After thinking about getting a Neo Geo soon and read the Neo Geo thread,I am so confused.
I have a NG CD so I know all that,but all this AES and MVS stuff I don't get.Help me! x_x

A home system is AES right?And what is the difference between that and a MVS?And can MVS games be played on a AES(I think Butta said that).Thanks in advance!

AES = homecart system

MVS = arcade. the exact same as the homecarts, but the cart size is a little bigger. you would need a phantom 1 adapter to play these carts on a home system.

Since MVS is the arcade counterpart, it's usually not as collectable, is widely released, and doesn't come in happy flashy packaging. There's a picture of the carts contact to contact somewhere on my site, um under SNK or arcade...not sure which.

And to clarify further both NGH and AES refer to a home cart game. MVS, as said, is arcade.

As far as home carts they can be found in a few different regions, all universaly compatable. US, Euro, Japanese, and Korean.

There are also a ton of converted home carts out there. These are MVS games that were converted (eproms removed and soldered into a sac home cart) to home carts. You can see many Pulstar, Blazing Star, Neo Turf Masters, and Metal Slug carts that hit e-bay like this.

Cheapest method to play Neo Geo games on a home cart system is to either buy a phantom-1 and play MVS games or buy Japanese games. US and Euro games are the most sought after amongst many collectors and thus cost more.

Ok thanks guys.

So if I get a AES and a phantom-1,I'll be able to play AES and MVS games,aka I'll be set.

And can you buy the system with the phantom-1 already in it?

Phantom-1 is an adaptor, and MVS cart plugs into the adaptor and the adaptor plugs into the system (kinda like a famicom adaptor). There are auctions on e-bay that include both. But be prepared to spend around $450+ to get them both together.

anyone know why this is? I would think the Japanese versions would be more sought after because they are uncensored...

It's partially because of the language problem. Without a modded system, many things are still in Japanese (and most US gamers can't read it.)

Also, there are not as many produced for each title in English as there are in Japanese - so they can tend to be a little scarcer (especially for certain titles.)

The language coding is decided by the system you play the games on with the exception of Quiz and Mahjong games.

If you get a bios mod then you can select the language. Otherwise it is usually set to the region of the system.

As far as cart value. Yes, US/Euro is typically smaller production runs, thus.. rarity. Also, instructions are in English. And the games are from the region you live in. =)

If you are going to collect home carts, collect japanese ones. They are cheaper. First thing that Robotron taught me about neo geo collecting. Now if you just want to play games, yes, get the phantom 1. Although arcade carts start out pricier that drops pretty quick, to the point where I've seen samurai shodown 2's on ebay for 15 bucks MVS and 60-70 AES.
My number one game advice: Get League Bowling. Awesome and underrated title.

hmm... I guess I'll have to check. I usually play on my US one but I can check a few other games and see if they have English options on my JP system. I do know that JP systems play uncensored. As in blood and bounce.

Yea, certain games you can select the language even on a JP system. SS2 is one of them.
