Default Can anyone recommend some good Super Sprint clones/ports?

I've recently been playing a lot of Super Sprint and I'm curious to know if their were any good ports / translations to any of the systems? I believe Super Sprint is best on the Atari St. But I'd be interested in C64, Amiga, etc regardless of console.

Basically, a top down racing game where the whole track is fit on a single - non scrolling screen..

    Thanks!

On Track Racing for the C64. I played that long before I played Super Sprint and I still prefer it.

    Super Off-Road comes to mind.

You can't forget about the Super Off Road series... a little bit newer, but great games.

Super Off Road is a decent top-down racing game and that came out for a bunch of systems, mostly 8-bit and 16-bit (i.e. Super NES/Genesis). Just make sure you don't get the Baja version, which is not a top-down racer.

So I assume you have played Super Sprint on the NES? That was a fun version, for the most part.

RC Pro AM, Micro Machines both on NES. I like a good racing game, RC Pro AM is worth it. It plays kinda like Super Sprint but you can't see the entire track, but there is power ups and missiles and stuff
I know, I know, the whole track needs to be seen. But it's a great game to check out.

The Sprint series also included Championship Sprint and Badlands.
Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat, like Super Off-Road, from Tradewest, is very similar to Super Sprint, only better. I have the NES version of both, although the Arcade versions are superior. You can probably find a ROM download of both, and I'm fairly certain they will work with MAME.

I'll save you some time. This link should give you a decent idea of Super Off Road. You'll find it pretty cheap on Super NES, Genesis or NES.

Don't laugh - but I used to have a blast playing Spin-out, on my Odyssey 2.

It's similar to Sprint, but the pink background may get a little annoying after a while

EDIT - But Spin-out is really only fun with 2 players.

If you can stand scrolling, the Skidmarks series on Amiga is one of the finest examples.

How bout Rally X? I'm also a big fan of Rock N Roll Racing.

I've heard a lot of criticism with steering on the Sprint series. Is it possible to use a steering wheel with the Arcade Party Pack (PS1) that emulates Sprint?

Rally X is nothing like Super Sprint.

Super Sprint uses a free spinning 360 degree wheel, unlike any console controllers I'm aware of besides the 2600's Indy 500 controller, so the likely answer to that is no.

Indy 500 is similar to Super Sprint on the 2600, as is Sprintmaster. And there's Super Sprint's Atari arcade predacessors as well (I think Sprint 8 is on the Retro Atari DS game).

Kirby Air Ride has a gameplay mode that's basically Super Sprint (in addition to the standard modes that play a little more like F-Zero). I highly recommend it if you've got a Gamecube and/or Wii.

As was said, the NES ports of Super Sprint and Danny Sullivan's Indy heat are top-notch. I've reviewed both for Retrogaming Times Monthly, issue 7 and issue 32 respectively. My writing style (and the over all grade of content of the newsletter) changed drastically between the two articles there but my thoughts about the games haven't changed one bit. In fact that Super Sprint article was my first RTM contribution and it took me a few before I got a feel how to provide content for it - the latter being fairly recent and the setup I use now.

Championship Sprint is my favorite of the series simply because I like the tracks it contains better than any other. Super Sprint was great in the arcade but a couple of those tracks were just way too technical to be fun for casual players. Alas the only way to really play these games is with a 360 degree wheel as mentioned. Championship Sprint gets almost as much play as Pole Position in my Pole Position arcade upright MAME conversion.

Can you guys recommend a 360 spinning wheel to use with Mame? I personally hate emulation but it seems to be the only way. I also have no room for a big honking 3 player Sprint set up (unfortunately )

Could always buy the control panel off a Pole Position and do a mouse hack, then make it into a desktop or laptop controller.
