Achievement Points: The Good, The Bad, and the Silly

As per request by Mr. DP himself, and a follow-up to my old post, what games have the most impossible achievements ever? The easiest? Which are you the most proud to have unlocked? Here we will explore any and all possibilities to this riddle. Love them or hate them, achievements are here to stay.

I'd like to start off with the easiest retail games first, so here are a few of my choices.

Easiest Retail Games

Avatar TLA:TBE - This tops the list of currently easiest achievements to get in a game. 5 achievements that will net you 1000 gamerscore in roughly two minutes. Don't believe me? Believe it.

NBA 2K6, College Hoops 2K6 - Both of these can be fully 1000'd in a single game. As far as I know NBA Live 06 cannot be completed anymore as there's an online achievement, and with the servers down for good that's 40 points you won't be getting. Virtually every other 06 game is quite easy as well, with the exception of Tiger Woods 2006, but those first two take the cake.

King Kong - The very first of the non-sports games to have easy achievements. Just beat the game and you'll be rewarded with 1000 points. 6-8 hours.

TMNT - I never thought Kong would be topped for easy achievements, but this one can be 1000'd in 4-6 hours.

Eragon - So easy, yet so bad. Beating this game twice and finding one hidden blue egg in each level will net you 1000 points.

Easiest Arcade Titles

My experience is limited for Arcade titles, so I'll only list a couple.

Dig Dug - With the exception of the Dig achievement, you can have most of the achievements done in around half an hour. Add maybe another hour tops for Dig.

UNO - couple hours with some friends and you should have this one done.

Pac-man/Ms. Pac-man - With the exception of the Perfect achievements, you can have most of the achievements done in under an hour.

The easiest achievement in any game so far:

I gotta give this to The Simpsons Game. Simply pressing start at the beginning of the game will net you with a cool 5 points. How awesome is that!

So, the most impossible games to fully 1000. What are they? I'll tell you what I think. Keep in mind I'm not only going by difficulty of the achievements themselves, but the amount of time the game would take to achieve 1000. I'm leaving out games with unattainable achievements for obvious reasons. That means you Quake 4 and Tiger Woods 2006.

Hardest Retail Games

Final Fantasy XI - I've not played this myself, but looking at the Mygamercard.net leaderboards, there's only three people IN THE WORLD who have 1000 in the game, and at least one of those people is a known cheater. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that they're not that hard to unlock, but the time spent doing so would be rediculous.

Rumble Roses XX - You know, I'd have enjoyed this one a lot more if the achievements didn't take so bloody long to unlock. 2-3 hours of play will net you TEN POINTS. I've read it takes a good 300 hours/6000 matches for you fully complete this one. Too long for my tastes!

Chromehounds - I haven't played this either, but I hear horror stories about this one all the time. Mygamercard.net's leaderboard for this game shows only a handful of people with 1000.

Bomberman Act: Zero - Haven't played myself, but again, the leaderboards show only 5 people with 1000 in this one and two of those people are known cheaters. Besides, Detonating 1 million bombs and destroying 1 million blocks can not come fast, rest assured.

Ridge Racer 6 - Finish every race without so much getting a feather scratch on your car? Sounds tough.

Gears of War - 10 000 kills in ranked matches. Not hard at all, but will take months of dedicated play.

Call of Duty 3 - 40 000 points online. Yikes!

How about pesky achievements in Arcade titles?

Hardest Arcade Titles

Robotron 2084 - This game is the definition of hard. I can survive 1 million points in Geometry Wars, but I cannot pass Wave 10 in this game. If you see anyone with 200 in this game (meaning they finished Wave 100), kiss their feet. NOW.

Smash TV - Finish the entire game without continuing. Enough said.

Street Fighter II - You've gotta be really good at this game to finish it without losing a round, even on 0* difficulty. Took myself several weeks of on and off playing to finally do this.

Geometry Wars - Anyone who has played this game knows it doesn't **** around after you pass 100 000 points. Good, now try surviving another 900 000. Doable, but takes lots of practice.

Battlestar Galactica - 5000 kills in online ranked. Yawn...

The hardest achievement ever:

I've got to give this one to Robotron. Survive Wave 100. THIS GAME DOES NOT **** AROUND AT ALL. Makes Geometry Wars look like a cakewalk.

So, that takes care of the easiest and hardest games to fully complete, as well as the easiest and hardest achievement to date. How about a few single achievements on both sides of the scale?

Achievements that are near-effortless:

The Orange Box - Submissive/Defiant

Quick 10 points. Near the beginning of Half Life 2, a guard asks you you pick up a can and put it in the trash. You have two choices. A) Put the can in the trash, or B) Throw the can at his face. Either one will net you with 5 points, while the latter will probably also put a smile on your face. Reload and pick the opposite of what you chose before.

Halo 3 - Fear the Pink Mist

Find a needler, kill 5 enemies. 5 points.

Crackdown - Take Me To Your Supply point

The orange marker on your radar when you first start the game, go there and press Y. 10 points.

Civil War - Private

Kill 20 enemies. You'll likely have it before the end of level 1

Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy - Secret Plans level complete

Complete the first level for 20 points. Do it without dying and you'll earn another 20.

Achievements that will make you pull hair out or break a controller:

Geometry Wars - Quartermaster

Requires you to collect 9 bombs. you start with three and are rewarded one at every 100 000, so basically score 600 000 without using a bomb. Very tough, not recommended to attempt surviving 1 000 000 at the same time.

Street Fighter II - 7 Stars

Beat the game on the hardest difficulty. Take as many continues as you want, nothing will save you from the cheap AI.

Call of Duty 4 - Mile High Club

Beat the last level on Veteran. It would be no problem, except you have to do it in a minute.

Guitar Hero 2 - Kick the Bucket Award

Complete Jordan on Expert, one of the two hardest songs in the game.

Call of Duty 2 - Veteran Achievements

MUCH harder game than COD4 in my opinion. YOU WILL DIE A LOT. You have my word.

These are just a few examples. Nearly every game has a handful of easy and hard achievements, so share some!

- Surviving 1 million points in Geometry Wars.
- Beating SFII without losing a round
- Beating Earth Defense Force 2017 on Inferno

The game with the best, most creative achievements: The Orange Box (clicky)

The first game with 99 achievements, and the most creative list to date. Valve put in some hard work thinking some of these up, and the end result adds a lot to the overall experience. If every game did achievements like TOB, would anyone TRULY hate achievements?

The game with the most pathetic, uninspired list of achievements: Avatar TLA:TBE (clicky)

Sure, everyone loves an easy 1000, but WTF were they thinking? to be this uncreative at this point in the 360's life with achievements is a major kick in the privates. 5 achievements, 1000 points, and you don't even have to play the game to get them! BOO!

Just Plain Silly achievements:

There's two types of achievements I'd like to cover in this section: Ones that may give you a chuckle or ask you to do something you wouldn't normally do or outrageous, and ones that aren't original at all/Take WAY too long to do for a single achievement. There may be spoilers ahead, so just a heads up.

BioShock - Irony
The player has taken a picture of Sander Cohen's corpse.

When I unlocked this achievement, I literally laughed out loud. I'll spare the details for anyone who hasn't played the game, but for the rest of you... did you laugh upon unlocking this achievement?

Blitz: The League

When a game has achievements titled "O RLY?" and "Rofl Waffle", do you laugh or think "Geez, real original". Either way, a handful of this game's achievements belong in this section. Check them out.

Gears of War - Seriously...

10 000 kills ranked online. Really silly because of how long this takes for 50 points and a gamer picture. At least the game is popular enough so there's always time to get it if you so please. This next achievement however...

The Club - No, Seriously
Kill 10 001 people in ranked matches.

I both laughed and groaned at this one, as it's obviously mocking Gears of War's "Seriously..." achievement. Plus you have to wonder, is the game going to be popular and active long enough to even get that many kills? Only time will tell as this game isn't out yet.

The Orange Box

This game is full of silly achievements, but my two favorites are for killing an enemy with a toilet, and one called "OSHA Violation" which has you kill 3 enemies while operating a crane. Funny stuff!

I've found the achievements that are the most fun to attain are from the open world, "sandbox" games. Especially the fetch quests. They're the ultimate video game scavenger hunt.

Crackdown (orb hunting...probably the most achievement-related fun I've had just trying to get those two)
Just Cause (anyone can get 1000 points with a little dedication)
Godfather (very underrated game)
Assassin's Creed (flags and Templars...yes, I found them all)

The most rewarding achievements are from Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. I've put over 400 hours into the multiplayer, and still only have half the multiplayer achievements. Whenever I unlocked one, it was a big deal.

As far as my video game skills go, the game with the hardest achievements (as of January 2008) is Guitar Hero 3. Hands down. I'll be happy if I get past 100 achievement points.
