Okay, I have a little bit of a problem here, guys. You see, I just bought a used JPN PS2 from a member here the other week and it seems to repeatly eject the disk drive whenever a game (doesn't matter if it's CD or DVD) is in the process of booting up. It's not too big a deal right now seeing as the games all seem to run fine after the fact, however, it's still annoying, and I really don't want to have anymore problems down the road because of it.

EDIT:

By the way, the two games I've been using to test the system are both scratched up pretty good. Could that also be a factor? I mean, because the laser could be having trouble reading the games so it ejects them.

Oh yeah, and the cords maybe third party, too.

Sorry to double post, guys, but do you think I could just buy one of those goofy looking fliptop mods and bypass having to use the disk tray altogether? It'd probably be a lot easier and cheaper than having me fuck it up or have someone repair it.

As far as I recall, the fliptop mod is meant for doing the disc-swap tricks without risking damage to the tray by pulling it out. It won't help the ejection problem.

You might try it with a clean (read: unscratched) disc and see if it rejects it at first.

And that's exactly why I thought a fliptop mod could be a possible solution. I wouldn't even have to deal with the tray anymore if I installed one. Besides, it's not like I'd need to use a swap disk or anything lke that because it's already a JPN system.

I don't have any other import PS games to try with.

Anyhoo, I guess I'd be willing to give it a good cleaning before I rush off and spend more money (after all, it's not really a probably yet). However, what would I even need to clean or check? I ask because I really don't want to mess around and possibly turn the system into a lemon because of the disk drive.

EDIT:

Now that I think of it, would a fliptop mod even fit into a JPN system casing? I noticed the hard drive and power cord slots are a little different than my US model PS2.

sounds like some sort of modchip is already installed in the ps2...

There are chips out there that force the drive to eject so you can swap discs. This could be one of them. It would be very unlikely for the logic in the ps2 drive to act like this on it's own.

I thought that at first too, though when I opened up the system last night I didn't notice any sort of modification or chip installed in there. Besides, what's the point of modding a Japanese system to play imports?

Oh yeah, and the tray just doesn't open up one or twice.. it usually opens and shuts three to four times before it loads.

One of my friends had a PS2 that did the same thing. It would open and close several times when you turned it on. It was kinda fun when we would come home drunk and try to play a game. It was like a game in itself seeing who could stick the disk in there before it closed again. Kinda like a retarded whack a mole game. Anyway, on a boring sober day, we decide to try to fix it. It ended up being that it had some dirt on the board where the eject button's wire goes and after cleaning it up it worked fine.
