New TV Inquiry-Problem Solved

[Atari 5200]

I just bought a new 27" Samsung slim fit tv and was wondering if the stretching and widening on the right side of the picture was normal. This is very noticible in 2d games where something starting on the right side of the tv is widened and when it gets closer to the center, it will shrink. WTF? Any suggestions? Thanks!!

I don't know about your specific TV, but some widescreen TVs have a "smart" stretch mode which stretches more on the sides than on the center, rather than stretching the image uniformly. If this is the case with your TV, you might want to see what other viewing modes you have available.

I checked the manual and the menu options and didn't find anything. So, problem not solved, unfortunately...

I just did some looking on the web and found this:

Non-linear stretch - this mode stretches the edges of a 4:3 image more than the centre of the image. It also does a small amount of vertical stretch, but usually not enough to remove "tickers" or tops of heads. This mode is intended to be used on 4:3 images to prevent "burn in" from the "bars" that would normally be left on the sides of the image. This does not make the people look as "fat" as the horizontal stretch, but it can sometimes be a little disconcerting because the edges of the picture may make one side of an person "fatter" than the other side. (There is less "distortion" in the centre of the image, than at the edges) Once you get used to this image for a week or so, you don't even notice and it's not a bad way to watch 4:3 images on a widescreen TV. When I have people over, they often don't even notice the "irregularities" of this image and I've stopped noticing too, until something at the edge of the screen draws my attention to it.

Yes. My 50" Sony has this and is called "Wide Zoom." Most newer widescreen tvs come with this option -- as it is totally done by a smart little processor. My wife and I use that option every day, and love it. If you haven't found it by now, I'm afraid your new set might not support it.

Yes, that's what I was referring to. Hopefully you have a mode that allows you to preserve the original aspect ratio with side bars or do a linear stretch; those are the ones you should try using.

Ok, I checked out the manual for the TV. You should have a button labeled P.SIZE on your remote. Pressing that should toggle through the various viewing modes available. The manual doesn't really give a good description of the different modes, so you'll just have to try them out and see which, if any of them, work.

If adjusting the view modes didn't help, it could be that the set just has poor geometry. If you haven't checked it out already, the AVS Forums are a great resource for this type of thing; you can see if anyone else is having the same issues with this particular TV.
