hello,
i've been having a number of problems lately with disc based ps1 and ps2 games that are quite clean, but that neither a ps1 or ps2 will recognize as there being a disc inside. i've tested these games on multiple systems to no avail, and even had this problem with a new game recently. despite there being no topside and few bottomside blemishes, i've resurfaced a few of them which doesn't improve the situation. am i just sitting on coasters? are there fixes for these kinds of discs?

note - it is definitely not my system as i've tried these games out on several of my systems and those of 2 of my friends. all of our systems work well.

What are the conditions of the discs? Have you put them in extreme conditions like out in direct sunlight? Have you recently stepped on them? Have they even been able to ever work before? Dealing with imports or native regions? We need to know these things. :D

You can test if they work if you use an emulator, that's what I do.

Sometimes a game won't work [or won't work well] on my PS, but is fine on the PC. I figure that's just down to age and wear and tear on the console.

these are some of the many variables that i hadn't considered...

the games are ntsc (as are my systems), the games have never sat in direct sunlight (hardly ever been out their case), haven't stepped on them either.

for example, recently i bought a new resident evil 4 for the ps2 and it just doesn't get past the playstation 2 screen. having similar problems with older and used games (which i'm more concerned about) that just don't load up at all.

Sounds like the dreaded Disc Read Error signal of death for that PS2 to me. Sometimes the systems don't give the error for a while and start doing this. Eventually, it won't read anything. If your system is picky, its not a good sign.

That sounds about right:

I'd suggest that you see if other games work on it, even try music CDs to see if you can play audio tracks.

Yeah it sound to be the dreaded DRE. There are ways to fix that, but its very tedious and can be hit or miss.

Odd, because I know of another person who has the same problem, but it's with a scratchless, new copy of Twisted Metal Black for the PS2 (Greatest Hits version). My sister has the game for her PS2, and when I come to her house and try to play it, it loads the Playstation 2 logo, but after that, the game never boots up! It's just stuck on a blank, black screen. The game is 100% scratchless as well. Defective disc maybe? All of her other games work 100% correctly, except this one.

From all info given, sounds like the dreaded impending dre

Are all the disks that won't play of a certain type? (blue, DVD, CD-R, audio, etc?)

As for NTSC.... I know of at least NTSC/US and NTSC/JP

An NTSC/JP game won't play in an NTSC/US system unless the system has been "region" modified, and vice-versa :-)

It sounds like these systems are having trouble with CD based games (PS1 and blue-bottomed PS2 games). That is a classic symptom of laser problems, either due to dirt or age.
