    Default Space Invaders Double-Shot

As many of you classic gamers know, if you turn off and on your Atari 2600 rapidly, you can get a double-shot in Space Invaders! Questions:

    (1) Do any emulators re-create this effect?
    (2) Why did it happen? Was it a programmed but not used Game Variation? Or just a hardware glitch?
    (3) How was it done? The Atari only had one Ball Sprite, so how did two appear on screen simultaneously?

It's done by holding reset down when you turn on the console.
