View Full Version : DigitPress - What role does this place play in your life?

I realised that this forum actually plays quite a big role in my life. I have an extremely taxing job (80-100 hours per week) and just being able to drop by here and get my mind off things for a few minutes is much-needed therapy. Being in the presence of other "serious gamers" is a great thing!

Would be cool to hear your thoughts...some I guess come here for trading/buying/selling, others mainly to discuss games on their favourite "dead" console, etc...

Let the stories fly.

I don't watch much TV, aside from movies. So, my major form of winding down after work is surfing the 'net.

DP is my homepage and opens up first. I spend quite a bit of time here. I do alot of forum hopping after visiting DP, but I always come back.

It's a great site with a great online community! </butt smooch> LOL

This site is a good place to talk about older games. Its always fun to learn from other people.

The store has become my main source for games, new and old. I like to stop by at least once a week so I don't miss any rare games that might come in. I'm there so much, I know Joe must be sick of seeing my face already. LOL

I come here about 2 hours a day and relax when I'm on the internet to see what's going on. With DP, I can see what's going on with the gaming world, the collecting world, and what's going on with all of my friends over the net.
All of you are my buddies. Except that GrandamChandler guy. He's got shifty eyes he does.

I've been to Joe's house three times and have visited his store once - and I live in Ohio. Technically, I passed *your* house getting to his store. LOL

Funk Buddy introduced me to DP in JAN 2004. I signed up after a while but was reluctant to really take DP in. At the time I was highly addicted to NG.com, nowadays it's switched. NG has turned into a bit of a joke (maybe that's too harsh -- a former shell of itself is more like it) while to me DP has a nice balance of legit, thoughtful posts and replies, but it's not so goody two shows that you don't see a bit of drama once in a while.

In 2006 especially I have taken a strong liking to DP forums. Just a bunch of knowledgable blokes you guys are and some GREAT deals I got off the buying and selling forums as well.

I'd say this place enhances my overall gaming experience.

I like the forums because you get to hear the voice and opinion of the actual gamer. I'd rather spend an hour here than reading any gaming magazine.

Besides, the people in the Buying and Selling page are good to deal with. In fact, some people I've done deals with are likely reading this or may have already posted.

If it wasn't for these forums, my 4-year old nephew wouldn't have gotten a Super NES late last month, which I gave him as a gift. AdamG sold me the Super NES on these boards, which came used with all the hook-ups. I ended up bundling it with some of my own SNES games I already had and a baseball title I bought from Steven (who posted above) awhile back.

Zach Meston referred this site to me several years back, and it has changed my collecting forever. My collection not only tripled in size, but the gaming world became a network of amazing people and contacts. From one of the CGE shows I got to attend, I met several friends including Rick Weis who lives very close to me. I am very grateful to the information and friends who I have met on this site. I visit it almost every day, and feel home here. This will be my video game home as long as the site is up. I look back and see my video game collection alot smaller without this site and the sincere people who make this site enjoyable.

For a minute there I thought I was in Off-Topic LOL

Ya, love the site and didn't really do consistant postings until late December when I finally settled in my cubical at work and began to spend more time with this site. It's been pretty interesting, helpful and opened me up a bit more to collecting and seeing what else everyone has been going for. It's somewhat sad to have already seen some users come and go within my short time here thus far but I don't plan on leaving anytime soon. Slowly there's been more time devoted to posting on here and reading other people's threads. Since I spend quite a bit of my time on a computer each day between home, work, and school it's nice to have something on-line besides waiting for updates on web comics, reading the news, chatting on IRC, ect. to read into often.

And dangit Damaramu... whenever you play that "Morning Musume - Koko Ni Iruzee" song and have that clip on the left of those Japanese girls doing some wierd stances I become memorized. It's like that one gif what's his face had in his sig for a good while from the Mario commerical in Japan.

it keeps track of what i own (as long as i rember to put them in my collection list when i get them) and its a place to get rid of things i dont want and get something else i am looking for as long as some one is selling something cool.

its also neat to see what people find out at flea markets and such.

For me, this is a great place to hang out and post. I come here on a daily basis. DP is also a good place to shop. A fellow forumite hooked me up with a model 1 Saturn for $29. Would have cost me over $50 at a place I'd originally planned to buy it from.

I love these forums. I found them last year when I decided to collect SNES games. I don't really do it much anymore, but I loved the community, as everyone here is so damn friendly. So I decided to stay.

Anyway, I don't watch a lot of TV, so I'm usually online. Digitpress is one of the many forums I go to, but it's definetly one of my favorites, since there's a huge group of people here. You can pretty much discuss anything; there'll always be another person willing to talk about it! :)

The DP has a higher maturity than any other forum I ever tried out. I really feel like I learn something when I read the posts here.

I first really became a part of the DP during a discussion in Off topic about soda that no longer existed, that was when it really just felt right.

A bit later I discovered the joy of the Buying and Selling Forum and have since gained many enjoyable sweet deals, it is like going to the flea market from the comfort of my desk.

EDIT: I do not think I specifically answered the question. The roles that the Digital Press fills are as a sounding board for possible purchases, A group of Sages which to bug for knowledge of the obscure, and the friends to that are always welcoming, even on 3rd shift.

In all seriousness, this place is great. I have never met a nicer group of people online. The sense of COMMUNITY makes this place great. So many stories and jokes, the friendships that I have made have definitely been worthwhile.

This place has gotten me some great deals, and opportunities to gain a lot of knowledge in this hobby.

DP (online) has been a decent place for news, deals, and just decent chat with folks into video games.

I'll have to admit that it is not as good as it used to be. No insult intended, but there are far too many trolls than there used to be. For this reason alone, I only visit DP a few times a week. I must confess that I get more enjoyment on smaller boards dedicated to specific systems - they are out there!

The main issue I have is when people start posts asking for opinions - and then you give yours - and a bunch of nuts jump on you like they are God and you are a slug. In simple terms, Trolls.

I will still come here - but I hate trolls! :hmm:
(And the large influx of ebay people - yuck).

For many years, Digitpress has been for me the Go-to place for finding out about which games are worth the money, and which aren't. I have almost never been disappointed.

The gaming mags are all fluff; they'll never give a game negative press unless it is completely buggy. Only the real fans here are trustworthy. Plus the gamers here are really helpful. I've never bought or sold from someone here (I have most of the old games I want, and any I don't have are almost impossible to get, like Valkyrie Profile), but one DPer did help me catch a rare promo Pokemon once - and that was pretty awesome.

I got really lucky, this was the first gaming forum I really joined. I was on a teen board before, but never liked it, never got comfortable, the maturity level was just so low... but here, people know what they're talking about, and the conversation gets interesting.

Plus I can post something completely incoherant (*cough*cough*RandomQuestionsthread*cough*) and someone else will have FUN with it instead of being outright offended by it, or post something that's only intended to be insulting to me.

I met the DP guys and gals at my first year at CGE, and if memory serves I signed in the first time the following July (I was... slow). And now I'm here pretty much every day, posting once in a while, playing the games, now writing blog entries that are hopefully interesting to SOMEone, and I've a spot on the web that I can really just be comfortable. I love being able to talk about games with people who have something to say other than "Dude, 7h15 |\|3\/\/ M4|)|)3|\| 15 7h3 S|-|1ZZZ!!!" or something like that.

So... yeah. LOL :D

It helps to know that their is people that enjoy the same thing I do and to hear from different people all around the world different take on video games and life in general. It also helps at work when you work long days and you can take a few minutes to see what other collectors are doing.

DP has stolen my one real internet friend, Jumpman, away from me!!

I've been a member of DP for several years now, and while I am not nearly as active as some of my forum friends are, I find the site and the forum an invaluable resource on the world of video games. I specifically enjoy reading the prototype central, collectors guide and rarity section, and the buy & sell is great.

My only real complaint is that through sheer volume it is sometimes difficult to keep atop of everything, but I imagine that is always the end result of success.

DP is among my top 3 daily sites to visit, after cgcc.ca and slashdot, and I'll usually pop by whenever I have some free time.

I log in and check what is going on at least 5 times a week if not more. It is a great break from work during my lunch hour. Besides that, I like the community feel of things and how I can read from people with similar interests.

All my adult friends have grown out of video games. Screw them, I'll play video games all night long with my 11 year old. At least we are bonding on some level and he plays the classics with me.

If that wasn't enough, Joe opened a video game store! Booyah! I can get classic stuff at a good price and know it will work. I look back on what I have purchased in the last 6 months and I can't beleive how my collection has grown.

I was big into chatrooms years ago, so vbender helps me get that fix late at night.

To sum it up, DP is my new crack addiction.

I started out coming here simply for the online rarity guide, then starting lurking around on the forums and seeing some great conversations. Then, I decided to join the boards here because this is easily the most mature forum I've come across in years. I have a pretty hard time carrying on a conversation with others that aren't into gaming, because it's my main hobby and I don't have much else to talk about really. LOL But this place, with it's emphasis on gaming, along with areas to discuss other things, is perfect for me. Also, thanks to DP, it is now my goal to have my own Room of Doom someday. The collections most people have here are absolutely amazing. My family and some of my friends think I'm crazy for wanting a big collection of video games. Hogwash, I say. After checking out some of the collections here, I know it's more then possible for me to accomplish. :)

I love this site and all the regulars, and I hope they're here to say for a long time. Keep the interesting stories coming! I always try to read them all in my free time. :)

I love being able to talk about games with people who have something to say other than "Dude, 7h15 |\|3\/\/ M4|)|)3|\| 15 7h3 S|-|1ZZZ!!!" or something like that.

Plus, it's 5:15am and I can't sleep, so here I am. That ought to tell you something.

It's no exaggeration to say DP constitutes the majority of my social life.

Normally this would lead one to think I am a 30-year-old Pokemon addict living in Mom's basement but that's not the case. I have a great wife and two fantastic kids. But beyond them there's little else.

My parents, brother and sister all live relatively far away from one another as well as me, making complete family gatherings difficult at best. My in-laws all live out of state. My closest real-life friends - some of whom go back 25 years - all either live outside of town or are too busy with work and travel to prohibit seeing them regularly. My job is only a part-time one that has no office, no co-workers and no regular contact with any one set of clients. I go to school full-time, but feel personally disconnected from my fellow students as I am generally twice their age. I attend church as well as a Bible study once a week, which is great for personal spiritual growth but, being generally introverted, I find it difficult to transcend into anything beyond a superficial relationship with my fellow fundies. Lastly, my neighbors on either side and across the street are all in their eighties, and have no patience for my youthful tomfoolery.

So there it is: I've got my family, and I've got Digital Press. And between the two I don't feel like I'm lacking anything.

I don't like it here. No sir, not at all. :P

One of my friends keeps looking at my computer and asking "What is that red and black website you are always on?" DP, baby.

I've only been here, what, 15 months but it really does feel like a home on the net for me. Good people, good discussions. I know old timers say the board was better "back when", but personally I find this place much freer from egos and flames than the rest of the net. We can usually have a great discussion about one of our shared passions, and in the other forums (OT, Forum du Jour) we can talk about things not gaming related. Just like real life friends -- as I know many of us are.

Home is where you choose to hang your hat... Here I am! :)

Digital Press is everything a gaming community should be. I don't see how it ever could have been better, when it's already the best there is.

I've had nothing but good experiences here. I've had childhood dreams un-shattered after years here. I've learned much about myself and even the area I live through things I've heard here. And of course met some real cool people.

Ah, just reading this thread... it gives me the warm fuzzies.

I'm not the regular I used to be but I check in more often as my "second life" gets into a routine. I don't need to tell you what digitpress.com means to me, but I do need to tell you that it's just as important now as it was fifteen years ago when Digital Press was just a really good idea between two really good friends.

So many years later, I've met the most avid and intelligent gamers and collectors on these very forums. Lots of those people who were just "handles" in the beginning have become my dearest friends. Side projects have taken on a life of their own because there are so many people with the same passion for gaming out there.

Fifteen years. Nearly seventy issues. Two books totalling over a thousand pages. Seventeen thousand forum members with over one million posts.

... and we're just getting warmed up, folks.

Since becoming a poster on the site, i've devoted a good amount of time here, be it to the helping QotF with the PS section of DP:Advanced back in the day, to making some of my nearest and dearest friends, even when they were cross country from me or just soaking in all the info and randomness that gets tossed about here daily.

I'm here daily and miss the place when its down. I like seeing the site strive and look forward to the future.

DP was my first introduction to web-based boards, and it's the only one I really post on. I like the fact that you can find an expert on almost anything here, be it video games (too many to list), cars (S1lence), or women (Whiskers the Wonder Cat).

I had always used the online rarity guide as reference, but never checked out the other parts of the site. Then I finally realized that no matter what I searched for video-game related, a page or two showed up from this forum. That's when I figured I'd come straight here for my info instead of searching everywhere else.

Well.....the longtime members will remember a short-lived DP column called "A Woman's Touch" which was written by a friend of mine named Monique. She was enlisted by Joe to be a DP columnist. While here, she always urged me to join, saying that DP would be perfect for me. I stumbled onto it after she had left.

It IS perfect. Compare this place to the Gamefaqs forums. Here, you can be wrong over a matter and not be "slammed" for it. You can safely go with the original thread posters opinions or against them. Both viewpoints are generally accepted. The conversations go somewhere.

Yeah, I originally came here for classic gaming knowledge. I worked in the industry from the time of the N64/PSX days onwards to the Xbox, but knew nothing of pre-64. I was very happy to see the big change to DP with the addition of the Modern Gaming forums. We gained some new members and broadened the scope of the site, strengthening it IMO.

This place provides me with a place to either get the day off to a good start in the morning or wind a day down in the evening. It's invaluable as a reference as to which games to either buy or ignore, especially since there is such a massive amount of classic games in the wild where I live. NES completes are not rare, I kid you not. One local classic gaming shop (just down the plaza from our bike shop :D ) has 3 huge shelves of NES completes. They get traded in all the time.

It's nice to be able to come to a forum and talk about old games. Games that the general public view as "shit" to be used as trade fodder for PS2 games. I mean, honestly......where ELSE can you go and have a spirited, serious conversation about Pokemon games?!? LOL

DP is magic, pure and simple.

Cool thread!

I was introduced to the forums right before CGE 2k4 by Raedon. I was a hard core arcade collector who had pretty much run out of room. Raedon set up a trip to go to Vegas/CGE and that's what rekindled my interest in console gaming. Once I started reading the forum on a regular basis, I started learning about all sorts of systems that I never knew existed. Today, my console collection takes up an entire room right next to my arcade collection!

I mainly use DP for researching consoles that are new to me along with figuring out what I still need to complete collections. Plus, I've found that most of the games that are popular here fit what I like to play, so I always check to see what people are saying about current gen stuff here before I buy. A lot of what I have now, I would have never bought if it wasn't for the glowing reviews I read here!

Basically, this is my video gaming home! I may not post much, but I read the new posts several times a day.
