The Timesplitters series.
Even though I'm aware that it's done "well enough" to have a 4th installment / current gen sequel (recently announced),
when I tell people that it's my favorite FPS series, they either tilt their head like a confused puppy (usually out of complete un-awareness of the series) or they proceed to tell me how much they hate the series and/or how it's not as good as HALO / Half Life 2, etc.

The RPG Beyond The Beyond for the PSone, I know most say it's shit but I still love to play through it at least once every 1 to 2 years.
I never finished the game, but I like it enough to go back and play it someday. I also really like the music in this game.

Well from what I've experienced, people hate SML because it doesn't follow the same formula as the other SMB titles, people hate GnG for its difficulty, and people hate Gauntlet for its repetitiveness.

Club Drive for the Jag -
This game gets almost no love. My friend thought it was a blast and talked about it for years. I finally came across a copy and bought it and called him up and we had a blast. We stayed up all night playing it. Its just a simple FUN game.
Blue Stinger on the Dreamcast -
This game was universally panned. WHY!?!?!? It had great graphics and an incredible musical score. I know most people said it had camera issues but if it did, it never bothered me. I think the problem was that people tried to take it seriously like Resident Evil. The game was serious at times but overall it just parodied the genere and with great succsess I must say. I also liked the RPG elements. Its one of the most fun games I have played in the past 10 years... Go ahead and flame me... but its true... I love Blue Stinger!

Aerogauge for the N64 had some mediocre reviews, and it was short, but I enjoy it and still play it every month or so. I'd go as far as saying that I like it more than F-Zero X.
I've seen many people dislike New Super Mario Bros, but I considered it the best Mario game since 64 (till Galaxy came out, at least)
Rad Gravity was a pretty innovative NES game in my view, but I saw a lot of posts in that Bottom NES List topic from people who hated it.

First things that come to mind for me are:
Fossil League (DS), Digimon Series (PS1, DS)- I have a thing for mediocre Pokemon clones, or so I've learned over the years.
Deadly Towers (NES)- Terrible music and terrible level and character design. Why can't I stop playing it?
Pac-Man 2 (Genesis)- I must've rented this a hundred times as a kid before I finally bought it. Pac's reactions are still as priceless as they ever were!

Yo! Noid for NES. This game gets disrespected often because of the damn character in the game but the gameplay is solid and very fun. I liked this game as a kid and I like it now. It's actually one of my favorite NES games.
Absolutely!

Club Drive is another favorite Jaguar game of mine. South Park Rally on the Dreamcast was pretty panned, mainly because the tracks weren't well defined and you could easily go off them if you so desired. That's why I loved it! You could zip off where the computer generated karts couldn't normally follow, which was pretty great. Speaking of kart games, Merlin Racing on the Nuon was another favorite, far more so than Tempest 3000.
There's so many other unpopular games that I love, I can't think of them off the top of my head. I'll happily give a game a lot of slack to get down to what the designers had in mind.

I have always like Echo Night for the playstation. Seems to get usually dissed (when mentioned at all). Was really more of a story telling game wrapped up as a mystery than anything else. The ending was really jarring in terms of gameplay since it was totally different than the rest of the game. The movie "Ghost Ship" (2002) reminded me a lot of Echo Night. I also liked it a lot whilst most critics didn't.
Another game I liked was Vandal Hearts II for the playstation. It had a really crummy battle system but if you could see beyond that it had a lot of really great features. The battle system didn't bother me as much as it seemed to bother others if you take into consideration that most AIs in console SRPGs are dumber than boxes of rocks anyway - which typically makes the games less than challenging no matter what the battle system is.

Gotta be Space Giraffe, though that's no so much 'generally disliked' as 'divides the gaming community something rotten, at least amongst those who gave it a chance'.
Can't think of any others off the top of my head but I'm sure there were some in the old days. I even remember getting some mileage... okay, yardage... out of ALF on the Master System, though I may have borrowed that game simply to see how bad it truly was.

Echo Night was reviewed this month in Game Informer's "Classic Review" section. They knocked it...I think it got a 6. They just felt there were some flaws in it, but it had potential to be cool. It actually looks kind of interesting to me...like 'D' or 7th Guest, or even Mansion of Hidden Souls. Those games are usually fun once, and tend to have cool soundtracks.
@Nebagram--I've experimented with ALF and, although I couldn't be bothered with that game today, I think that, based on the adventure/action gameplay, that's probably a game I would have really enjoyed at the time of its release. It's got a bad rep but I think it looks amusing. [It's probably more fun and less bland than freakin' Miracle Warriors, that's for sure.]

Yeah - Echo Night doesn't have much in the way of replay value - I only played it twice (with a long period between plays). I think it is just too slow paced for most people - but it has an interesting story that unfolds and that is what I liked about it. Then again I like puzzle games like Boxxle and Boxy Boy where the pace is pretty slow - but they require some thought.

Well, at least the group I used to hang with when I was younger thought it was boring and pointless. Not exactly the game a group of teens will gather to play. Personally, it ranks up in my top 5 all time favorites with ease.
Soundtrack? What soundtrack? Oh, the stardock tune and the "wowowowowawawawawawawawawawawa......."? I agree, that did add to the mystique. Quite often though I would smack the pause button just to hush it up so it was just me and the sounds of spaceflight.
If you'll excuse me, my Genesis is calling :D

Totally. But it was the opposite--the computer sounded excited when you lowered the shields I think. Then it sounded bummed when you put them back on. I loved it!
The voice sounds infinitely cleaner if you run the sound test ( I think you hold A and B simultaneously while in the Arth space station.) Interference from the other sound channels gives the computer laryngitis, I guess.

For some reason most people hated the PS1 "classics" Mortal Kombat Mythologies and Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi. Mythologies wasn't that bad, it was just hella hard. And having to press a buttom to turn the other way to face opponents wasn't exactly kosher either. As for Teras Kasi, I guess I enjoyed it so much because I played it before Tekken 3 and Dead or Alive came out. It's still fun to me though.

I'm replaying Fallout-Brotherhood of Steel on the Xbox right now. Everyone seems to hate this game. But then, they also state that they're huge Fallout fans and don't like the way the game deviated from the original. I've never played the original Fallout (even though I own it for the Mac), so I had no reason to dislike the game. I found it to be a fun action game with RPG elements. I'm playing it for the fourth time through.

Battle Arena Toshinden - PSX -- This makes alot of those Top 10 lists of overrated games. I still love it. It's sluggish as heck and the AI is braindead, but I still have endless fun with it. The graphics were amazing for their time and still look decent smoothed over on the PS2. The music is amazing, if you are into synth. The characters are a heck of a lot more interesting than in alot of fighters I've seen. It basically introduced the sidestep mechanic. To me, everything about the game is iconic. Along with Wipeout it sold me on, and defined the Playstation as a console (for me at least) until Resident Evil came along. BAT 2 was also solid, but the desperation attacks were unbalanced.
Final Fantasy 8 - PSX -- I enjoyed the DRAW mechanic. I also liked the emo characters and generally schizophrenic storyline.
Wrecking Crew - NES -- I don't know how the majority of gamers feel about this one, but it was another one that showed up on a "worst of" list awhile back. I've loved this since I was a kid. It was the first "create a level" game I played. You could make a superhard/masochistic level... or you could just put together all this crazy junk and set up us the bomb and watch the world fall apart. :)

I love that game. My fav 360 game so far. I found out the deal with the cameras and it is not bad at all now. Basically, if the camera goes crazy, you're doing it wrong. Turn around and go the way you came, or die and start over.

P.N. 03 for the GameCube. It got a lot of terrible reviews and seemed to have gotten alot of negative bashing by people. I love the game. But then again I love a good shoot'em up too. It has a slight learning curve and once you get the hang of it there is a lot of strategy to the shooting action. To me it is a lot of fun.

Rad Gravirt is one of the greatest games for NES. What's not to like?
I just went through the Bottom 20 NES game topic, but couldn't find one guy mentioning Rad Gravity there.
I swear it got mentioned in there. Maybe I misread a few titles or something. This was a while back though.
Well, 5 1/2 yrs have passed since I posted, here's an update!
Those $10 PS1 titles I mentioned on pg 2? I dont have them any more- they were the 1st ones to go in my massive collection overhaul, but I did enjoy them.
That said, thumbs up for Echo Night love. I saw the latest GI review & thought "man, NO ONE appreciates this game, do they." Echo Night: Beyond was also poorly reviewed (I recall Victor Lewis on Electric Playground gave it a 3/10!) but I liked it. Of course, once I got all the endings, it was passed on. LIke the guy above, I also only played it twice, the second time as sort of a goodbye. Echo Night fans may want to try PS1 Juggernaut, a 3-disc adventure game much like Echo Night that also doesnt get much recognition.
Also, big thumbs up to Wrecking Crew! What a great game. A school friend had the NES (I never did) & I always wanted to play Wrecking Crew!
& w/ the arrival of Wii Virtual Console I'm loving the old NES classics I dont already have on cart. I d/l'ed Clu-CLu Land & once I got the control system, see it as a tricky puzzler. At 1st I thought "only 20 levels?" but I havent gotten past #4...
Oh, & WiiWare My Aquarium is on 2x daily, if just to feed the fish. I like most underwater-themed games- Endless Ocean, EverBlue2, Treasures of the Deep, Seaquest, etc when most people/reviewers dont give a good goddamn about them.

Gotta admit I liked and others hated:
Obi Wan - Xbox, I beat it more than once and....loved it.
Hunter The Reckoning - Xbox, I seriously don't understand why people hated this so much, it was like Gauntlet on crack with some really insane wacky bosses and extra moves. I swear I got bashed repeatedly for playing this game and anytime someone came over and I wanted to play it, they just couldn't stand it.
I have honestly never experienced a game I liked so much yet was so hated by so many people before, I really still don't get it, the game is cool! One day it would be cool if someone would play co-op with me, anyone willing? Lol.

I can't really offer up an explanation as to why I loved this game so. Maybe it was the look of the game, or the technique buried deep within that was discovered when you actually gave the game a chance. Sure, it was watered down in some ways when you compared it to the dev's other games, 'Tobal 1 and 2', but I though that it was fantastic. However, I could not get my stuffy, narrow-minded Street Fighter and SoulCalibur friends to play more than a few rounds with me :(

lol there should be a thread with games everyone loves and you hate. i could add a lot more to that list. like final fanasty games... my best friend loves them and has every game, i've tried to like them but i just for some reason hate the game. another one that everyone just seems to loveeeeee are the halo games, now i dont hate halo by any means, and i've had my far share of playin it with my friends but i just fail to see what makes everyone love it sooo much, i just dont see anything specail about it from any other good shooter out there.

Urban Champion is hilarious, what with the flowerpots and the cops driving by.
I'll add a couple of LJN games to the list: T&C Surf Designs and A Nightmare on Elm Street.
The surfing part T&C Surf Designs really does suck, but I used to be able to play the skateboarding for hours without dying.
As for A Nightmare on Elm Street, FREDDY'S COMING!
Being in the Awake World sucked because you didn't have fireballs, shuriken (the ninja also had a jump kick) or javelins.

I'll second (or third, or whatever) some of the recently-mentioned NES games like Wrecking Crew, Urban Champion and Hoops. While I wouldn't say I loved it, and admittedly it is a terrible game, I did have some fun with the NES version of Superman years ago too.
Recently one of the games I've been playing off-and-on is Marc Ecko's Getting Up on PS2, which got average-at-best reviews, but I've been enjoying it quite a bit. Part of it is probably the fact that I'm something of an art nerd and enjoyed the depth of the background and the involvement of many real graffiti artists in the game's production, but I find the gameplay to be mostly alright too.

Tetrisphere N64- Still love this game
Me too, especially the music! "Learn" is one of my favorite video game songs ever:

Maybe I'm just used to the 3DO version. It was superior to the SNES and other versions. The graphics were outstanding for its time, cut scenes and everything. Which system did you play it for?
I have it for snes, sega cd and pc. They all have the same graphics.
Did you ever play the sega cd version that has the "sequel?" Heart of the Alien? It's very tough and very disappointing. If you can get through an average level dying less than 10 times you're a genius at it.
I remember seeing the 3D0 version of OOTW in a magazine but i never got to try it out.

Actually, I first played it on the PC when it was new. When I got a 3DO discounted heavily in early 1997, I picked up this version. The backgrounds were litterally stunning compared to the others. Way better to play on this system.
I always wanted to play the Sega CD sequel, but never did. It only came out on the Sega CD, but I never owned one.

I don't have a Sega CD either, my Genesis was grey from mildew last time i tried to take a load from my parents basement.
I've played it on emulator. I'll save you the trouble of playing it and give you my review.
Don't. I wanted to play it for YEARS when it first came out and when I finally did it crushed a part of my childhood. It was so bad even Eric Chahi(the maker of the first one) was upset. Just pretend it never existed.
I managed to play it through to the end and was physically upset at what they had done to my cherished childhood game. The ending made you think "If all of this bullshit was going to happen, why did I bother with all that hard work through both games?"
It's like winning the lottery and getting robbed on the way to the bank.
Pretend you never heard of it. It's not worth playing... and I don't say that about many games.
