has anyone ever been in an arcade and had a VERY bad experience with DDR? Like they were dancing like an idiot to boom boom dollar and a whole bunch of teens just laughed at you? I want to try one of those games but im too afraid to get arrested by the DDR police or something.

Indeed, a frightening prospect.
My one bout with a DDR machine was during a late-night freeplay event at a local arcade. I had a friend with me who had much more practice than I, and even though I really sucked, I think everyone else was too busy to notice me. (What a great night that was... I finished Metal Slug 4! In 55 continues!)
If you want to avoid a scene, you can always find someone with the home version. Or you can learn humility the easy way by taking aerobics classes. (Worked for me. ;-) )
