Default How the Game Boy Player changed my mind about the Gamecube

As some of you already know, I'm moving to Korea this summer. Since I have little luggage space aside from clothes, I'm forcing myself to only take one console with me. For most of this past year, I'd assumed I'd take my PS2, just for Katamari Damacy and the pinball games I enjoy. However, I've changed my mind and am now taking my Gamecube--just because of the Game Boy player.

I bought the GBP on a lark; I never really used it until I recently bought a bunch of GBA role playing games, some of which I decided to keep and some I decided to ebay (see the link in my sig ). Final Fantasy IV was one I decided to keep. After becoming intensely frustrated with the load times on the PSOne versions of the various classic Final Fantasy games, I decided to pop FFIV into the ol Game Boy Player and see how it performed.

I was hooked immediately. I don't know if it's some sort of subconscious thing where I perceive everything to be better because I'm playing on a cart, but everything just seems more authentic than on the PSOne games.

I've decided to keep my PS2 and Katamari at home and take my Gamecube with me to the land of the morning calm, just because of the one little add on. Now, anybody got any recommendations for a good GC pinball game?

Pinball of the Dead is a must own. I've also heard good things about Sonic Pinball Party and Mario Pinball Land.

For the Gamecube, you're limited to Pinball Hall of Fame.

For the GBA, I recommend Pinball of the Dead, Sonic Pinball Party, Hardcore Pinball, Pokemon Pinball Ruby & Sapphire, and Muppet Pinball Mayhem. Stay away from Pinball Tycoon.

I remember the original Pokemon Pinball being fun, and I liked a demo of the GBA Mario pinball I played. I don't know about any of the others, though.

Strange, I'd heard Mario Pinball Land was strictly mediocre.

Metroid Prime Pinball has spoiled me.

I knew I forgot something in my first response.

For the original Game Boy, I recommend Revenge Of The Gator and Kirby's Pinball Land. For the GBC, I recommend Pokemon Pinball, 3D Ultra Pinball: Thrillride, and The Little Mermaid II: Pinball Frenzy.

And yeah, Mario Pinball Land was indeed mediocre.

Still the best portable Pinball games imho, if you're into those, you can't afford to miss them.

Pinball Challenge Deluxe is also quite interesting, being a GBA version of Pinball Dreams, the Amiga cult classic, though it could be difficult to find ('02 PAL only release).

The only GBA pinball game I've played was Pinball of the Dead, I bought it because it was cheap but turned out I really enjoy it

So which GB carts work in this?
Just Game Boy or do Game Boy Color or Advance carts work too?

I believe almost all game boy, game boy color and advance carts work on it. The only exceptions I know of are the games that have some kind of tilt/motion control built into them.

    Thanks,
now to hit the local pawn shops/Gamestops to see how cheap I can get one.

I have a 1st run GB I got for X-mas the year they came out and only got 3 games counting the pack in Tetris, Castlevania, and Fist of the North Star.

Any Recomendations on Color or Advance games?

Kirby's Pinball Land is the shit.

I'm not sure if Pokemon Pinball works on the GBP because of the rumble functionality.

Does it really play GB and GBC carts also? I'll have to go try that in mine.

    Alleyway on a 60" DLP Widescreen!!! W00t!!!

Anyway, the GBA version of Dawn of Souls is infinitely better than the PSX Origins, same for many of the others that are available on both.

    I <3 my GB Player.

It's amazing how much better playing classic RPG's on carts is... I think it's that even tho the fights get repetitive, they are over FAST because of the lack of load times and, in general, limited paging through menus constantly. When the fights go by in 20-30 seconds, it feels like you're booking through them

Wangan, aside from the lack of load times, why do you like GBA FF1+2 better than PS1 FF1+2? I thought GBA's 1, especially, was totally messed up (ridiculously easy, especially with MP instead of spell levels) compared to the PS1 version, where at least you could CHOOSE which of those hand-holding devices you wanted to play with.

    YES!!!

Is FF: Dawn of Souls the only FF rerelease they dumbed down for the GBA, or are IV and V like that too?

There's actually a document on GameFAQs that discusses the feasibility of playing through Warioware Twisted with the Game Boy Player. It's not entirely impossible; just really cumbersome.

The only two pinball games for GameCube are Pinball Hall of Fame: The Gottlieb Collection and Odama, both of which received *slightly* above-average reviews. Good Game Boy pinball video games according to www.gamestats.com:

Disney's The Little Mermaid II: Pinball Frenzy (Game Boy Color)

    Hardcore Pinball (Game Boy Advance)

    Kirby's Pinball Land (Game Boy)

Muppet Pinball Mayhem (Game Boy Advance)

The Pinball of the Dead (Game Boy Advance)

    Pokemon Pinball (Game Boy Color)

Pokemon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire (Game Boy Advance)

Sonic Pinball Party (Game Boy Advance)
