Default 7800 version of Burger Time is available again at Atariage Store

There are 15 copies available as I typed this. This is the 3rd batch for the game. I own the game, and I can tell you it is a very good version of burgertime. The 7800 version of Burger time is called "Beef Drop.

Here is the link to the product to purchase it: http://www.atariage.com/store/index....roducts_id=830

The link has pictures to the game also.

Aside from the name change it is Burgertime. Same enemies, patterns, and levels as the original coin op. Even the sounds were replicated pretty damn accurately. Thanks to the use of a built in Pokey on the carts that is...

I just finally placed my order for one after the announcement was made that they were available again. I don't want to miss out on it again...

In addition, the author of this port to the 7800 also added more levels. This game also shows pretty accurately the power of the 7800s graphics in that the colors are not the usual washed out sort most of us saw during the actual 7800's reigning days back in the late '80s.

Much as I hate to say this, but the 7800 never had "reigning days."

Against the NES and even the distant-second SMS, it was like a firecracker next to an atomic bomb.

I only used the term reigning days not in that it was king of all home consoles...hell it never even came close to that! But it was the king of Atari's home consoles for classic and new games at the time. There was the XEGS of course...but it was marketed toward the computer crowd more.

Most everyone I think can agree that until the 16 bit era started with TG-16 and Genesis, the NES was the king of home gaming at the end of the 80s.

Funny part is this: if Beef Drop, the Pac-Man Collection, and some of those other homebrews had existed for it back then, it would have been soooo-ooo-o-o much better.

For not being alive until 1984 I have the right to say:
    Atari 5200 > Atari 7800
    ... Or do I?

Beef Drop has a pokey sound chip inside the cartridge unlike pac-man collection. That sound chip gives 7800 games better sound then the do without the pokey sound chip.

The only 7800 games that used that sound chip were Ballblazer, Commando and now Beef Drop.

The Author of the game had to buy pokey sound chips and had them install in the cartridge or take out the sound chip from ballblazer cartridges.

The pokey sound chip in those 3 7800 games is used for 5200 games and every atari 8 bit computer atari made.

The sound chip makes the 7800 version of Burgertime sound like the arcade version. It is hard to tell a difference in sound between the nes and the 7800 version as a result.

There are hidden modes in the 7800 version of burgertime including one mode having 4 extra levels.

It is like you said. Programmers started to adding sound chips into cartridges when Activision added a sound chip for the 2600 version of Pitfall 2.

Sort of. From what I understand, Atari 7800 games needed the Pokey chip to produce contemporary video game audio. Games that didn't have it, which it turns out is almost all of them, sounded similar to Atari 2600 games. In other words, without the Pokey chip, 7800 games featured horribly outdated audio.

NES games, on the other hand, didn't need an extra chip to produce good audio. The extra chip in the Japanese version of Castlevania 3 just expanded upon an already solid audio foundation.

Why didn't Atari just include Pokey audio chips in the 7800 console itself?

Well..from what I'm given to understand. The 7800 was originally going to contain a built in Pokey. Problem was, Atari wanted to cut costs. In addition it became apparent that the pokey wasn't going to physically be able to "fit" onto the original 7800 motherboard. Therefore, Atari decided that the 7800 could use the standard TIA sound exactly like the 2600 and games could be made to have a pokey included with the games themselves for extra sound when needed.

As a result we got Commando and Ballblazer which each feature build in Pokey chips for their music. The rest of the games sound like 2600 games because they are in fact using the exact same 2600 sound chip to produce their effects. That being the TIA. However, the 7800 having its own graphics chip was able to still do more with the TIA than the 2600 could. So while most games still sound like crap, some of what we heard on the 7800 couldn't be done on the 2600 quite the same way.

Didn't Ikari Warriors also have enhanced sound?

As for 5200>7800...true. Especially with Adventure 2, Super Pac-Man, and Millipede.
