[NES] Baseball...the original. I probably am fond of this because it was one of 4 games I originally owned for the NES until I finally got a new game months later. I played the hell out of this.
[NES] Orb 3D...I have NEVER heard a good word said about this game. I don't find it to be a great game by any means, but it is just interesting enough to keep you playing longer than you have any right to want to.
[SMS] Miracle Warriors...I love the fact that when you get to the final boss you can "unload" all of your items that do minor damage one right after another without taking up a turn. I remember borrowing this from a friend who could not finish it and I played it non-stop until I finally beat it. I seem to remember Gamepro publishing a few hints for this game and one of them was incorrect or something...that was a long time ago.

Wow. Thanks, DP. :D
I have one to share: Shinobi on the PS2. I think it's a dang good game, but it often gets bashed for its heavily linear gameplay and berzerk challenge. But it is Shinobi, so I get some charm out of it. I don't play it as often as I do with my other PS2 games, but it is good, and I guarantee that you will obliterate something in the rage induced by the final boss. ;)

I'm going to say State of Emergency for PS2. It's a lot of mindless killing, and I like to play it after I get home from work or anytime when I don't feel like playing something that requires too much thought. :)

Rygar (PS2): Man I loved this frikkin game, the old school side scroller element was totally there despite sometimes annoying camera controls, the bosses ruled. The only thing i craved was more Diskarmor! MORE!
FF8: (PS) Only one I gave a shit about and the only PSOne game I've ever bought. I never owned the Ps1, so I got this game after I got my PS2 and played it on that. Yum, the stories... the art... the lack of annoying squat big eyed big haired cartoon characters, the cool Guardian Force animations. This game was the best of the series and be damned any who says different.
Adventure Construction Set (PC Dos): Wow. All I can say is Wow about this game, If I had a copy that worked I'd still be playing random missions and crafting my own RPGs with this thing. Best damn thing EA ever put out, ever. I dunno if it has critical acclaim, but I loved it so hard it hurt.
Ultima Underworld: (PC) Man, this game ROCKED! gone were the clunky sprites of yesteryear (good for the day, but getting tired by this point Origin) totally new story line, innovative UI, great self contained game. Hated almost universally by Ultima fans. I say more UU fun for me.
SF - Yeah, I'm a PC gamer, sue me.

I've only heard good things about Ultima Underworld, but then again I've only read reviews by old school FPS fans. That's one I need to pick up.

I haven't played it, but Shinobi was the first PS2 title I bought (and it's sitting on my shelf, still sealed). Gotta say it looks really nice.

i REALLY enjoyed playing SUPER OFF ROAD on genesis, even though all magazines bashed that game....i used to say "i will play 10 mins"...and ended up playing 2 hours!!!
I also liked a LOT "Kid chameleon" for Genesis, even though it was never a famous game...
Pig fighter for genesis was also a favoriet game, and most people think it sucks, but they only played the horrid snes version

Final Fantasy 8 (PSX and PC)

Cheeky Mouse - Arcade
Gopher - Atari 2600
Sword of Kadash - Commodore 64
A Boy and His Blob - NES
JJ & Jeff - Turbografx 16
BC Racers - Sega CD
King's Field 1 and 2 - Sony Playstation
Tail of the Sun - Sony Playstation
Ultima Online - PC

Only 2 games come to mind straight away (although I am sure more will pop up)
Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion (N64)
I really can't understand the bashing this game received. I think it is the best in the Turok series for its tighter story line and grittier feel. The graphics may not have been as good as Seeds of Evil but we didn't get the slideshow framerates in parts either.
Body Harvest (N64)
This may not have exactly been dumped on but did not get the recognition it deserved. Such an expansive, epic, monstrous game! Most gamers probably can't get over the first generation N64 graphics and the sluggish controls but this game still routinely make me its bitch (and probably will for a while to come) with its awesome blend of Hunter (Amiga) and Defender style action.[/b]
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. This game got ripped on alot, especially by people who love the Final Fantasy series. I for one love the Final Fantasy series, but if it wasn't for Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, I wouldn't have known what Final Fantasy was until it became a mainstream game series when Final Fantasy VII came out. And what's not to love about this game? It has some of the best music I've ever heard on any RPG to date and it's just plain fun. I think people bash it because it's not as big of an epic as games like Final Fantasy VI,VII,VIII,IX, or X.
MegaDrive20XX

Mappy -NES/Famicom I love this bizarre and unique Namco classic...nothing like it really...yet no one I know has heard of it.
Gauntlet Dark Legacy (Arcade or Console) I love this game....but no one ever wants to join in...
Ghosts N Goblins series (Alot of people whine about how hard all three were, but I stand my grounds and claim that it was all about timing and effort to each level)
Hexen (N64, PC, and PSX) the last game to ever use the original DOOM engine. Many didn't bother, many hated it. I played it to death, I will say there are too many puzzles and alot of errons to do while trying to complete the game successfully without cheating.
Sonic 3D Blast (Genesis and Saturn) I really enjoyed this game, "Traveler's Tales" did a decent job, but since it wasn't a "true" Sonic title, many kicked it aside, yet I loved it.
Three Dirty Dwarves (Saturn) Awesome little brawler, I wish there was something that closely resembles a game like this now. Yet I cannot find anyone who can remember this title.

I love many games that are hated:
Breath of fire 2 (GBA/SNES)- Easily the best game in the series, and one of the best RPG's ever. The only problem is the horrendous translation.
Mega man Battle Chip Challenge (GBA)- This game got some of the worst reviews I've ever seen, but I loved it! It's a unique little strategy game.
Robopon 2 (GBA)- Just another Pokemon clone? HELL NO! It's the best monster-raising RPG ever, and it's the only game that ever inspired me to write a guide (which I gotta finish someday)
Gotcha Force (GCN)- Insanely fun robot combat game, with around 300 playable character, most of which play differently.
Mega Man Network Transmission (GCN)- One of my favorite mega man games ever. I guess it was just too hard for some people.
Gitaroo man (PS2)- Best. Music. game. ever.

Zombie Revenge
Sword Of Berserk (not hated by most, but sorta underappreciated IMO)

The Adventures of Bayou Billy. Many seem to hate this one because of its high level of challenge (I actually beat it without continuing). A nice blend of three genres (brawler, light gun, and driving) and has some nice music. Plus, the commercial was hilarious.
Other noteworthy underdogs:
Mighty Bombjack
Rival Turf (box art cracks me up)
Robotrek
Secret of Evermore
Canadian Psycho

Most people I've talked to dislike or don't care at all for Street Fighter 2010 on the NES. Yet, it's one of my all-time favourite games. This game is a blast when you get a hold of the controls (and use an NES Advantage joystick).
Even though it has received poor reviews when it was released, I played Shadowgate 64 and enjoyed every minute of it (however, a walktrough is necessary - probably one of the reasons it's regarded as an average game).

Jim Power the Lost Dimension in 3D (SNES)
Amazingly difficult, but combines shooter levels, platformer levels, and top-down exploration levels. Beating this game someday is one of my life's goals.:D
No One Can Stop Mr. Domino (PSX)
I dunno why, but I love this one. It's this sublime combination of quirky Japanese charm, irritatingly catchy music, unique gameplay, and fast-paced action combined with the fact that it's one of those beat-in-one-sitting games.
Bonanza Brothers (Genesis)
Even on this very site this game has been panned. I find it to be intelligent in a way most action games aren't, though this action may be a bit slower than most. The original arcade version is better, but I probably have no hope of finding a copy of that, much less a place to put it...

Sonic Spinball – I can play this for hours on my Genesis. Love the music and gameplay. Bought Sega Smashpack for my GB SP just so I could play this game on the go. Hell, I sought out and bought the Sonic the Hedgehog Boom music CD just so I could listen to the music in the car. Yup, safe to say me-likey.
Resident Evil: Survivor – A Resident Evil first-person game? I’m there dude. Or, what I like to call my “Dawn of the Dead” game. Very atmospheric. Loved it and I still love it.

Quest 64. Maybe it's childhood nostalgia mixed with a fuzzy memory, but I really remember digging this game. Apparently critics thought otherwise. If I ever find this game...
Battle Hunter (PSX): A lot of people said that this was just a barebones strategy title hiding behind a budget label. I, for one, find it strangely fun and addicting.
Fantavision (PS2): "You blow up fireworks! How is that fun?" It is. Right down to the wacky obviously-Japanese-inspired cutscenes.
Lord Of The Sword (SMS): Featured on one of Seanbaby's Classic Crap articles in EGM, this little gem is often overlooked. Sure, it might be a lot of backtracking and repetitiveness, but once you get into it, it's actually a lot of fun.

Pocket Fighter got slammed on Gamespot on one or two occasions. I think they, or at least Jeff Gerstmann, who reviewed the game, took themselves too seriously with that one, since it was a fun and unique spin on not only the SF series, but the genre as a whole. I find myself more inclined to play it than the IMO overrated, overcooked Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Partially speaking of which...
Zelda II: the Adventure of Link had some brilliant play mechanics and play balance.

My #1 is definately SF: The movie.
I used to play it on story mode, and right before bison had 1 hit left to beat the game, I would get high as a kite. Why you may ask? in the saturn version, they play a weird japanese music video at the end for no apparent reason, and i have no clue why, but it used to get me laughing hysterically.
no one can stop mr. domino
I have no clue why this game attracts me, but i have a friend that loves the game, and got me into it. now i need a copy (don't worry though, ebgames.com sells it for 2.99 so i already found it). this game is stupid, but i really enjoy it, i don't know why.

Super_Ghouls: I've played Mappyland, I remember loving it.
Nes-: I didin't think anyone in the world disliked Kid Icarus.
Personally I love SMB2: Yoshi's Island. Try playing it to 100% completion, its not a kids game. When I bought the game and plugged it in I thought it was super gay, now I like it. I'm comfortable with my gay game.
Also I like Moonwalker for the Genesis, its so fun playing that game and making comments like "Hi, I'm Michael Jackson and I'm saving little boys outta closets". That game is a must have for anyone, its a conversation piece.

The kids are arguing, some one to play a board game with all of us. Some one to play a computer game with all of us. So get my keys, a pair of gloves and a latter. I unlock the closet; place and climb the latter. I move the pillows out from in front of the safe. I turn the dial on the safe untill the combo is entered. Open the safe. Push the pappers aside reach into that back of the safe... (By now everyone has gathered to watch and is expecting me to pull out a magic artifact of some sort:) I remove my complete Quest of the Rings set, open it so they can see. As I setup the peices and connect the Odyssey2 to the TV I tell them about wizards, warriors, changlings, phantoms. Orcs, deathwings, spydroths, rings and the dreaded dragon. One of them asks "So is it a computer game or a boardgame?". Not know exactly how to answer I say "Both", then suddenly they all hate me. I don't get it. Oh well. the game is better off without the fingerprints anyway.

Oh god yes. And the much-reviled Freedom Fighters! Whenever anyone disses this, the gist of the whine is always, "Waaah, it's not Defender!" Damn straight. It's more fun than Defender. And an easier control set to boot, with your standard O2 control weirdness.
Okay.....here's a weird one for you.
I loved Aidyn Chronicles (that reeeeeeealy sloooow RPG) for the N64. I think that I'm one of the VERY few who completed it...lol.
I'm intending on playing Quest 64 this winter as well. That's another game that most rag on.
Oh yeah......I also agree with Fighter's Destiny for the N64. To this day it's my favorite fighter. Like was mentioned earlier by someone else....you have to spend time with it. Where else can you get your ass handed to you buy a cow?

Here's a game I enjoyed that more than a few people panned: :P
Snake's Revenge (NES)
Blah blah blah "it doesn't fit in Kojima's original storyline (and MGS2 did? :P)" blah blah blah "it was too much action" blah blah blah BLAH!
I'll agree the side scrolling parts didn't fit well, but I for one did enjoy the story line (I didn't expect to get stabbed in the back by your own man), there were a few puzzles that did actually make you think (like hiding at the bottom of the screen to get into the complex at the beginning), and I really enjoyed the end theme/music enough to consider it one of the better midi's ever heard on the NES.
I'm sure for a designer there's nothing worse than having YOUR series get "bastardized" by another group within your own company and not having any input in it yourself, but I think too many hopped on the hater bandwagon for this one out of a little too much Kojima-worship. Sure it had flaws and probably could have been better if he had assisted in its development, but it certainly wasn't any CastleQuest (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/nes/review/7600.html). Far, far from it. =)

I enjoy both Front Mission 3 and now Im currently playing through Front Mission 4 on PS2.
suer the story is a little slow and they did go slightly overboard with all the menus in part 4 but I love seeing the Mechs fight it out even if I do have to play the simulation mode a thousand times just to get to the next level

SMB 2 - NES
I really don't know how so many people don't like this game. Sure it may not be as AMAZING every game in the Mario series mostly is, but the game is still great. In my top 15 list of all time.

Everybody I know (except me) disliked Mario 2 immensely. I'd say that is kind of a universally hated game, unjustly...

I loved Phantasy Star 3.
Sure it didn't quite have the magic feel of the first two, but it was a solid RPG that had two really distinctive unique characteristics.
1) The magic system. 4 "circles" of magic (actually squares) with 4 spells in each. Essentially you got X points to divide between the four spells that determined how powerful they were (or how likely they were to work for a single-effect spell). It had a neat little GUI piece with this square and 4 different shapes/colors to represent the spells... hard to explain without seeing it.
2) The generations. Beat the first 1/3rd of the game. Decide who you will marry, the magic user or the meleer. Your son's abilities are based on that, and where you go up changes, so the plot does as well. Beat the second 1/3rd of the game. Decide again who you will marry, the magic user or the meleer. Again your son's abilities are dependent and the plot changes. Very neat and creative, and great for replay. So far I've done pure melee and pure magic. I've heard the other two combinations are much more difficult since you don't get really good at one thing.

Enter The Matrix (PS2). I actually think it's better than reloaded or revalations. It's at least more coherant. Plus it ties in with The Animatrix, which was a great disc.

No matter how bad a game is SOMEONE out there likes it.
And that someone is each and everyone of us.
We all dig games that no one else can seem to go for.

Myself;
F-16 Fighter (sega master system)
I admit that it's a tad slow ('tad' being an understatement), and that it does have other flaws too. BUT it IS a fun game to me. I play it very often. And it has this strange quirk where sometimes you slip in the card, start playing and your downing jets like you're playing After Burner. Some other times you play it and you can't down one stinkin jet.
This COULD have been a DANDY game if they had just released it on a CART instead of a CARD. A flight simulator of all things should NOT be crammed into 32k when they had 128k and 256k carts. I'm not sure if the 512k carts were around when F-16 was released...
Isn't this the game that required you to use both controllers at the same time? I seem to remember that this game gave me fits for some reason.
As for my favorite "dissed" game. BC RACERS. This is a kart racer by Core Design. Every review that I have read has been negative. So far I only have the 32X version. I'm still looking for the Sega CD and 3DO versions. Someone recently posted that, believe it or not, the Sega CD version is the best visually.

I played this for hours in an arcade in Wyoming when I was a kid. If anyone finds one for sale dedicated let me know...
