Have you ever played Buster Busts Loose for the SNES? That game is far superior to any of the NES Tiny Toon games in my opinion.

If you like the NES version, you might want to check out the Genesis Tiny Toon game as well, it's closer to the NES version in terms of gameplay. I like Buster Busts Loose the best though.

As far as side scrolling platform "mascot" games go, one of the most underrated in my opinion is Rocket Knight Adventures for the Genesis. It's an awesome game.

yup the genny version seems screwy for some reason? jumping is wrong....

the snes tiny toons was okay... you have one character and the graphics were nice but I didn't want to play the game again.... just missing that fun factor

there is a lot of character in the nes version, each character is cool and has their own strength.. it also had a very nice mario feel, kinda like smb for nes.. tiny toons 2 for the nes was decent but not as good as one

all opinion I guess

There are some fairly nice freeware ones out there for the PC.

Cave Story
Glace
Within a Deep Forest
Akuji the Demon

Thnx, Jorpho

Yeah glace was cool,

I thought satan sam was also decent but way too hard......

Anyway I found a The Adventures of Ralf for PS1 and that looks awesome can't wait to play it
: )

I played tomba 2 and that was kinda sucky so I'm not too sure I want to pick up part 1 even though it looks awesome......

Is klonoa the road to phantomville PS1 any good, I want to pick it up but I played it on the gba and I didn't like it meh......

PLZ discuss, THNX

Ah, I still need to look at Satan Sam.

I should add that some folks are doing some really amazing things with Super Mario World hacks lately. FuSoYa's Demo World: The Legend Continues is worth a look if nothing else. And there's also that other one that someone posted about here a while back. I've been meaning to check out this SMB2DX (http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/194/), too.

You might want to try:

Asterix
Asterix and the Secret Mission
Castle Of Illusion
Land of Illusion
Lucky Dime Caper

on the Master System.
These games tend to get overlooked.

Plok is an awesome game. Excellent graphics, possibly one of the most colorful games on the SNES period. Put this puppy on a RGB monitor, and the color is so intense your eyes will begin to water. And then there is the sound. Plok has amazing sound. Tim Follin did the soundtrack for Plok, and it was a masterpiece in my opinion. He also did Rock N Roll Racing and Equinox among others. It's funny how Plok doesn't get very many mentions, but I think it definitley belongs among the 100 best SNES games.

Cave Story
Consider that one seconded. Here's a Cave Story tribute site (http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/), for anyone who hasn't played the game yet.

There were murmurs of an official PSP version of Cave Story a while back, but it might have gotten eaten by a copyright dispute.

I'm rather interested in La Mulana, another huge Japanese platformer in the same vein as Cave Story. Alas, the translation for that one has only just begun.

Since I already mentioned SMW hacks, have you seen this Second Reality Project II thing? It just came out a week or two ago.

Cave StoryHi!

La-Mulana is...incredibly archaic, obtuse, and frustrating, but in a very good sort of way.

I never got to the second boss. :( The whole thing really has incredible atmosphere and a great sense of foreboding going on, though.

One that comes to mind that reminds me of Donkey Kong Country is Skullmonkeys for PSX. It’s a blend of 2d with 3d looking clay characters and backgrounds.

The stop motion claymation cut scenes after most stages are well worth playing it through!

Oh and this boss that’s made from a real human head!

Donald Duck's Lucky Dime Caper is very good I enjoyed it a lot, very cool you'd have thought capcom made it or something really good, pity a lot of the disney games on the genny weren't as good,

Castle Of Illusion
Land of Illusion

are they as good as their, genny counterparts? same game am I right? or different?

Thanks Racoon

Disney's Kim Possible: What's the Switch? (youtube) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIkKiT2ExBQ)

Give it a shot.

Actually, I picked this up the other day after seeing a thread post about it in some other forums. It's not bad, a little slow for my tastes, but an excellent use of an IP. It has multi-player, grappling hooks, and freakin' back-flips... dedicated to a button no-less! You can even play as that hairless pink thing. :) Definitely worth checking out.

I haven't played the Genny version of Land of Illusion, but the 8-bit version is a splendid little game. It might be a bit short, actually, but trying to track down the stars hidden throughout the levels adds some replay value.

If you can still tolerate NES games, games like Ducktales, Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers, and Little Nemo are some of the best.

Ackman, did you come up with the term "Hop and Bop"? I love it, it's a great name for a great genre. I think you've coined a winner, and I gave five flags for it.

I didn't really start to embrace this genre of games until a few years back. Now that I've got my Xbox with emulators and tons of games, I'm discovering all sorts of gems.

How about...

The New Zealand Story (MAME, multiple)
Psycho Fox (SMS)
Bio Miracle Bokkute Upa (FDS)
Yume Penguin Monogatari (Famicom)
Rayman (Jaguar, multiple)
Little Nemo the Dream Master (NES)
The Jungle Book (NES)

Also, people seem love Zool 2, though I never cared for it. And I've never tried Bubsy, is that any good?

Try some of those. They're not new, but maybe new to you.

Thanks very much k8track

Nah I'm sure I've read it on the DP somewhere before by someone with huge rep.

Yeah I just can't get enough of Donkey Kong Country 2, it's like crack, I've never tired of it thus the hop and bop, I've always liked platformers goes back to the arcade and NES days.

How about

[/opinion]

The New Zealand Story (MAME, multiple) okay
Psycho Fox (SMS) brilliant
Bio Miracle Bokkute Upa (FDS) ?
Yume Penguin Monogatari (Famicom) ?
Rayman (Jaguar, multiple) (sort of played it not enough to give a fair judgement, seems good)
Little Nemo the Dream Master (NES) nice
The Jungle Book (NES) (played the genny version it was alright)

didn't like zool and bubsy is okay it was good for it's time I guess

I'll give you a list of some my Favs:

Penguin Brothers Arcade (love it!) and it has 2 player VS
Hammering Harry Arcade (cool)
Sonic 2 ( I love this to death and I play the first two Acts over and over again, something about the chemical zone *crack*)
Eswat (arcade) doesn't count I guess
Tiny Toons NES
Marvel Land Genny
MR Nuts SNES (even though it is pretty bad I liked it for some reason and I finished it :P )
ACKMAN GAMES SNES 1,2,3
Run Saber SNES
Shinobi games

yeah I'm pretty tired now I'll post some tomorrow once my head clears,

Cheers and keep well, stay frosty.

Another NES gem of the genre that is little spoken of is Felix the Cat. There is nothing you haven't seen before from the genre, but it's quite the fun little Mario rip-off.

Also, if you are a commodore fan, the Great Giana Sisters is a must.

The odds are quite likely that Turtrix will also soon turn up as a free download from the same site.

I think it already was :(, yeah 19 dollars seems a bit pricey for a shareware game, but it seems quite decent.

I also recommend:

Mega Drive:

Misadventures of Flink, pretty damn good
Dashing desperados (awesome 2 player VS like sonic 2 kinda)

SNES:
Shibubuman Zero
Run Saber
