like RPG's you can/must buy all FF japan releases)
Chrono Trigger for SFC - Another very very good RPG,and it has very good intrigue
Dragon Quest for FC - Lke Final Fantasy I, this is it, where the all started, you can try this at emulator to see those cute monsters and when you see those, you have to buy this game ^.^
And yes, I am a RPG fanatical so my mentioned games are RPG games..
And of course these games you could pick up:
Bahamut Lagoon for SFC
Ganbare Goemon Gaiden: Keita Ougon Kiseru for FC
Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2 for FC
Rockman 4 for FC
Yoshi no Cookie for Fc
Akira for FC
Gargoyle's Quest II for FC
All Dragon Quest games, for FC and SFC
All Final Fantasy games, for FC and SFC
(And maybe you should take a look at all the Square/Enix RPG games, all of em are great ^.^)
Have a good time with collecting japanese games...
Love, Captain Qb.

These are all SFC games. If you like 1945, then try Capcom's Area 88. Its inexpensive and fun but horizontal rather than vertical. Gundam Endless Waltz is a great fighting game and very similar if not the exact same as Gundam Battle Assault for Playstation. It's a little expensive though. All of the Dragonball Butouden games are great but a little costly. All of these games can be played with out knowing any Japanese. I'd say all of the Goemon games but they're RPGs and have a lot of text.

Get Devil World for NES! It's the only game made by Shigeru Miyamoto that wasn't released in the U.S. due to NOA's policies on use of religious icons in games.
It plays like a more complex Pac Man. You can read about it here:

That's good to know, I always wondered about that game. On the plus side, it should be fairly easy to locate at a decent price (being that its one of those early first-party Famicom releases that always seems to fill up used game stores).
