I thought it odd that I've yet to see Seiken Densetsu (the japanese release) refered to as a Final Fantasy game until now. Was certain it was only a US thing...
After reading the wiki though it becomes evident why they were intertwined, even if in title only (working title was Gemma Knights, was in developement before Final Fantasy and Seiken Densetsu was registered in 1987... neat!). In short it was squares project before Final Fantasy but, was placed on the back burner (most likely due to the Dragon Quest upheaval at the time) so they could release Final Fantasy first. They were not intended to be intertwined but they were eventually. Name recognition ya know. It's great to learn something new about something you thought you had pinned down. That was fun!
