What is the longest RPG game out there? I'm talking about 100% the game, getting everything you can. I'm looking for a long challenge. So what is it?

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain is pretty long and contains RPG elements but don't know if it's considered as such. I doubt however that it's THE longest.

Elder Scrolls games or Phantasy Star Online, lol

I also hear Elder Scrolls: Morrowind is filthy crazy long.
Baldur's Gate 2 on its own is pretty insane (triple digit hours) if you take the time in chapters 2 and 3 to find all of the sidequests, but you can also do Baldur's Gate, Tales of the Sword Coast, Baldur's Gate 2, and Throne of Bhaal as one, long game if you like. That'll keep you busy for quite some time :)
Dragon Quest 7 is an easy 70-80 hours (with many people hitting the triple digits).

If you do every last little thing, such as changing all the card rules to open, and maxing every stat to 250, then FF8 is at least 70-90 Hrs for people who have already beat it, or about 150 for first-time players.

When an MMORPG is tossed into the possible candidates then everything has changed. I think, although longest is what we're going for, one that's actually decent or makes sense would be best. I'm sure there are RPGs out there that are crap, can go on forever and never accomplish things making it long. Who knows, but capping the selection from including MMORPGs should be considered.
Dragon Warrior VII for the PS1 definitely deserves a heads up here. That game is very long. To get through the story alone it is much longer than any Final Fantasy.

I would also third / fourth the Dragon Warrior VII on PSX vote. I recall a complete-must-have-everything-freak who mentioned he had hit 100 hours, and was still on the first disc. @_@;;;

baldur's gate 2 on the pc might hold the title now if you include all the expansions. though i'm sure the pc version of oblivion will top it when they're done releasing expansions for that game.

Guys what about FFX? if you try to change your grid so that it include only +4 in stats and +HP, it's insanely long. I started doing that, and stopped after around 150h. I had still around half my grid to update. But everyone was 255 on every stat and had at least 30k HP.

Don't forget Disgaea! You're not getting some items unless you spend lots of time in item world. And by "lots", I mean "200+ hours". That game is, for all intents and purposes, endless.

The Tales games will take a while if you wanna get 100% of everything.
I know for a fact that Tales of Symphonia needs 3 playthroughs in order to get 100% of everything.

um.. yeah if you dont consider MMO ( i dont think you should, since technically they are endless ) then i believe either morrowind or oblivion to be the longest in the sense that itll take you probably as much time to locate and explore everything in the game as itll take to finish teh story on most other RPGs lol.

If you do everything in Morrowind or Oblivian it will be hundreds of hours.

Yeah, the two Disgaea games are as long as you want them to be. Sure, there are ways to power level and max your characters out (at level 9999) in a relatively short amount of time, but how about maxing out all of your items? Or doing all of the tons of sidequests? Etc.

Wow, sounds like a horrible game then. Talk about a no-fun game when you have to battle that long.

If you want a traditional RPG, and aren't opposed to something older, and heh, uglier, I'd suggest Dragon Warrior VII. It has a ton of side events to work on, collecting monsters, gambling, town sim, stat rankings as well as two completely hard bonus dungeons after the game. The main quest is also fairly lengthy. It's taken me well over 100hs to complete the first disc and I have quite a few more nights of gaming ahead of me to finish the second.
Another option could be the Arc the Lad boxset. Playing the first three games back to back would take a good chunk of time as well as being the best way to apperciate the trilogy.

If you look closely it says on the back of the game that it's 100+ hours of gameplay. There are quite a bit of unlocking and items to be found while I played it and somehow lost interest after around 12 hrs (mainly due to some other games I bought). I'm suprised no one has said anything about this.

I don't think MMORPGs should count here, and neither should "maxing stats," because that's kinda pointless in my book.
The first game that came to my mind was Elder Scrolls. Both Oblivion and Morrowind have to be up there.
The next thing that came to my mind, and probably the longest LINEAR RPG that I could think of, is SaGa Frontier. It's been a while since I've played, but I think there are seven quests, and they're all supposed to take about 20 hours, making it around 140 hours of gameplay. And that's not including maxing out stats or anything like that.
FF8 couldn't have taken me more than 40 hours, and even with completing the Sphere Grid and beating all the Monster Arena creatures, FFX couldn't have taken me more than 100.

Isn't the second disc mostly comprised of the equivalent of clicking "next"? :(

The box lies. I maxed everything and cleared out all the items at around the 30hr point. I wouldn't even consider this an RPG unless you are counting adventure games like Zelda. That said, it was a very solid game.

Sort of. There is a lot of dialog/story unfolding on the second disc, but even still, Xenogears remains among the very top teir of rpgs in terms of story and gameplay.
I'd also recommend Disgaea. The story in Disgaea 2 isn't as good, but it does offer more longevity.

How about FFXII? Sure it is my first time through and I am very thurough on going back and checking things and making sure that I think I have all the extra quests/items done and obtained for where I'm at.
I believe I have about 115-120 hours and I haven't even hit lvl 55 yet. Although I don't know exactly how much further I have to go in the actual story, but I do know there is an extra dungeon or two that has beasts as high as level 65.

It seems like most people are just throwing out the name of whatever RPG took them the longest to beat, out of the five they've played. I'm sure SOMEONE somewhere spent 100hrs on "xxxxxRPG", but that doesn't make it the "longest RPG" for the general gamer. By most popular accounts, Elder Scrolls: Morrowind/Oblivion are the longest in terms of average experience. Until someone who has a widely repsected PhD-level knowledge of RPGs chimes in differently, I'd go with one of those two.

You know what's funny, I misread the topic post. I thought they just wanted to play a long RPG, didn't realize they were looking for the longest RPG. In that case I'd have to agree, Morrowind or Oblivion could take months to finish to 100% completion. It would definately have to be a non-linear RPG. Also the very nature of open-ended exploration lends itself more to Western/PC RPGs rather then the traditional Japanese/Console RPG. But I couldn't fathom what the longest RPG ever made has been.
There are many that are practically endless, especially if they feature some sort of random dungeon generation system. Hell, there are people who been playing Diablo II for years. But then you can easily degenerate into an argument over what is and isn't an RPG.
Or maybe it's just something like Never Winter Nights, that benefits from the endless possibilities generated by user made content.

Yeah, pressing buttons to skip many the later dialogue scenes is pretty mind-numbing.
I'd have to say DW3 myself.

Dragon Knights Glorious for the Japanese Playstation seems pretty long -- the intro (title to first fight) takes about an hour and a half to get through. So far it's a pretty average game, but I'm only about 15 hours into it, and it looks like there's a long way to go.

True, but only because 90% of the game is text, and for some god-awful reason you can't make the text advance faster... you have to watch the letters scroll one at a time across the screen... I gave up, I was so bored.

Even if you hit 9999, you can return to level 1 with GREATLY increased stats, then reach a "better" 9999 and rinse/repeat!
Great game.

since i played just about all of the ones mentioned, id like to point out, that while i agree (as initially stated) taht the TES games are hte longest, the main story lines in each are rather short, under a dozen hours each. its all the side quests, factions and exploring that gets you.
just fyi.
i do wonder what the longest rpg is in terms of playing through the story, not rushing but not taking yoru sweet time either.

I would say that Morrowind, Oblivion, Dragon Quest VII, Dragon Quest VIII, and Final Fantasy XII are the top five if you accomplish everything in them.

Yup. I only played but so much and liked it a lot, but due to time wasn't able to finish it and have yet to pick it back up, however I still have my save. It's a bit more temping to play it knowing it won't take forever to beat it, but did you play the 30hrs with a walkthrough or assistance?
As for the adventure aspect, I'm not sure if the topic really identified what kind of RPG is being discussed. I figured it was a broad subject that included games that emphasized RPG elements, ie. Diablo, Boulders Gate, Zelda, ect. If it's the general RPG (Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, Secrets of Evermore and so forth) then I really don't know what would be considered the longest since I only own but so few compaired to what's out there and most that I do own are under 100hrs.

I don't concur. He was given a press copy, which allows for reviewers to "fast-forward" through any part of a game, plus tools for screenshots, et cetera.
Now, I doubt he completed Blue Dragon that quickly, but I do agree with the "number of discs does not matter" part though.
