Default Xbox 360 with internal HD-DVD is coming (rumor)...

How many people saw this coming? Check out pg. 3 of the article.

Can you imagine having a choice between 2 versions of a new game: a 1-disc HD-DVD version and multiple disc DVD verison? Nothing official yet, but just the thought pisses me off. Let's hope this is for HD-DVD movies only or that this guy is full of shit.

Coming from an Aussie website, I'd definitely take that with a grain of salt.

And it's really nothing new - everytime a rumor gets started about the 360, they always end up being about the 360's choice of drives.

And if they do actually do it - you wanna talk about pissed???

And i still say they're gonna start putting games on HD-DVD. Alot of developers are getting annoyed with the storage space issues.

What would be the point of having 1 HD DVD disc if you have to design it as a multi-disc game anyway? It's seems like an awful lot to go through just so users don't have to change a disc.

I was going to say that retailers would be pissed of if MS released 2 SKU's for the same game, but then again there were multiple versions of Halo 3.

well the guy technically didn't say Microsoft is going to come out with an HD DVD player. It sounds like he is saying it's almost a given that they will meaning he believes they will. With the recent announcement that Ubisoft is having issues fitting Assasins Creed on a standard DVD, Microsoft may be forced to have a new medium for their games in order to have them fit on 1 disc, which would most likely be HD DVD. Even if a game was on multiple discs you still wouldn't be able to have higher resolution textures stored on them. If you did the amount of data that would have to be used on a disc to store the higher textures would be so much you would be swapping discs a lot.

I don't question the integrity of Australian news, I just find it a bit odd that the Aussies would get this news before the US - the 360's home country.

Actually, I'm hoping for an HD-DVD version of the unit. Discs are cheap, they could easily include both in a package, and so what if some of us get to play GTA IV without swapping discs. Having that accessory drive just isn't a very elegant solution to the problem (which I don't have) of watching HD content.

At this point, it wouldn't matter so much to me. Our company store was selling the HD-DVD hookup for $98 (!) with the wonderful (emrm) King Kong movie. Grabbed one of the last ones - w00!

Post Microsoft Considering New Xbox Sku, Cuts Japanese Prices [Slashdot]

Continuing the ongoing (and sometimes confusing) shuffle of Xbox 360 skus, the site Smarthouse (via The Escapist) is reporting that a Toshiba insider sees Microsoft releasing a new 'media center' version of the 360. The new device would have built-in HD-DVD capability, and could include features like an MP3 dock and dual HDTV tuners. "Both Toshiba and Microsoft have also explored the possibility of a new open standard chassis system that allows an Xbox to be slotted into a HD TV screen over 40-inch. The open standard bays will allow hard drives to be upgraded and expanded similar to the way that users can upgrade the hard drive on a PC." Relatedly, the company continues to fight the good fight in Japan, having cut prices on the Core and Premium packs.Read more of this story at Slashdot.

It stands for Stock Keeping Unit.

It's the set of lines the cashier scans with their fancy laser (which itself is an acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation) technology to know how much money to take from you.

So again, why does everyone keep announcing when a "new SKU" is released. I'm sure the cans of Chunky brand soup get different sku #'s every now and then.. is this newsworthy?

Whoa--Chunky brand soup got a new sku? I best get myself to a Safeway.

No reason in particular for you to care, although it means there's most likely a new price for something that you can already buy and it will come with new stuff added or old stuff taken out. Or if you really get turned on by merchants being able to track their inventory, then it's pretty exciting too.

I thought those barcodes were called UPCs (which is an acronym for Universal Product Code)?

It's a fancy way of saying "Microsoft is releasing a new Xbox 360 package." In addition to the basic package, the elite package, the pro package, etc., now there will be yet another package/SKU.

Yeah, it really annoys me when people refer to system bundles now as "SKU's" because it's such a generic term. Just call it a bundle for crying out loud. "SKU" has gotta be the most overused buzz word in the gaming press right now.

The barcode is actually a UPC. Sku, in most companies, is interchangable with it. All a sku is is a specific way for a company to look up a specific product.

Servbot posts only show when a Mod lets them (we get some less than stellar ones, or ones that are obvious duplicates, so approval helps out), That was my bad on this one. However by the powers of Greyskull I Mighty Morphed them into one cohesive thread. Thanks for the heads up and carry on.

I don't think they'll make a 360 with HD DVD built in. They might do it with the next xbox, though.
