a little help on wonderboy

i am currently playing wonderboy in monster land for the genny and i am stuck on this one part. it's the hidden place by the dwarf village that the little guy with you breaks open. it's the part with the heads that shoot arrows. i've went to the left and only found a shield in a hidden room. if you go to the right there are 4 switches in between the crumbling floor. i've thrown them all , not thrown em , gone down all the holes and still start over at the same place. i can't get out. there is no exit that i have seen. the only thing that happens is that there are candlelike things above the switches and they go out as soon as i throw one. i'm at my wits end. any help would be appreciated.

Feh, giving a link to gamefaqs is an easy copout. SO HELPFUL

In the room with the switches on the floor that put out/turn on candles, I believe you have to figure out a pattern to step on the tiles. If you get one wrong in the sequence they all go out or something, and you start over. It won't take long, trust me, trial and error. It's been awhile since I played the game though.

Triggering the pattern does something, anyways.
